Neither is a universal winner. Android 16 desktop windowing has the clearer option for turning a supported phone or tablet and an external monitor into a desktop-like workspace. Stage Manager is a built-in way to organize overlapping, resizable windows on a supported iPad, but only a narrower set of iPads can move those windows to an external display. Choose according to your device and whether you want to work on the tablet itself or use a separate monitor.

At a glance: what each mode does

Multiple tasks on one screen On supported devices, apps can open in separate movable, resizable windows. A taskbar and window controls support desktop-style use. Which one works better for your workflow?

Choose Android for a supported phone-to-monitor desktop

Android is the stronger documented fit if you want to connect a supported phone to a monitor and use that display as a separate workspace with several freeform app windows. Google says connected-display support reached general availability with Android 16 QPR3 on supported Pixel and Samsung devices on March 3, 2026. The announcement describes a taskbar and multiple resizable windows on the external display, with desktop extension across both screens available on certain supported tablet setups. Google’s announcement

Choose Stage Manager to organize windows on an iPad

If your main goal is arranging several overlapping windows on the iPad itself and switching among recent apps, Stage Manager provides that layout on compatible models. It is not necessary to connect an external monitor to use Stage Manager; the monitor workflow is a separate compatibility question.

Let your input style decide

Android documents two different interaction patterns. In touch-first mode, apps default to opening full-screen; in desktop-first mode, freeform app launches are favored and the desktop taskbar stays visible. That distinction matters if the device is usually used as a tablet but sometimes connected to a monitor. Stage Manager is an iPad multitasking feature, so consider whether you prefer managing windows with touch, a pointer, or both. Neither platform’s documentation establishes a general productivity advantage for one input style.

Android: verify the exact device

Google’s Android Help says desktop windowing is not available on every device and that the experience varies. Its March 3, 2026 announcement named Pixel 8, 9, and 10 series and a range of Samsung devices, including the S26, Fold7, Flip7, and Tab S11, as supported at publication time. That announcement is not a guarantee for every Android 16 device or every model in those families; confirm current support for your exact model and the connection you intend to use. Plan the display and accessories around the device

A compatible display connection may require a USB-C cable or hub, depending on the device and monitor. Apple documents USB-C DisplayPort connections and model-dependent supported resolutions for iPad; check your iPad’s specifications and the display’s input requirements before choosing an adapter or hub. A keyboard, mouse, or trackpad may also suit a desktop-style setup, but the cited platform guidance does not require a particular brand or accessory. What the official feature descriptions do—and do not—establish

Google and Apple document feature behavior and supported-device lists.
