Sometimes—but only if both the mattress maker and the exact cleaner model permit it. A portable cleaner’s upholstery attachment does not make it safe for every mattress: Rowenta lists mattresses as a supported surface for its Clean It IN5020F0, while Rug Doctor’s July 2024 manual excludes mattresses and toppers made with memory foam, foam, or goose down.
Check both the mattress and cleaner instructions
Start with the mattress care tag or the manufacturer’s care page, then check the manual for your specific portable cleaner. You need permission from both. If either source prohibits wet cleaning or use on that mattress material, do not use the machine.
Do not infer mattress compatibility from a general statement that a cleaner handles upholstery. The directions can differ by model: Rowenta’s official Clean It IN5020F0 support page names mattresses among the surfaces it is designed to clean, but that approval does not extend to other machines or every mattress. Use upholstery fabric codes only as a screening step
If your mattress has an upholstery fabric-care tag, Rug Doctor’s portable spot-cleaner guidance says water cleaning is suitable for fabrics marked W or W/S; it prohibits use on S, X, or Dry Clean Only fabrics. How to proceed if both manufacturers allow it
- Use only the approved tool and solution. Follow the cleaner’s model-specific directions rather than substituting a detergent or attachment. Rowenta says to use the amount of solution indicated on the clean-water tank and warns against exceeding it to avoid residue. Rowenta Clean It IN5020F0 support
- Test a hidden area. Rug Doctor instructs users to test the tool and solution on an inconspicuous spot, let it dry, and stop if the color is affected. Rug Doctor portable spot-cleaner support
- Limit moisture. Apply as little liquid as practical and follow the cleaner’s prescribed technique. Rug Doctor’s upholstery-tool directions call for a spray pass followed by a pass without spraying to extract more liquid, and warn: “Do not overwet upholstery.” Use that dry extraction pass only if your model’s instructions specify it. - Let the mattress dry fully before use. The manufacturer instructions cited here do not establish a universal mattress drying time, so do not rely on a fixed number of hours; follow any guidance from your mattress maker.
What to do when instructions are missing or unclear
Do not treat portability, a spot-cleaning label, or an upholstery attachment as permission to clean a mattress. Contact the mattress or cleaner manufacturer for guidance on the exact mattress material and machine. If you cannot confirm that both allow the proposed cleaning, choose a method permitted by the mattress maker instead.
