Choose by where the buyer completes the purchase and how much checkout logic you want Stripe to manage. Hosted Checkout is the lowest-UI-work option for a buyer sent to your site; Payment Element with PaymentIntents gives your team a more direct role in the payment flow. But they are not a strict either-or: Checkout Sessions can also be embedded or used with Elements for a custom interface. If the buyer stays inside an AI platform or an agent pays through an API without a conventional checkout page, treat that as a separate agentic-commerce architecture—not as a Payment Element configuration.
First decide where the transaction happens
An AI shopping assistant can influence a purchase without changing where payment takes place. Stripe’s agentic-commerce guide distinguishes three patterns; the right Stripe integration depends on which one your product actually implements.
The agent sends the buyer to your website
This is browser checkout: the AI helps discover or select a product, then the buyer finishes on the merchant’s site. Stripe describes its Optimized Checkout Suite and Link in this context. Once the buyer reaches your site, the decision between hosted Checkout, embedded Checkout Sessions, and Payment Element is still a checkout design decision. Stripe’s agentic-commerce guide describes this browser flow.
The buyer pays inside the AI platform
This is embedded checkout, not simply an embedded payment form on your own site. Stripe describes Delegated Checkout and Shared Payment Tokens for this pattern. The platform can request product, fulfillment, shipping, and payment options while the merchant remains the seller and continues to handle responsibilities such as fulfillment, refunds, and customer service. A Payment Element on the merchant’s site does not, by itself, implement this platform-mediated flow. Stripe’s guide explains the distinction.

An agent purchases through an API
A headless flow has no conventional buyer-facing checkout page. Stripe describes machine-payment protocols for API-oriented agent transactions. That is a different integration problem from choosing which payment form to render on a website; do not assume either hosted Checkout or Payment Element alone supplies the agent-facing purchase interface. Stripe’s guide to agentic commerce separates this pattern from browser and embedded checkout.
Compare the actual integration choices
“Checkout” can mean Stripe’s Checkout Sessions API and its hosted or embedded presentation modes. Payment Element is an embedded component for collecting payment details; Stripe documents using it with either PaymentIntents or Checkout Sessions. The meaningful comparison is therefore both about presentation and about which checkout responsibilities your integration delegates.

| Option | Where the form appears | Who manages the flow | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Checkout Sessions, hosted mode | Stripe-hosted page; the buyer is redirected from the merchant site to the Session URL. | Checkout Sessions manage the checkout session and support Stripe’s managed checkout capabilities. | Teams that want a prebuilt checkout page and do not need the payment form to remain on their site. |
| Checkout Sessions, embedded mode | Embedded in the merchant’s site. | Checkout Sessions remain the underlying checkout API. | Teams that want an on-site checkout presentation while using Checkout Sessions. |
| Checkout Sessions with Elements, custom UI mode | A custom merchant checkout page using Elements. | Checkout Sessions retain managed functions such as tax, discounts, shipping, and currency conversion, as described in Stripe’s custom UI mode documentation. | Teams that need more control over the page design but still want Checkout Sessions-managed capabilities. |
| Payment Element with PaymentIntents | Embedded in the merchant’s site. | The integration uses PaymentIntents and gives the team a more direct role in managing payment creation and the payment flow. | Teams that want to manage more of the payment experience directly and are prepared to build around that choice. |
Stripe describes hosted, embedded, and custom UI modes for Checkout Sessions, and supports payment, setup, and subscription Session modes. Its Checkout Sessions API reference covers the Session and its modes; the Checkout quickstarts distinguish hosted from embedded integrations. Stripe’s custom UI mode changelog entry, for API version 2025-03-31, says this mode supports Elements with Checkout Sessions and continues to manage tax, discounts, shipping, and currency conversion.
When to choose each approach
Choose hosted Checkout when reducing checkout UI work matters most
Your server creates a Checkout Session, and the buyer is redirected to the Session URL to pay. This avoids building the payment form itself, at the cost of sending the buyer to a Stripe-hosted page. Stripe’s quickstarts describe the hosted flow. This can fit an AI referral journey in which the user arrives at the merchant website and proceeds to a hosted payment page.

Choose embedded Checkout Sessions when the form should stay on your site
Embedding does not require abandoning Checkout Sessions. Use its embedded mode when you want the checkout presented on the merchant site, or consider custom UI mode when you need a more tailored page built with Elements. This is an important middle ground: a custom appearance does not automatically mean your team must move checkout management to PaymentIntents.
Choose Payment Element with PaymentIntents when you want more direct payment-flow control
Stripe’s migration guide describes replacing separate payment-method Elements with one Payment Element and using it with PaymentIntents. Stripe says eligible payment methods can be shown based on factors including transaction amount, currency, and payment flow. The integration is the fit when your team intends to manage payment creation and more of the flow directly, rather than selecting it merely because it is an embedded form. See Stripe’s Payment Element migration guide.

Prefer Checkout Sessions if Stripe-managed checkout tasks are important
Stripe’s migration guidance specifically points teams that need subscriptions, tax, discounts, shipping, or currency conversion toward Checkout Sessions. That guidance makes the choice more than a visual one: Checkout Sessions can supply those managed capabilities while still allowing embedded or custom UI presentations. Confirm the precise feature behavior and requirements against the current Stripe documentation for your integration. Stripe’s migration guide sets out this recommendation.

If “onsite” means the AI assistant is on the merchant’s website and the buyer completes payment there, select the checkout architecture by the experience you want after the assistant has assembled the cart:

- Keep a custom page but retain managed checkout capabilities: evaluate Checkout Sessions with Elements in custom UI mode.
- Keep the purchase inside an external AI platform: investigate Delegated Checkout and Shared Payment Tokens rather than treating an on-site form choice as the solution.

Stripe announced its Agentic Commerce Suite on December 11, 2025, describing it as powered by Checkout Sessions and supporting aspects of checkout such as shipping and taxes. The announcement also describes a dedicated hosted endpoint for agentic-commerce product, price, and availability data. These are Stripe product descriptions, not evidence that every agentic flow is available to every merchant or region; check current product documentation and eligibility before designing around a capability. See Stripe’s announcement.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Stripe’s documentation establishes integration modes and capabilities, not a universal winner for AI-shopping conversion, implementation speed, security, or compliance. The materials cited here do not provide a neutral comparative conversion study of Checkout Sessions and Payment Element in onsite AI shopping. Choose based on control, managed checkout scope, and transaction location; do not promise higher conversion or shorter implementation time without evidence specific to your product and audience.
Stripe describes Shared Payment Tokens as allowing agents to initiate payments using a buyer’s saved payment method without exposing the payment credentials, with tokens scoped to a seller, amount, and time window. That is a description of Stripe’s mechanism, not a general legal or security guarantee. Review the current product terms and technical documentation before relying on it in a design. Stripe’s agentic-commerce guide describes the tokens and their scope.
