A Raspberry Pi Pip-Boy-style wearable combines a compact computer, a small display, portable power, physical controls and a custom enclosure worn on the forearm. The practical route is to choose a compatible board-and-screen setup, prototype the fit in cardboard, test the electronics and software outside the case, then assemble and trial-wear the finished unit.
There is no universal parts list: documented projects use different Raspberry Pi generations, displays, power arrangements and fabrication methods. In particular, an older guide’s software is explicitly out of date, so verify compatibility rather than assuming its instructions still work unchanged.
Choose the kind of build you want
Start with the function you want—such as a costume interface with demo screens or a more interactive project—and choose a display size that you can comfortably read on your forearm. Then select a board, display, operating system, drivers and software as one compatible combination. The projects below show possible directions, not interchangeable kits.
| Approach | Documented components and method | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Scrap-built Raspberry Pi Zero W | Raspberry Pi’s 2020 coverage describes a body made from scrap plastic, a Zero W, a display header mounted to GPIO, and a Python Pip-Boy-style interface with demo screens. The article links to a detailed Instructables guide with process photos. Raspberry Pi project coverage | A low-cost, upcycled fabrication direction, but the source describes it as a non-beginner project. Follow the linked build details and confirm that the parts and software suit your setup. |
| Materials-led forearm enclosure | Raspberry Pi Official Magazine suggests wide-bore pipe such as drainpipe, scrap plastics, a small container, foam floor mat, a 3.5-inch display, KY040 rotary encoder, three LEDs, two push-buttons, a power bank and wiring. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine build | Useful for planning a custom, hand-built enclosure. The listed components should not be presumed compatible with another project’s board or software. |
| Legacy 3D-printed Raspberry Pi build | Adafruit’s guide describes a Pi Model B+, 3.5-inch PiTFT, PowerBoost 1000C, rechargeable 2200mAh battery, rotary switch and encoder, speaker/audio amplifier, LED and 3D-printed enclosure. It includes a Python interface and map data. Adafruit Raspberry Pi Pip-Boy 3000 guide | The guide says its code is out of date and may require reverse engineering. Treat it as a legacy reference; verify board, display, driver, operating-system and power compatibility before buying parts or assembling. |
| Separate Pip-Boy 2040 project | Adafruit’s Pip-Boy 2040 uses a Feather RP2040 and CircuitPython with a small IPS screen and navigation controls; its documented demo is a slideshow. Adafruit Pip-Boy 2040 overview | This is not a Raspberry Pi single-board computer running a Pi OS. It is relevant as a wearable-prop reference, not as a Raspberry Pi build recipe. |
Plan the parts around compatibility
Think in component categories before shopping. The cited projects span different generations and designs, so a part appearing in one build does not establish that it will connect to another.

- Computer: Choose the Raspberry Pi board for your intended software and confirm its physical and electrical interfaces.
- Display: Select a small screen supported by your board, operating system and driver. A “3.5-inch Raspberry Pi display” is a useful search phrase reflected in multiple Pi build references, but size alone does not establish compatibility.
- Portable power: Plan for a power bank or a rechargeable-battery arrangement that matches the chosen board and display. The examples do not establish a guaranteed runtime.
- Controls: Rotary encoders, push-buttons and LEDs are documented options. Decide what each control should do before cutting enclosure openings or wiring it.
- Wiring and mounting: Allow space and access for connectors, strain relief and secure mounting; check the actual component dimensions.
- Enclosure and padding: Scrap plastic, pipe, foam and 3D-printed parts are among the documented fabrication choices. Design around your forearm and chosen electronics rather than assuming a printed file or pipe size will fit.
Build and test in stages
- Set a scope and select a verified combination. Decide what the interface should do and how large the screen can be. Choose one board/display/software combination whose connections, drivers and operating-system support you can verify. Do not assume the legacy Adafruit code runs unchanged.
- Mock up the forearm shape. Use paper or cardboard to check screen placement, enclosure dimensions and how the unit sits on your arm. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine recommends prototyping before committing to materials because repairs to glued assemblies can be difficult.
- Test electronics outside the final case. Connect the board, display, controls and power arrangement, then run the software before installing or sealing the components into the enclosure. Test as you go so a wiring or software issue is easier to reach.
- Build the enclosure around the working assembly. Cut, glue or print only after the mock-up and component arrangement are satisfactory. Leave practical access for charging, switching, connections and any adjustments your design requires.
- Wear-test it at home before an event. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine recommends an ordinary-day trial. Check comfort, arm movement, dexterity, snagging and whether the unit could damage nearby objects.
Plan for comfort as well as electronics
A forearm computer can be functional on a workbench but awkward to wear. The documented projects use different portable-power choices and enclosure materials, including foam or a shaped arm case; these are design examples, not runtime, weight or comfort guarantees. Check how the power source and screen affect balance, whether controls remain reachable, and whether the enclosure allows normal arm movement. Make adjustments after the home wear trial rather than discovering fit problems at a costume event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use project references for what they establish
The Raspberry Pi Zero W coverage is useful for seeing a scrap-built approach and a Python demo interface; the magazine article emphasizes materials, prototyping and wear trials; and the Adafruit Pi guide documents a more elaborate printed build while warning that its code is outdated. None makes the parts universally compatible or establishes a standard build time, runtime or performance level. The separate Pip-Boy 2040 is a different microcontroller-based project, despite the similar name.
