The best alternative depends on what you mean by “conversational checkout.” If you want customers to buy inside an AI conversation, compare agentic commerce routes such as Stripe/OpenAI’s ACP-powered ChatGPT checkout and the UCP direction documented by Google and Shopify. If you only want support chat beside an existing checkout, Shopify’s checkout chat is a different tool. If you want to replace Stripe’s payment page, compare hosted or platform checkout options separately: a commerce protocol is not a complete store or payment processor.

First decide what part of checkout you want to change

“Stripe Checkout alternative” can describe three different jobs. A hosted checkout page takes payment after a shopper reaches your site. Conversational commerce may instead let an AI assistant help discover a product and hand the shopper to your site, or keep the purchase flow inside the AI interface. A support chat answers questions alongside an existing checkout; it does not necessarily let the shopper buy in the conversation.

  • Replace or customize the payment experience: compare hosted checkout pages, embedded payment forms, platform checkouts, or API-based integrations.
  • Enable buying in an AI surface: assess the commerce protocol, payment handler, platform integration, and merchant eligibility.
  • Help shoppers while they check out: evaluate support-chat placement and restrictions separately from payment processing.

Stripe’s Agentic Commerce guide describes two conversational patterns: an assistant can direct a buyer to a business’s website, or an embedded checkout can keep the buyer in the AI interface. Those patterns differ in handoffs, integration work, and who coordinates the order.

Compare the main options by what they actually do

Option Buyer experience What it is Important qualification
Stripe Checkout Hosted checkout page, embedded payment form, or a more customized flow Payment and checkout options documented by Stripe Stripe’s quickstarts describe hosted, embedded, and Checkout Sessions plus Elements approaches; Payment Links can also be shared through channels such as email or SMS.
Stripe/OpenAI ACP and ChatGPT Instant Checkout Purchase within a ChatGPT conversation An agentic commerce route using the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) Stripe announced the integration on September 29, 2025. The announcement initially described US ChatGPT users buying from US Etsy businesses and said Shopify merchant support was coming; that initial scope should not be treated as current availability.
Google and Shopify UCP Conversational discovery and checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini, alongside other documented commerce flows The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a route spanning product discovery, checkout, orders, and post-purchase journeys Google documents native checkout for AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify’s January 11, 2026 announcement describes conversational purchases, embedded checkouts in apps, and web-based commerce flows. Protocol support alone does not establish that a particular merchant or payment setup is eligible.
PayPal Agent Ready with Braintree Payment integration paths for ChatGPT Apps and Google AI surfaces PayPal documents an ACP integration for ChatGPT Apps using delegated payment tokens through Braintree, and a UCP integration for Google AI Mode and Gemini using Google Pay through Braintree These are payment-handler/integration routes to evaluate, not necessarily replacements for an ecommerce platform or the whole store stack. Confirm market and merchant eligibility and rollout.
Shopify checkout chat Real-time support chat on specified checkout-related pages A hosted chat application for buyer support Shopify documents availability for Shopify Plus on Checkout and Thank You pages, and for other plans on the Thank You page. It is limited to public real-time support apps and is not documented as native purchasing inside a separate AI conversation.

What changes when a buyer stays in an AI conversation?

A conversational interface does not remove the work of running a store. In Stripe’s description of embedded checkout, the seller remains the merchant of record and is responsible for tax, fulfillment, refunds, and customer service. The seller also needs to provide product, fulfillment, shipping, and payment options for the embedded flow. Decide who owns each part of the journey before choosing a protocol or payment integration.

  • Requires processing through Powering POS. For US, PR, USVI businesses only

  • Start small and expand when needed: Mini works with all other Clover devices and can expand with accessories to build a complete system so your system can grow as your business grows.
  • Inventory at your fingertips: keep your inventory organized and accessible with categories, labels, modifiers and variants that you control.
  • Sales info in real time: monitor transactions as they happen with info like hourly sales and top selling items or refund and discount volume.
  • Product and availability: determine how the assistant receives accurate product information and stock status.
  • Shipping and taxes: establish which system supplies delivery options and calculates applicable taxes.
  • Order creation and fulfillment: verify how a completed conversation becomes an order in the merchant’s systems and how it is delivered.
  • Returns, refunds, and service: identify who handles post-purchase questions and makes the relevant decisions.

With browser-based checkout, the assistant can recommend an item and send the shopper to the merchant’s website; the site’s conventional checkout remains part of the experience. With embedded checkout, the AI platform can keep the buyer in its interface, but that shifts more integration and coordination into the commerce flow.

How to choose the right route

  1. Write down the intended buyer journey. Decide whether the shopper should land on your site, complete a purchase inside an AI interface, or get support beside an existing checkout.
  2. Match the integration to the job. For a payment page or form, compare Stripe’s hosted, embedded, and Elements-based routes with the checkout your commerce platform provides. For in-chat purchasing, assess ACP or UCP support and the relevant AI surface. For customer questions during checkout, assess support-chat placement and app requirements.
  3. Map operational ownership. Confirm which systems handle live catalog data, shipping, taxes, order creation, fulfillment, refunds, and customer service. Do not assume that a protocol takes over these responsibilities.
  4. Check compatibility and eligibility. Verify your commerce platform, payment handler, merchant plan, geography, currency support, and the current rollout for the specific AI surface. An announcement or protocol specification does not guarantee access for every seller.
  5. Balance speed against control. Hosted checkout and payment links are simpler to adopt. Embedded components and protocol integrations may provide a more continuous buyer experience, but require integration work and coordination across commerce systems.

Availability claims need a date and a market

Conversational commerce availability is time-sensitive. Stripe’s September 29, 2025 announcement described an initial US shopper and seller scope for ChatGPT Instant Checkout and identified Shopify support as forthcoming at that time. Shopify’s January 11, 2026 announcement describes UCP-related commerce flows, while PayPal’s Agent Ready documentation was reported as last updated June 10, 2026. None of those dates, by itself, establishes what a particular merchant can activate today. Confirm current support and eligibility with the provider for your country, platform, and account before planning a launch.
