In Adobe Audition, export a single audio file from the Waveform editor with File > Export > File or use File > Save As to create a named copy. For a Multitrack session, use File > Export > Multitrack Mixdown, then choose whether to render a time selection, the entire session, or selected clips. Pick the destination format and review its settings before exporting.
Choose the workflow for your project
Audition has separate workflows for editing one audio file and mixing a session. Check the editor before you export: a waveform is a single audio file, while a multitrack session combines tracks, clips, routing, and effects.
| What you are working with | Use this command | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| One file open in Waveform | File > Export > File | Exports the audio while leaving the current file open. |
| One file open in Waveform | File > Save As | Saves a copy under a chosen name and location. |
| A Multitrack session | File > Export > Multitrack Mixdown | Renders audio from the session using the selected mixdown scope. |
Saving a multitrack session is not the same as exporting its finished sound. Audition’s SESX session file stores session information and references to source media; use a mixdown to create a rendered audio file. See Adobe’s Save and export audio files in Audition.
Export a single audio file from Waveform
- Open the audio file in the Waveform editor.
- Choose File > Export > File to export and keep the current file open, or choose File > Save As to save a copy with a new name or location.
- In the export or save dialog, set the filename, destination, and output format.
- Review the sample type and format settings, including sample rate, bit depth, and any format-specific options.
- Confirm the settings and export or save the file.
Use Save As when you want a separately named file. Choose Export > File when you want to render an output file without replacing the file currently open in Audition.

Export a multitrack session
- Open the session in the Multitrack editor.
- Choose File > Export > Multitrack Mixdown.
- Select the scope you need: Time Selection, Entire Session, or Selected Clips.
- Set the destination, filename, and format, then review sample type, format, mixdown, and metadata settings.
- Export the mixdown.
The resulting audio reflects the session’s volume, pan, effects, and routing to the mix track. Adobe’s multitrack editor overview explains the session view and its controls.
Choose the right mixdown scope
- Time Selection: exports only the range you have selected on the timeline.
- Entire Session: exports the session as a whole.
- Selected Clips: exports the clips you selected rather than the full session.
Export tracks or channel layouts
If you need separate track exports or multiple channel layouts, check the mixdown options. They can export tracks separately or produce mono, stereo, and 5.1 mixdowns. This is useful for stems or alternate deliverables; it is different from archiving a session and its associated media.

Choose an output format and settings
Let the recipient, platform, or production specification determine the format. WAV and AIFF are common uncompressed choices; MP3 is compressed and commonly used for web or portable-player distribution. Neither is universally best: uncompressed formats preserve audio without lossy MP3 encoding, while MP3 can reduce file size.
- For WAV or AIFF: confirm the recipient accepts the format and specify the required sample rate and bit depth.
- For MP3: choose bitrate or variable-quality settings to balance file size and quality. Avoid repeatedly saving and recompressing an MP3, because each compression pass can reduce quality.
- For any format: check the destination’s technical requirements rather than assuming a particular rate or bit depth.
Audition’s sample type controls sample rate and bit depth. Adobe documents sample rates from 6,000 to 192,000 Hz, although which rates are available can depend on the audio hardware in use. During sample conversion, Adobe recommends enabling the pre/post filter to prevent aliasing noise; higher conversion quality is especially useful when downsampling. See Adobe’s guidance on working with sample types.

Use Adobe Media Encoder for a multitrack session
To send a multitrack session into Media Encoder, choose File > Export > Export with Adobe Media Encoder. Adobe says the mix track is exported by default. Select Change to configure how tracks route to output channels, and use current versions of both Audition and Media Encoder for this workflow. Choose this route when you need Media Encoder’s export workflow; use Audition’s Multitrack Mixdown when its direct mixdown settings meet the delivery need. Details are in Adobe’s export documentation.

WAV files larger than 4 GB
For a WAV file that exceeds 4 GB, Audition supports RF64. Adobe recommends RF64 for compatibility with a wide range of applications. Check that the intended recipient or playback software supports it.
