Identify the device, install its supported app, and follow the matching pairing steps below.
First, identify which device you want to control
Check the TV’s model and platform in its Settings menu, often under About or System information, or find the model number on its label. If you use a streaming stick or box, the app for that device’s platform may be the one you need—not the TV manufacturer’s app. Google’s instructions apply to Android TV and Google TV devices, Roku’s to Roku TVs and players, and LG ThinQ’s to supported LG TVs.
Use the app that matches your TV platform
Android TV or Google TV
- Connect your phone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the Google TV app on your phone and tap Connect TV.
- Select your TV, enter the code shown on the television, and tap Pair.
Google’s Android TV virtual-remote instructions say, “To connect through Wi-Fi, make sure your device is on the same network as your Android TV.”
Roku TV or Roku player
- Install and open the Roku mobile app, then make sure your phone and Roku device are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- On the Roku, go to Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Control by mobile apps and allow mobile-app control.
- Try the app again. If it still cannot find the Roku, follow Roku’s mobile-app troubleshooting steps.
Supported LG TV
- Install LG ThinQ, sign in as prompted, and add your TV in the app.
- For Wi-Fi setup, connect both devices to the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, as specified in LG’s ThinQ setup instructions.
If the app cannot find the TV, check the network
- Confirm the phone is connected to Wi-Fi, not only mobile data, and compare the network name shown on the phone and TV.
- Check whether either device is on a guest network or an isolated Wi-Fi network. Router settings that keep devices apart can prevent local discovery; the exact cause depends on the network.
- Follow the requirements for your particular device. Google says certain Google TV devices require 5 GHz Wi-Fi and that WPA2-Enterprise is unsupported for Google TV device setup. Those setup requirements should not be assumed to apply to every remote-control session or every Google TV device. See Google’s setup guidance.
- Do not assume one Wi-Fi band is best for every brand: LG’s ThinQ setup guidance specifies the same 2.4 GHz network, while device requirements vary.
Refresh the connection and app
Restart and pair again
For Android TV, Google recommends unplugging the TV’s power cord, waiting 10 seconds, plugging it back in, and setting up the virtual remote again. Then repeat the pairing steps for the correct platform.

Update Roku app prerequisites on Android
For Roku app problems on Android, Roku recommends updating the Google Play Store and Google Play services, restarting the phone, and checking for an app update. Roku also says to confirm the Android device is Play Protect certified; rooted or uncertified devices may be incompatible. These checks are specific to Roku troubleshooting, not universal requirements for TV remote apps. See Roku’s troubleshooting guide.
If navigation works but the TV will not turn on
Controlling menus and waking a TV from standby are different capabilities. Phone-based power control depends on the model and its standby or network settings. LG says supported webOS 3.5 and later models can be turned on and off through ThinQ; older webOS versions offer power-off only. LG also describes Android power-on over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when the relevant TV setting is enabled. Check your exact model’s instructions rather than assuming the app can wake it.

When a physical remote is the better fallback
If the TV or streaming device does not support phone control, or the app remains unavailable, search for a replacement remote using the exact device model. Verify compatibility before buying: Sony notes that its IR-control feature applies only to specified products, may not work with all set-top boxes, and should be checked against the model manual. Samsung likewise provides model-specific guidance for controlling third-party devices with a universal remote. See Sony’s IR remote setup information and Samsung’s universal remote instructions. A phone’s IR blaster is an option only if that handset has one and its codes support the TV.
