Start by checking the affected view’s layout, then determine whether the problem comes from one card or the whole dashboard. In Home Assistant, Sections, Masonry, Panel, and Sidebar arrange cards differently; the right fix depends on which view you use and what looks wrong. Make one reversible change at a time, and avoid taking control of an automatically generated dashboard until you understand what that changes.
First, identify what looks wrong
Before changing the dashboard, describe the symptom: cards are too wide or narrow, text is clipped, controls are difficult to tap, cards appear in an unexpected order, the page requires excessive scrolling, or the phone layout differs from desktop.
If you can, compare the same view in the phone’s browser and the Home Assistant Companion App. This helps determine whether the difference follows the dashboard or appears only in one client; it does not, by itself, establish the cause.
Check the view type before editing cards
Home Assistant views determine how cards are arranged. The official dashboard views documentation describes four layouts:

- Sections: Cards are organized into sections in a grid. This view offers controls for grouping and card sizing.
- Masonry: Cards are arranged in columns according to their size.
- Panel: One card fills the view. It is intended for a single-card display, not a general arrangement of multiple cards.
- Sidebar: The desktop layout has a wide column and a smaller column. On mobile, all cards render in one column, in YAML order, according to the Sidebar view documentation.
Check the affected view’s settings and compare its layout with the arrangement you want on the phone. Don’t assume that a two-column desktop layout will remain side by side on mobile.
If the view is Panel
Panel view requires exactly one card and stretches that card to the full width of the view. If you expect several cards, check whether Panel is intentional for this dashboard. The Panel view documentation states: “The panel view must have exactly one card.”

If the view is Sidebar
A one-column phone layout is expected: cards appear in a single column and follow the order specified in the YAML configuration. If the order is the problem, inspect that ordering rather than trying to preserve the desktop columns on a narrow screen.
Resize a card in a Sections view
If the view uses Sections and one card is too large or too small, adjust that card’s layout before rebuilding the dashboard:

- Enter dashboard edit mode and open the affected card’s settings.
- Open the card’s Layout tab and use the grid size picker to change the columns and rows the card occupies.
- If needed, enable Full width or Precise sizing for finer control.
- Use the interface’s option to revert to the default size if the adjustment makes the layout worse.
These controls are described in Home Assistant’s Sections view documentation. Change one setting at a time and note its original value so you can restore it.
The Layout tab is not available for cards inside nested vertical stack, horizontal stack, or grid cards, and it is not available for Picture Elements. If you do not see the tab, edit the outer card or use that card type’s own configuration instead, as noted in the Sections documentation.

Understand the consequence of taking control
When editing an automatically generated dashboard, you may see a Take control prompt. Taking control stops that dashboard from automatically receiving new dashboard elements as they become available. Home Assistant allows you to create a new default dashboard, but a dashboard you have taken over cannot be returned to its previous automatic-updating behavior. Review the trade-off in the dashboard documentation before proceeding. For a phone layout problem, first check whether a focused view or card adjustment will solve it without changing the dashboard’s update behavior.

If the overall arrangement looks sensible but one card renders badly, investigate that card rather than changing the entire view. Home Assistant dashboards can include community custom cards, as described in the dashboard overview. The official design guidance explains that custom cards need suitable default, minimum, and maximum dimensions to fit the Sections grid: A Home-Approved Dashboard, chapter 1.

Try these checks one at a time, keeping track of the original settings:
- Temporarily compare the problem card with a standard built-in card in the same view.
- If you use a custom card, check its configuration and whether its minimum dimensions suit the available grid space.
- Temporarily test the default theme if a theme is active.
- Compare the view in another phone browser or client, if available.
These are ways to narrow down the source of the rendering difference, not proof of a known Home Assistant bug. The general documentation cannot identify the cause on a particular installation; view type, card configuration, theme, phone, and client may all matter.
What to include when asking for help
If the issue persists, share enough detail for someone to distinguish a layout problem from a card or client issue:
- Home Assistant version, phone model, and screen size.
- Whether you are using the Companion App or a browser.
- The dashboard view type and active theme.
- The affected card’s name, including whether it is a custom card.
- A screenshot and, if useful, a small sanitized YAML excerpt.
Remove credentials and avoid exposing private entity names in screenshots or configuration excerpts.
