What wanted levels mean—and why star counts are not a direct comparison
A wanted level is a shorthand for police attention and response. Across the series, the star meter is familiar, but the systems behind it change: how police learn about a crime, how they pursue the player, and what the player must do to escape. A higher cap does not by itself mean a game is harder, and stars are not equivalent units across titles.

GTA III and the classic 3D-era baseline
The GTA III-era reference describes a six-level scale, with police response growing as the wanted level climbs. It is a useful baseline for the familiar star-meter concept, but it does not support treating every later classic 3D-era game as having identical arrest, evasion, or escalation rules. GTA IV: six stars, redesigned pursuit
The GTA IV community reference also describes a six-star system, while characterizing the wanted system as revamped. One concrete change it identifies is the removal of police-bribe pickups available in earlier games. The point of comparison is not simply that GTA IV keeps six stars: the pursuit and escape mechanics change even though the meter’s maximum matches the GTA III-era reference. These details are reported by a community game reference, not presented as Rockstar developer documentation.

GTA V: five stars and a search phase
The GTA V reference describes a five-star maximum. It also notes two ways its pursuit can extend beyond a direct police sighting: civilians may report crimes, and officers search for the player after the player leaves the wanted vicinity. The reference establishes the presence of this search behavior, but not a universal radius or timing that applies to every situation.
GTA VI: what has been reported
GTA VI is upcoming, so its wanted system should be understood as reported information rather than a complete released-game specification. GamesRadar reported a six-star display and quoted Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson saying that a crime must be witnessed or trigger an alarm to be reported to law enforcement. The report also describes police tracking identifying information such as clothing, face, vehicle, or whether characters are together.

In a separate GamesRadar report, Nelson described the goal of making police retain more memory after an escape rather than forgetting the player as soon as immediate pursuit ends. Together, the reports point toward a system in which avoiding detection and shedding police recognition matter alongside getting away from pursuing officers. The precise behavior may differ in the released game.

What matters most when comparing the systems
- How suspicion begins: GTA V’s reference includes civilian reports; GTA VI reporting describes witness or alarm-triggered reports and recognition of identifying details.
- What happens after pursuit: GTA V includes searching around the wanted vicinity; GTA VI reporting describes more persistent police memory after the player escapes immediate pursuit.
- How the scale compares: GTA III-era and GTA IV references describe six stars, GTA V describes five, and GamesRadar reports six for GTA VI. Those caps describe each game’s meter, not directly comparable danger levels.
