Why Series X is the best Halo console for most players
Series X is the clearest choice if you want the strongest supported version of Halo Infinite and have a 4K TV or monitor. Microsoft lists the game as optimized for Series X|S and says Series X can deliver 4K and up to 120 FPS on supported maps and modes. Those are conditional capabilities, not a promise that every map, mode or moment uses both settings. Check that your display supports the features you want.
For a physical Halo collection, choose a Series X model with a disc drive. The Series X name covers both disc-drive and all-digital configurations, so do not assume a console listing includes one.
When Series S makes more sense
Choose Series S if your games are digital, you do not need to play discs, and a 1440p target suits your screen and priorities. It plays Halo Infinite and is optimized for the game, but Microsoft’s stated 4K and up-to-120-FPS Halo features apply to Series X in supported maps and modes. Series S can upscale to 4K, which is different from native 4K output.

Series S cannot play physical discs. If you already own Halo or other Xbox games on disc, a Series S will not let you use those copies.
Can you play Halo Infinite on Xbox Series S?
Yes. Microsoft lists Halo Infinite for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and identifies it as optimized for Series X|S. Series S is the digital-only console, so you need a digital copy or another digital access option rather than a disc.

Do you need Game Pass for Halo Infinite multiplayer?
Microsoft describes Halo Infinite multiplayer as free-to-play, but its Xbox product listing says online console multiplayer requires an Xbox Game Pass subscription, sold separately. The free-to-play description does not remove the stated console online-multiplayer subscription requirement. Check the current listing for subscription terms before playing, since those terms can change.
What about older Halo games?
Do not assume every older Halo release works on either new console just because Xbox supports backward compatibility. Microsoft’s FAQ covers select Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, notes that features vary by game, and says downloads may be required. Look up each specific Halo title in the current compatibility information before choosing a console based on your older-game library.
