Before installing a game mod, verify that it came from the mod’s official page or a trusted host, check the status of the exact file you downloaded, and scan that file with updated security software. Treat unexpected programs and unexplained antivirus warnings as reasons to pause. No platform badge or clean scan can guarantee a mod is safe.
Start with the source and the exact mod file
Open the mod through the game’s official mod channel or an established host, then confirm that the page, author, game version, and download match what you intended. Avoid reposts and unsolicited links to supposed “required tools.” Steam advises users to download custom content only from trusted sources and warns that malware can be disguised as gaming-related utilities. See Steam’s account security recommendations and Steam’s guidance on VAC bans.
Read the mod’s installation instructions, recent announcements, and comments. Compare the listed files with the archive you downloaded. An established creator and a history of community use can add context, but popularity is not proof of safety.
Check file-level scan status on Nexus Mods
Nexus Mods shows scan indicators beside individual files in a mod’s Files tab. These labels describe Nexus’s checks; they are not a universal standard used by other hosts.

| Badge | What Nexus says it means | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Internal checks and a VirusTotal scan passed. | Useful reassurance, not a guarantee that the file is safe. |
| Blue | Internal checks passed, but VirusTotal could not scan the file. | Do not interpret this as a clean VirusTotal result. |
| White | The file has not been scanned. | Do not treat it as cleared; wait or assess it cautiously. |
| Yellow | Scans are pending and the file is unavailable. | Wait for the scans to finish rather than seeking a workaround. |
| Red | A check failed or VirusTotal reported a significant number of detections. | Review the report and avoid installing unless the concern is resolved. |
Open the VirusTotal report where one is available and look at the result for the exact file—not just the mod page or another version. Nexus explains its scan indicators and notes that false positives can occur in its VirusTotal FAQ.
Inspect what the archive contains and what it asks you to run
Check the file list and instructions before opening an installer or copying files into the game. An executable is not automatically malicious: some mods and tools legitimately need one. But investigate if the download includes an unexpected self-extracting installer, a nested archive, an unrelated program, or software that connects to the internet without a clear reason tied to the mod.

Nexus says potentially harmful file types may be blocked or reviewed, rejects nested archives so files can be scanned, and generally prohibits executables that connect to the internet unless that behavior is crucial to the mod or utility. Its policies provide context for these checks: file submission guidelines and VirusTotal FAQ.
- Pause if the author asks you to disable antivirus protection, run an unrelated utility, or grant broad privileges without a convincing explanation.
- Do not assume every DLL or executable is malware; judge it against the mod’s documented purpose and the source’s reputation.
- If the contents do not match the description or the requested action is unexplained, skip the download and ask the host or security vendor.
Scan the downloaded file before installing it
- Save the download without running it or moving its contents into the game.
- Update your antivirus definitions, then scan the downloaded archive or installer using your security software.
- If the scan flags the file, leave it quarantined or remove it while you investigate. Report the file to the host and consult your security vendor’s guidance.
- Do not create an antivirus exception just to make the mod work. Steam says to make an exception only if you are confident the file is not malware; if you are unsure about a detection, report it and contact the security vendor. See Steam’s antivirus guidance.
Antivirus detections can be false positives, but there is no universal detection-count cutoff that proves a file harmless or malicious. Assess the vendor’s result alongside the file’s source, contents, scan report, and stated purpose rather than dismissing a warning automatically.

Combine signals; no clean result proves safety
A trusted source, a favorable platform badge, a clean antivirus scan, and positive community history each reduce uncertainty, but none settles the question alone. Steam warns that targeted malware may be customized to evade common antivirus tools, while Nexus notes that mod files can trigger false positives. If these signals conflict or the file’s behavior is unexplained, do not install it.
For a Nexus file, distinguish a green badge from a blue one: blue means VirusTotal could not scan the file, not that it reported a clean result. For other hosts, do not assume their badges or screening processes mean the same thing; the cited guidance does not establish a cross-platform standard.

Steam’s integrity check is for game files, not mod safety
Steam’s “Verify integrity of game files” feature checks whether the game’s installed files are correct. Steam does not describe it as a scan or safety certification for third-party mods. Use it to repair game files if needed, not to establish that a mod is clean. The steps are on Steam’s game-file verification support page.
