Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before buying satellite internet equipment, check service availability at your exact address and confirm what the provider supplies, installs, and charges for. Satellite dishes and terminals are service-specific, so a generic dish or modem is not a safe substitute for the equipment approved for your service. For most households, the only separate hardware worth considering is a Wi-Fi router or mesh system if the included gateway cannot cover the home.
1. Confirm service and equipment for your address
Start with the provider, the exact service address, and the provider’s current offer—not a dish listing in a marketplace. Availability, kit contents, equipment ownership or lease terms, and installation options can vary by location and service. Ask the provider to identify the exact terminal or kit model and whether its required equipment is included, leased, or purchased.
For example, Viasat says customers must lease the satellite user-terminal equipment needed for service, and that the installer brings the equipment required for installation and use. Starlink describes its kit as a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Those arrangements are not interchangeable: verify the terms for the service you will actually order. Viasat installation process; Starlink specifications.
- Is service available at this address, and which plan and equipment model are offered?
- Is the terminal included, leased, or sold, and what happens to it if you cancel?
- Does the package include a Wi-Fi gateway, cables, power supply, and mounting hardware?
- Is professional installation standard, optional, or unavailable in your area?
Do not buy a satellite dish or modem until the provider confirms compatibility with your account and service.

2. Check whether a suitable dish location is possible
A satellite terminal needs a usable view of the sky; a router upgrade cannot compensate for an obstructed dish or unsuitable placement. Hughesnet and Viasat describe a clear view of the southern sky for installation. Starlink lists installation environment, dish angle and field of view among factors that can affect performance. Confirm the correct view direction and placement for your provider and actual location, rather than assuming all systems point the same way. Hughesnet standard installation FAQ; Viasat Home Internet FAQ; Starlink specifications.
Before ordering, consider trees, buildings, roof geometry, and whether the proposed mount location can keep the provider’s required field of view clear. If you rent or live under HOA rules, ask about permission for exterior equipment. Viasat’s installation instructions specifically advise checking landlord or HOA rules and preparing a clear southern-sky view. Viasat installation process.

3. Get the installation scope and extra-work charges in writing
“Installation included” does not necessarily mean every possible mounting or cable-routing job is included. Ask what the standard visit covers and request an itemized price for any work outside that scope before authorizing it.
| Provider example | Published installation details | What to verify for your order |
|---|---|---|
| Hughesnet | The standard residential installation FAQ describes an outdoor dish, cable run indoors to the modem, Wi-Fi modem and power supply setup, and connection of two devices. Nonstandard work or equipment costs are itemized and require customer authorization. Source | Whether the described work applies to your address and what counts as nonstandard. |
| Starlink | Professional installation availability varies by country. Starlink describes site assessment, location selection, mounting, cable routing, router connection and power-up, activation, testing, and an app walkthrough. Source | Whether professional installation is available locally and what the quoted service includes. |
| Viasat | Viasat describes technician-selected dish placement, installation and configuration, connection to the home, testing, and activation. Its instructions say to discuss nonstandard work. Source; Source | Which work is covered and whether extra mounting or routing work costs more. |
Ask specifically about nonstandard roof or wall mounts, long or difficult cable routes, trenching, and extra equipment. No single current total equipment-and-installation price is established across these providers; request an address-specific quote that separates recurring service charges from one-time work.

- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
4. Decide whether the included Wi-Fi gateway is enough
A separate router is optional, not a requirement for satellite service. Viasat says customers may use a standalone router and recommends considering Wi-Fi 6 or newer, frequency bands, coverage footprint, connected-device count, and whether the home is single- or multi-level. The included gateway may already serve the household adequately. Viasat Bring-Your-Own-Router guidance.
If parts of the home have weak Wi-Fi, compare a standalone Wi-Fi 6-or-newer router or mesh system against the included gateway. Check that the provider’s modem or gateway supports the configuration you intend to use. Mesh can help distribute Wi-Fi across a larger or multi-level home, but it improves the indoor wireless network only; it does not fix dish obstruction, service capacity, or plan limits.

- Coverage: Compare the router’s coverage claims with the home’s size, walls, and floors.
- Capacity: Consider how many devices connect at once and what they do.
- Compatibility: Confirm whether the provider gateway can work with a separate router or mesh system, and whether any settings are required.
- Wi-Fi features: Compare Wi-Fi generation and supported frequency bands rather than buying solely by brand or headline speed.
5. Buy mounts and other accessories only for the exact kit
Accessories are model-dependent. DISH’s Starlink installation guidance identifies a mount for the specific Starlink model and a cable-routing kit as possible additions for permanent installation; it also lists a UPS as a possible tool or accessory, not a universal requirement. Check the exact kit generation and installation plan before buying any mount, cable, or power accessory. DISH Starlink installation guidance.
Do not assume a mount or cable designed for one Starlink model fits another, or that a Starlink accessory works with Hughesnet or Viasat equipment. If a professional installer will do the work, ask whether the installer supplies the required parts before purchasing them yourself.
6. Treat speed figures as estimates, not purchase guarantees
Starlink’s published specifications, accessed in 2026, say users typically experience downloads between 25 and 220 Mbps and uploads between 5 and 20 Mbps, with a majority experiencing downloads above 100 Mbps. These are provider-published figures, not independent test results; Starlink says stated speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed and actual speeds may be lower during high usage. Starlink specifications.
Hughesnet likewise cautions that plan speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed and may vary. Compare the provider’s plan terms for your location rather than treating a speed range or a better router as a promise of a particular connection. Hughesnet Satellite Internet Buyer’s Guide.
