To add two-factor authentication to Google Drive, turn on 2-Step Verification for the Google Account you use to access Drive. There is no separate Drive-only switch: the setting protects sign-ins to that Google Account, including access to Drive. You can enable it in your account’s security settings and choose from the methods Google makes available.

Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google Account

  1. Sign in to the Google Account you use for Google Drive.
  2. Open Google Account Help’s 2-Step Verification setup and follow the account settings link, or open your Google Account and select Security & sign-in.
  3. Under How you sign in to Google, select Turn on 2-Step Verification.
  4. Follow the prompts and select a verification method offered for your account. Complete the setup and confirm that 2-Step Verification is on.
  5. Add recovery options and another usable second-step method if available, so losing access to one device does not leave you without a sign-in path.

Google may present different challenges depending on the sign-in. A password sign-in may require another step, while signing in with a passkey can verify possession and bypass a separate second step. Google’s setup instructions also note that work, school, or other managed accounts may require help from an administrator.

Choose a method you can use reliably

The setup flow shows which options are available for your account. Google documents prompts, passkeys, authenticator-app codes, text or call codes, backup codes, and hardware security keys. These methods differ in phishing protection, connectivity needs, and recovery implications.

Method What to consider
Google prompts A sign-in prompt goes to a device where you are signed in. You need access to that device to approve it.
Passkey Passkeys can provide phishing protection. A passkey sign-in may itself verify possession, so Google may not ask for a separate second step.
Authenticator-app code The app generates one-time codes that do not require internet or mobile service at the time you use them.
Text or call code These can be convenient, but Google warns they may be vulnerable to phone-number-based attacks.
Backup code A code can help when your usual second step is unavailable. Each code becomes inactive after use.
Hardware security key Google says FIDO1 or FIDO2 security keys can be used as a second step. Keys and passkeys offer phishing protection; a key is optional, not required.

Google describes security keys as its most secure verification step. If you choose a physical key, consider how you would sign in if it were lost; another second-step option or a backup key can help. A key-based passkey requires FIDO2, according to Google’s security-key guidance. Use the exact choices shown in your account rather than assuming every method is available to everyone.

Prepare a recovery route before you need one

Save backup codes safely

Backup codes can be used when your normal second step is unavailable, such as when you cannot access your phone. Keep them somewhere secure and do not share them. A used code becomes inactive, and generating a new set invalidates the previous set. See Google’s instructions for backup codes.

Plan for a lost security key

Google recommends adding other ways to prove your identity in case a key is lost. If you still have another second step, sign in, remove the missing key, obtain a replacement, and add it. If no other second step is available, you may need to use account recovery. Google’s lost-key guidance explains the available recovery path.

Do not disclose verification codes

Never share a verification code with someone who asks for it. Google says it will not call you to verify a code. Its guidance on security keys and sign-in safety explains the risks of code-based verification.

If the option is missing on a work or school account

An organization may control whether 2-Step Verification is available or required. If your work, school, or other managed account does not show the setup option or setup fails, contact its administrator rather than trying to change the policy yourself. Google Workspace administrators can configure policies and available methods for users, so controls may differ by organization. See Google Workspace’s 2-Step Verification guidance.

Advanced Protection on a Workspace account has an additional administrator requirement. Google says an administrator must enable it for the organization; its Advanced Protection questions also recommend a primary and backup security key for users who choose keys.
