No—not for Google Search. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on the same core Search ranking and quality systems as regular results, so sound SEO remains the foundation. You may need to account for how AI features affect discovery and clicks, but Google does not require a separate set of AI-only tricks. That conclusion applies to Google’s features; it does not establish how every independent AI answer engine ranks or selects sources.

Why traditional SEO still matters in Google’s AI Search

Google says its generative Search features retrieve relevant pages from the Search index and use its core ranking and quality systems. The process can include retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out, in which a search is explored through related queries. In practice, pages still need to be discoverable and useful enough to qualify under Google’s established Search systems. Google’s own guidance puts it plainly: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Google’s guide to generative AI features was last updated July 10, 2026.

What to do: strengthen the SEO fundamentals

Publish material that adds value

Create helpful, reliable, people-first pages that answer the reader’s question and offer something beyond a generic restatement. Distinctive experience, a useful point of view, and original detail give a page more reason to be useful to readers. Organize information clearly, and use high-quality images or video when they genuinely help explain the subject.

Make the page accessible to Search

Google’s baseline guidance remains to make pages crawlable, use the words readers use in prominent places, and ensure links can be crawled. Follow relevant best practices for images, video, structured data, and JavaScript. The Google Search Essentials page describes these durable requirements.

Technical eligibility is necessary, not a guarantee of exposure. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be considered for generative features. Even when a site meets the requirements and policies, Google does not promise to crawl, index, or serve a page.

Do you need special AEO or GEO tactics?

For Google’s generative Search features, Google says no special AI optimization layer is required. Its guide says:

  • llms.txt: Google Search does not use it as a special signal.
  • Tiny content chunks: There is no ideal page length or requirement to split content into artificially small pieces.
  • AI-only rewrites: Google does not require rewriting pages specifically for AI.
  • Special AI structured data: Google does not require special structured data for generative Search. Structured data can still be useful for an overall SEO strategy, including eligibility for rich results.

Judge a proposed tactic by whether it improves reader value or technical accessibility, and whether the platform itself documents a need for it. Google’s advice is specific to Google Search; check the documentation for an independent answer engine before assuming the same rules apply.

AI visibility and website traffic are different measures

A page may be surfaced in an AI feature without producing a visit to its site. Google’s guidance points site owners to its Search Console generative AI performance report to measure discovery through Google’s AI Search and Discover features. That is a Google-specific reporting path, not a universal measure of visibility across answer engines.

The available evidence on referral effects is not uniform, and the measures are not directly interchangeable:

  • Google’s account: On August 6, 2025, Google VP and Head of Search Liz Reid said Google’s year-over-year data showed relatively stable total organic click volume to websites and higher average click quality. She also acknowledged that traffic shifts among sites and that some quick-answer searches end without a click. The post does not give a numeric estimate of click changes. Reid wrote, “We continue to send billions of clicks to the web every day and are committed to prioritizing the web in our AI experiences in Search.” These are Google’s claims about its aggregate data. Read Google’s August 6, 2025 post.
  • One field experiment: A preregistered experiment involving 1,100 participants, reported on arXiv on August 18, 2026, found that hiding AI Overviews and AI Mode increased click-through to publishers. An AI Mode-only experience reduced click-through and eroded measured user experience and trust. This is one experiment on Google Search, not a universal estimate across queries, sites, or platforms. Its findings use different methods and measures from Google’s year-over-year report. Read the experiment.

For site owners, the practical implication is to monitor both Search visibility and referral traffic rather than treating one as a proxy for the other.

What this means if you are building an AI-search strategy

Do not abandon established SEO for a separate Google-focused AEO or GEO checklist. Keep investing in crawlability, useful content, clear organization, and relevant media; then measure how Google’s generative features affect your own discovery and visits. For other AI answer engines, treat Google’s recommendations as useful context, not proof of their ranking rules, and look for each service’s own current documentation.
