Android desktop mode lets multiple apps run in resizable windows, but there are two distinct experiences: desktop windowing on a tablet’s own screen and a desktop session opened on a connected external display. The connected-display experience is limited to supported devices; having Android 16 or a USB-C port alone does not establish compatibility.
What Android desktop windowing looks like on a tablet
On a tablet, apps open full screen by default. Enter desktop windowing by dragging the app’s window handle, opening its window menu, or using the keyboard shortcut documented in Android’s desktop windowing guide. Once in this mode, apps can run simultaneously in separate, resizable windows.
The interface has a taskbar along the bottom, with pinned apps, and a customizable header bar on each window. The header includes controls such as minimize and maximize. Other apps you open while desktop windowing is active also appear in desktop windows. To return to full-screen apps, close the active windows, drag a window handle to the top of the screen, or use the guide’s keyboard shortcut.
What happens when you resize an Android app window?
Resizing changes the window’s dimensions, but it does not guarantee the app will rearrange its interface to suit the new shape. Android applies compatibility behavior for apps with orientation or resizability restrictions; the result can still look awkward if the app was designed for a fixed phone layout.

Apps locked to portrait orientation
A portrait orientation lock does not prevent an app from being resized into a landscape-shaped window in desktop windowing. The app may not adapt its layout well to that shape, however.
Apps declared non-resizable
Android can scale a non-resizable app as its window changes size, preserving the app’s aspect ratio. This helps avoid distortion but does not make the app’s interface responsive: content can still be too small or poorly arranged for the available space.

Camera apps
For camera apps that lock orientation or declare themselves non-resizable, Android provides special viewfinder treatment. The window can resize while the viewfinder keeps its aspect ratio, reducing the risk of a stretched, sideways, or upside-down preview.
These behaviors are compatibility measures, not a guarantee of a polished desktop layout. Android warns that phone-shaped layouts can stretch, overlap, or put controls off-screen when shown in larger or differently shaped windows. A window-size change can also recreate an activity by default, so apps should preserve their state. How Android 16 changes app restrictions on large displays
For apps targeting Android 16 (API level 36), Android ignores orientation, resizability, and aspect-ratio restrictions on displays with a smallest width of at least 600dp. Android identifies tablets, the inner displays of large-screen foldables, and desktop windowing as relevant environments. The rule is about app behavior on qualifying displays; it does not mean every Android device supports desktop windowing or external-display sessions. Details and exceptions are in Android 16’s large-screen behavior documentation.
The documented exceptions are:
- Displays with a smallest width below 600dp.
- Games identified through the app category flag.
- Users who opt into an app’s default behavior in aspect-ratio settings.
Developers can temporarily opt out using PROPERTY_COMPAT_ALLOW_RESTRICTED_RESIZABILITY. Android’s documentation says this opt-out will be eliminated for apps targeting API level 37.

How desktop sessions work on external displays
With Android 16 QPR3, connected-display support reached general availability on supported devices. When a supported Android phone or foldable is connected to an external display, a desktop session starts on that display, with free-form or maximized app windows and multitasking. Google’s 2026 announcement describes the supported-device experience and specifically refers to supported Pixel and Samsung phones. It does not establish compatibility for every phone or foldable, so check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model.
On a supported device that already has desktop windowing, such as the tablet example in Google’s announcement, the session can extend across both displays. Apps, content, and the cursor can move between them. This is different from a phone setup where the desktop session starts on the external display.

Check display and accessory compatibility
Do not assume that any USB-C port can send video to a monitor. Verify that your device supports wired video output or the specific connected-display method it requires, then check that the monitor has a compatible input. A keyboard and mouse are optional desktop-style peripherals.
Why apps may behave differently across displays
Android’s developer guidance for connected displays is for apps to query display metrics dynamically rather than assume a fixed Display object, respond to density configuration changes, and support keyboard and mouse input. Android 16 QPR3 also includes compatibility treatments intended to scale windows and avoid app restarts when switching displays. These measures help, but app behavior still depends on how each app handles changing displays and input devices. See Google’s connected-display announcement.

What the August 2026 target-SDK deadline means
Google Play’s documentation says apps must target API level 36 as of August 2026; the page does not state a year. Target API deadlines vary by app store. This is a requirement for app distribution through Google Play, not evidence that a particular Android device supports desktop windowing or external-display output.
