You can often make a PDF smaller while keeping it readable, but no method guarantees zero quality loss or a smaller file. The right approach depends on what is taking up space: images, fonts, or other document data. Keep the original, compress a copy, and check the result at the size people will read or print it.
Choose a compression method for the kind of PDF you have
Image-heavy PDFs, such as scans and photo portfolios, may shrink most when their images are recompressed or resampled. A text-first PDF may have little image data to reduce; it may already be optimized or be dominated by content that a particular compression setting does not change.
Compression can be lossless or lossy. Lossless Flate compression preserves image data. JPEG recompression is lossy, and downsampling reduces image resolution. Those changes can save space, but may soften photos, fine lines, or small text in scanned pages. Adobe describes these options in its PDF optimization settings.
- Mostly selectable text: Try an optimizer or structural compression first; there may be little to gain if the file is already compact.
- Scanned pages or photographs: Image compression is more likely to affect file size, but inspect text and detail carefully after applying it.
- Fine graphics or print-critical pages: Avoid aggressive downsampling or lossy recompression unless you have checked the output at the intended print size.
There is no universally safe resolution or predictable percentage reduction for every PDF. The result depends on the file and settings.

Compress a PDF with Acrobat
Adobe documents several Acrobat workflows. Names and availability can differ by version and platform.
Use the Compress a PDF tool
- Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose the Compress a PDF tool.
- Apply compression, then save the result as a new file rather than overwriting the original.
- Compare the new file’s size with the original and inspect pages with small text, fine lines, or important images.

For Adobe’s web workflow, sign in, choose Convert > Compress a PDF, select the file, and start compression. The cited documentation does not establish current account requirements, pricing, or data-retention terms, so check the service’s current terms before uploading a sensitive document.

Save a reduced-size PDF
Adobe also documents a reduced-size workflow for Windows and macOS: choose Save as Other > Reduced size PDF, select compatibility, and save the new file. Adobe’s Help Center page was last updated September 23, 2025; see its PDF optimization instructions.
Use command-line tools when you need more control
Ghostscript
Ghostscript’s pdfwrite output device can rewrite a PDF, with controls that affect image size. It does not guarantee a smaller output. Lossy recompression can reduce quality, and recompressing images that are already JPEG-compressed can cause substantial degradation. Save to a separate output file, then verify both its size and appearance. See the Ghostscript PDF optimization guidance.

qpdf
qpdf can recompress streams and perform some other size-reduction operations, but image resampling is not part of its process. Its documentation says size optimization is not its primary purpose, so it is not a substitute for image-focused compression when images dominate the file. See the qpdf command-line documentation.

- Keep the source: Note the original file size and make a copy to compress.
- Check the new size: Confirm the result is smaller enough to meet the email or upload limit. If it barely changes, the file may already be optimized or the chosen operation may not affect its largest contents.
- Inspect readability: Open the output and check small text, fine lines, photographs, and any pages that matter most. Review it at the intended screen or print scale.
- Check required features: Make sure the pages and document features you rely on still work before sharing the compressed copy.
- Adjust one setting at a time: If the reduction is insufficient, try a different targeted setting rather than repeatedly applying increasingly aggressive compression.
When choosing between a guided app, a browser workflow, or a command-line utility, weigh the likely size reduction for your particular file against clarity, ease of use, upload requirements, and compatibility with the PDF features you need. No general benchmark establishes a typical saving across PDFs.
