Treat the image and its metadata as separate privacy checks: removing file properties does not hide text in the pixels, and editing the pixels does not prove that metadata is gone.
Use a narrow capture, then inspect the whole image
Close unrelated windows and hide notifications that could appear in the capture. Press Win+Shift+S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay in Windows 10 or Windows 11. Choose a rectangular or freeform snip, or capture a specific window, rather than the entire screen when a smaller image will do. Snipping Tool also supports full-screen captures. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance covers the capture modes and editing options.
Review the entire image, not just its main subject. Check the edges, title bars, browser tabs, taskbar, and notification area for names, messages, account details, addresses, or other context you did not intend to share. A tight capture reduces what is included, but it does not replace this visual check.
Redact sensitive information before sharing
If a detail must not be seen, crop it out or cover it with an opaque block. A highlight, underline, or translucent mark only draws attention to content; it may leave the information readable. Save the edited image as a new copy, reopen that copy, and confirm the sensitive detail is no longer visible in the exported image.

Snipping Tool’s Text actions can recognize text and offer quick redaction for detected email addresses and phone numbers. Microsoft says this text recognition runs locally on the device. The feature is not a complete privacy audit: inspect the rest of the image yourself, including other text and contextual details. Microsoft documents Text actions and quick redaction.
Check the saved file’s properties
Visible image content and file metadata are different. Microsoft defines image metadata as information embedded in an image file, such as the device used to capture it or the image’s dimensions. Its WIC Metadata Overview identifies EXIF, XMP, and PNG textual data among the metadata formats Windows Imaging Component can read and write.

That does not mean every Windows screenshot contains personal details, or that every screenshot tool adds or removes the same fields. PNG is not proof that metadata is absent: the W3C PNG specification defines an eXIf chunk that can carry metadata about the original image data.
- In File Explorer, right-click the saved screenshot and choose Properties.
- Review the details Windows makes available for that file. If the Properties window offers Remove Properties and Personal Information, use it to create or clean a copy as appropriate.
- Inspect the resulting copy again, including its visible image and the properties still available in Windows.
- Share only the verified copy, not an earlier draft or the original.
The properties control is not a guarantee that every metadata field has been removed from every image. Windows can show or remove only properties available for the particular file, so verify the copy rather than assuming the operation is exhaustive.

Check HTML snips for an included URL
If you save a browser snip as HTML, Microsoft’s support guidance says a URL may appear below the snip and documents an option to disable that behavior. Check the Snipping Tool setting for including a URL below snips, and inspect the saved HTML before sharing. This URL note applies to the documented HTML output; it should not be generalized to an ordinary PNG screenshot. Microsoft’s Australia support page describes the HTML setting.

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. If you still use Windows 10, consult current guidance for Windows 11 when checking Snipping Tool behavior and settings. Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.
