Satellite internet sends data between your home and an orbiting satellite network; traditional broadband usually carries it over ground-based fiber, coaxial cable, telephone lines, or fixed wireless. Satellite can serve places outside wired networks, but performance depends on the specific service, orbit, address, network demand, and an unobstructed view of the sky.

How the connection reaches your home

With satellite service, a customer terminal—often a dish or electronically steered antenna—sends and receives radio signals through satellites, which connect onward to internet infrastructure. Starlink describes its receiving equipment as a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount (Starlink specifications).

Traditional broadband is a broad category, not one technology. Fiber, cable, DSL, and fixed wireless are separate options that use terrestrial networks to reach a home. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) lists these technologies separately from satellite on its National Broadband Map. Satellite avoids the need for a terrestrial cable running to each home, which can make it an option where wired infrastructure is absent.

Why satellite orbit matters for latency

Latency is the delay before data begins to make a round trip. Lower latency generally makes interactive activities—such as video calls, online gaming, and remote desktop work—feel more responsive. Satellite latency varies substantially by orbit: geostationary (GEO) satellites orbit much farther from Earth than low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites, so signals traveling to and from GEO satellites take longer.

The European Commission’s technology overview gives approximate figures of 600 ms for GEO and 20–40 ms for LEO, and describes GEO latency as inherently high compared with LEO (European Commission broadband technology overview). These are overview-level comparisons, not guarantees for every provider, location, or plan. LEO reduces the distance-related delay, but that does not establish that every LEO connection will respond like fiber in every circumstance.

How speeds compare—and what the figures mean

For the United States, the FCC’s 2026 report states that satellite users typically experience download speeds of 45–280 Mbps and upload speeds of 10–30 Mbps. It says satellite performance trails major fiber and cable operators in measured performance, and varies with location, time of day, and service plan (FCC 26-55). These broad reported ranges do not predict the speed a particular household will receive.

Starlink’s published specifications, retrieved October 7, 2026, give its own typical ranges as 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload, and 25–60 ms latency on land. Starlink also notes 100+ ms latency in certain remote locations, including oceans, islands, Antarctica, Alaska, and northern Canada. The company cautions that speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed and that actual speeds may be lower during high usage (Starlink specifications). These are provider-published figures, not an independent comparison; check the live specifications for current information.

Do not compare a download-speed number alone. Upload capacity matters for sending large files and video calls; latency matters for responsiveness; and performance can vary with network demand and the service plan. Published typical values are not promises about an individual address.

What to check before choosing

  1. Find the options at your address. In the United States, use the FCC guide to using the National Broadband Map to check reported providers and filter by technology or advertised speeds. Do not assume a rural location has no fiber, cable, or fixed wireless.
  2. Match latency to your activities. If you rely on video calls, gaming, or interactive cloud applications, compare the specific service’s latency and orbit where disclosed. GEO generally has higher propagation latency than LEO, but orbit class alone does not guarantee an individual connection’s performance.
  3. Check speed and demand qualifications. Treat typical speeds as ranges rather than guarantees. The FCC says satellite performance depends on location, time of day, plan, network demand, and capacity.
  4. Assess the installation location. Satellite service needs a clear line of sight. Buildings, trees, and poles can obstruct connectivity, according to the FCC report. Starlink also lists field of view, weather, installation environment, power, and active network load among factors that can affect performance.
  5. Confirm equipment and service terms. A satellite terminal and related equipment are required; the documented Starlink setup includes a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Check the provider’s current equipment costs, plan terms, data policies, and service availability directly before ordering, since these vary and are not established by the performance figures above.

When satellite is a sensible option

Satellite is worth considering when terrestrial services do not reach your address or available alternatives do not meet your needs. Where fiber, cable, DSL, or fixed wireless is available, compare the actual offers rather than choosing by technology label alone. The right choice depends on local availability, the household’s need for speed and responsiveness, installation conditions, and the provider’s current terms.
