The rings are powerful but not limitless. Their charge runs down, and Lanterns replenish it from personal batteries connected to the Central Power Battery on Oa.
Who are the Green Lantern Corps?
DC describes the Green Lantern Corps as an intergalactic police force whose members come from sentient species across the cosmos. Its base of operations is Oa, where the Central Power Battery serves as the Corps’ energy source. DC’s character page names human members including Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz.
That page gives the Corps a fictional history of more than three billion years, with 7,200 members assigned across 3,600 sectors. These are figures from DC’s in-universe character description, not real-world measurements or guaranteed constants across every version of the comics.
How Hal Jordan became a Lantern
Hal Jordan’s origin is one example of how a ring can pass to a new bearer. In DC’s biography of Hal, alien Green Lantern Abin Sur crashes on Earth and entrusts Hal with his ring and responsibility for Earth’s sector. That succession story illustrates Hal’s path; it is not a rule that every Lantern follows.

How does a Green Lantern ring choose its wearer?
DC’s explanation says rings select people for strength of will, and that a stronger will makes a ring more effective. A DC editors’ interview adds that a ring’s choice may also reflect a personality profile resembling its previous wearer. Treat that as editorial nuance, not a universal selection formula stated for every story.
What can a Green Lantern power ring do?
A ring can project hard energy into shapes its wearer imagines, from a simple trap to a more complex vehicle. The construct is not just a visual effect: it can be used to restrain, shield, move or otherwise interact with things in the Lantern’s surroundings.

How do the rings get their power, and why do they need recharging?
The energy chain has two batteries. The Central Power Battery on Oa is the Corps’ reservoir; each Lantern’s personal power battery draws on it and acts as a remote charging station for the ring. A ring’s charge is finite and drains through use.

DC’s 2011 explainer describes a charge as lasting approximately 24 Earth hours. That is a lore detail from that article, not an invariant countdown across every comic or adaptation. The same explainer says Lanterns recharge by reciting the oath while charging their rings.
The Green Lantern oath
DC’s Corps page says members speak the ancient oath before charging their rings. One formulation quoted in DC’s ring explainer is: “In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, No Evil Shall Escape My Sight– Let Those Who Worship Evil’s Might, Beware My Power– Green Lantern’s Light!” Punctuation and wording may differ among official pages or editions.

What happens when a ring runs out of power?
A depleted ring becomes inactive until it is charged again, so a Lantern may lose access to its abilities at a critical moment. DC editor Matt Idelson captured the limitation in an interview: “The Green Lantern power ring may be the most powerful weapon in the universe, but if it runs out of juice, all it is a pretty piece of jewelry.” The practical point is that imagination and willpower do not remove the ring’s energy constraint; recharging is part of using it effectively.

DC editors associate green with willpower. In the same interview, they describe yellow as fear, blue as hope, red as rage, violet as love, orange as greed and indigo as compassion. These color associations give the wider Lantern spectrum distinct emotional themes; they do not make other colors interchangeable with green or establish that every color’s ring works identically.
