Neither Seagate nor Western Digital (WD) is a reliable winner across every hard drive. Reliability varies by model and operating conditions; warranty depends on the exact product and market; and cost needs a current, like-for-like price comparison. Choose between specific drives for the same capacity and workload, rather than choosing by brand name alone.
Which brand is more reliable?
There is no sound basis for declaring either Seagate or WD universally more reliable. A brand-wide average can conceal differences in model, age, capacity, and deployment. Backblaze publishes model-level failure statistics from drives used in its operating fleet, including quarterly reports and a reliability resource: Backblaze hard drive test data and its Q1 2026 and Q2 2026 reports.
These reports use annualized failure rate (AFR), a statistical summary of failures in the observed drive population over a period. AFR is not a prediction that a particular drive in your computer will fail—or survive—during the coming year. Backblaze’s fleet, workloads, and drive selection differ from those of a home PC, USB enclosure, or typical NAS, so use its figures as model-level evidence, not a personal reliability guarantee.
Backblaze reported an overall fleet AFR of 1.36% for 2025. That is an aggregate across the drives included in its annual report, not a direct comparison between Seagate and WD: Backblaze’s 2025 drive statistics.

What broader research can—and cannot—show
A 2026 peer-reviewed analysis by Christoph Siemroth and Yeomyung Park examined more than 440,000 hard drives using historical Backblaze data. It adjusted comparisons for drive age, capacity, form factor, and temperature. This provides context for manufacturer-level patterns within that dataset, but it remains observational evidence from Backblaze’s operating environment, not a universal consumer test or proof that one brand always lasts longer. See the study paper and its parallel arXiv record.
How to use failure-rate figures
When comparing reported reliability, match the exact model numbers and check the period, drive count or exposure, and age distribution behind each figure. A model with a low reported AFR in a particular fleet and period is useful evidence, but a small sample or different deployment can make a direct comparison less meaningful. Do not mix desktop, NAS, and enterprise drives as though they serve identical workloads.
How do Seagate and WD warranties compare?
Warranty length is a product- and market-specific term, not a brand-wide promise. For example, Seagate’s support listing identifies the 16TB IronWolf Pro model ST16000NT001 and specifies a “5-year limited warranty.” It also lists SATA 6 Gb/s, 7200 RPM, and rotational-vibration sensors: Seagate IronWolf Pro product support.

WD’s official warranty-period policy lists a five-year period for WD Red Pro designations: WD warranty periods by product. Check the exact SKU, country or region, and eligibility terms before buying; the policy does not mean every WD drive carries five years of coverage.

Which brand costs less per terabyte?
No current, matched Seagate-versus-WD retail price comparison is established here, so there is no supported cost winner. Prices change with capacity, product family, retailer, and geography. For a useful comparison, check same-day prices for drives of the same capacity and class—such as NAS-class against NAS-class—and divide each purchase price by its advertised terabytes.

- Easy-to-use desktop hard drive—simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable
- Fast file transfers with USB 3.3
- Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
- Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (Reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
- Enjoy peace of mind with the included limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services
Record the seller, region, and date alongside the calculation. A lower price per terabyte may not be a fair substitute if one drive is designed for desktop use and the other for a multi-bay NAS or continuous operation. Compare workload fit and warranty alongside the price, not after the fact.

- Match the workload. Decide whether the drive is for a desktop PC, external enclosure, multi-bay NAS, or continuous enterprise operation. Compare models designed for the same setting.
- Match capacity and form. Compare the same advertised capacity and compatible drive type where possible; otherwise, make the difference explicit.
- Check model-level evidence. Look up exact model numbers in reliability reports and read the observation period, fleet context, sample or exposure, and drive age information.
- Verify warranty terms. Confirm the exact SKU’s coverage period and conditions for your region using the manufacturer’s policy or product page.
- Compare current price per TB. Use prices checked at the same time from the same market, and include the model class in the comparison.
- Maintain backups. A warranty may provide a replacement drive under its terms, but it is not a data-recovery plan.
Verdict: compare models, not logos
Seagate and WD both offer drives with different capacities, intended workloads, and warranty terms. Fleet data can inform a model-level reliability comparison, but it cannot guarantee an individual drive’s lifespan. The strongest choice is the exact model that fits your workload, has supportable reliability evidence, offers acceptable warranty terms in your region, and is competitively priced per terabyte against a genuinely comparable alternative.
