After using a portable carpet cleaner, turn it off, empty and rinse the dirty-water tank, and clean the removable parts your model’s manual identifies. Then clean the tool and hose only by the method specified for your machine, and let components dry as directed before storage. The exact steps differ by model, so do not assume every tank, hose, or clean-water reservoir should be handled the same way.
After-use cleaning routine
- Turn the cleaner off. BISSELL’s SpotClean/Little Green ProHeat instructions say to turn the machine off when cleaning is complete. Follow your model’s manual for whether and when to unplug it before maintenance; do not open or service a powered machine.
- Empty the dirty-water tank promptly. Remove it as directed and pour its contents into an appropriate drain. BISSELL says to empty and clean the tank after cleaning or when it is full. Keep the liquid below the tank’s marked FULL line.
- Rinse the tank and removable parts identified in the manual. For the listed SpotClean/Little Green ProHeat models, BISSELL directs owners to remove and clean the float stack and tank to clear loose debris. Tank construction and removable components differ, so do not force a part that does not release as described in your manual.
- Clean the tool and hose using the model’s method. For Big Green Pet Pro models 3288, 32886, and 3232, BISSELL directs owners to detach the tool and rinse it under warm water, then detach the hose and run water through both ends. This is not a universal hose-flushing instruction; use it only if your model’s manual calls for it.
- Check what to do with unused solution. Instructions reviewed here do not establish a rule for every clean-water tank. Check your manual to see whether to empty the reservoir, leave solution in it, or take another step.
- Dry and store the parts as directed. BISSELL says owners of the cited Big Green Pet Pro models should let the dirty-water tank fully dry before reassembling it. Follow your own model’s drying instructions; no single drying time applies to all machines. Store the cleaner where it is protected, with the hose routed without forcing, obstructing, or sharply stressing it.

Water, solution, and fabric precautions
Use only the water temperature your manual allows
For the SpotClean/Little Green ProHeat models listed above, BISSELL specifies warm tap water up to 140°F/60°C maximum and warns hotter water can deform the tank. Rug Doctor separately says not to use boiled or microwaved water in its Portable Spot Cleaner. These are model-specific directions, not a shared temperature rule for all machines.
Use compatible cleaning solution
BISSELL identifies compatible BISSELL portable carpet-cleaner formulas for the cited ProHeat machines and recommends genuine formula for optimal performance. Confirm compatibility in your own manual. The available manufacturer instructions do not support substituting household products such as vinegar, bleach, or dish soap.
Check upholstery and rug care instructions
Rug Doctor advises checking the textile maker’s care tag, using its spot cleaner on W or W/S-coded items, avoiding S, X, or Dry Clean Only items with that machine, and testing the solution in an inconspicuous area before cleaning. Treat this as Rug Doctor’s guidance for its Portable Spot Cleaner, not as a substitute for the textile maker’s directions or another cleaner’s manual.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving dirty water in the recovery tank after the job, or filling it above its marked limit.
- Pulling out a float, tank section, or other component without following the model’s removal instructions.
- Flushing a hose because another machine’s manual recommends it; hose-cleaning methods vary.
- Using hotter water than the manufacturer allows, including boiled or microwaved water where the manual prohibits it.
- Adding an unapproved household cleaner or assuming the clean-water tank must always be emptied or can always remain filled.
- Reassembling wet parts when the applicable manual says they must dry first.
