If Snipping Tool captures an image but it does not appear where you expect, check the Screenshots folder and Snipping Tool’s save settings first. If the image will not paste, open the capture in Snipping Tool and test Ctrl+C separately from clipboard history. These checks help distinguish a changed save location, a clipboard-history issue, and an app-specific problem without assuming one cause.

First, check how Snipping Tool is supposed to work

In Windows 11, Windows+Shift+S opens the capture overlay. After you take a snip, it is copied to the Snipping Tool window, where you can edit, save, or share it. Microsoft’s current instructions also say captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder; Snipping Tool Settings can change automatic saving and the default folder. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover these controls.

With the captured image open in Snipping Tool, use Ctrl+S to save it or Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard. The Save as control lets you choose a location and filename for an additional copy.

If Snipping Tool is not saving screenshots

Check the Screenshots folder and save settings

  1. Open File Explorer and check the Screenshots folder for the capture.
  2. Open Snipping Tool, select its Settings, and check whether automatic saving is enabled and which folder is selected.
  3. Open a capture in Snipping Tool, choose Save as, and save it with a new filename to a location you know you can write to, such as your Documents folder.

If the manual save works but the file was not in the folder you expected, the capture succeeded; the automatic-save setting or destination may differ from what you assumed. If the manual save fails too, continue with the app repair steps below.

Save a test capture directly

Capture a small area, select the notification to open the image in Snipping Tool, then press Ctrl+S and choose a known destination. This tests saving the open image independently of where automatic saving is configured.

If a screenshot will not copy or paste

Test direct clipboard copying

  1. Capture a small area with Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Select the capture notification to open the image in Snipping Tool.
  3. Press Ctrl+C, then paste into an image-capable app such as Paint.

Microsoft also documents that a screenshot is copied to the clipboard after capture and a notification appears; selecting that notification opens the image in Snipping Tool. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts lists screenshot shortcuts, including Windows+Shift+S, Print Screen, and Alt+Print Screen.

Separate clipboard history from ordinary paste

Press Windows+V to open clipboard history. If prompted, select Turn on. Then test ordinary paste separately: a screenshot may paste even when it does not appear in history. Clipboard history is not the same as the current clipboard.

Microsoft Support’s Using the clipboard guidance says history holds up to 25 entries, supports a maximum item size of 4 MB, and is cleared on restart except for pinned items. An image missing from history therefore does not, by itself, show that capture or ordinary clipboard copying failed.

Try a built-in alternative to narrow the problem

Press Print Screen to copy a screen snapshot to the clipboard, or Alt+Print Screen to copy the active window. Paste the result into another app. Microsoft documents these as alternative screenshot-copying paths. Microsoft’s screen-copy guidance explains them.

If an alternative capture pastes but Snipping Tool’s editor copy does not, that suggests the problem may be specific to the Snipping Tool workflow; it does not prove a root cause. If neither path pastes, the issue may extend beyond Snipping Tool.

Repair or reset Snipping Tool

Windows offers app repair options for some installed apps. Microsoft cautions that they are not available for every app, so check whether they appear for Snipping Tool on your PC. Microsoft’s app repair instructions describe the process.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Snipping Tool, open its More menu, and select Advanced options.
  3. If available, select Repair, then test a new capture and save or copy it.
  4. If Repair is unavailable or does not fix the issue, return to the same screen and select Reset if that option is present.

Windows labels and option availability can differ by installation or release. If these controls are missing, skip this step rather than assuming the app has a repair option.

Use the symptom to choose the next check

What you observe What to check next
The screenshot exists, but not in the folder you expected Review Snipping Tool’s automatic-save setting and default folder; use Save as to choose a destination.
Ctrl+S saves, but automatic saving does not put the file where expected Check the automatic-save setting and configured Screenshots folder.
Ctrl+C pastes, but Windows+V does not show the image Check whether clipboard history is enabled; history and ordinary paste are separate.
Print Screen pastes, but copying from Snipping Tool does not Try repairing Snipping Tool if Windows provides the option; this comparison points toward the app workflow but does not establish a specific cause.
Neither capture path pastes into another app Test the destination app with another image or clipboard item to determine whether the issue is limited to screenshot capture.

Snipping Tool settings and behavior can vary with Windows releases and app updates. Microsoft’s support guidance documents the normal workflow and repair options, but does not establish one universal cause for saving or copying failures.
