To enable hardware acceleration for video, switch on the graphics or hardware acceleration setting in your browser, restart it, and then check whether video playback uses an accelerated path. The control is browser-specific, and turning it on does not guarantee that every video codec will use the GPU.

Enable hardware acceleration in your browser

The setting may be called “graphics acceleration” or “hardware acceleration.” Choose the instructions for your browser:

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open edge://settings/system.
  2. Turn on “Use graphics acceleration when available.”
  3. Restart Edge to apply the change.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome Settings.
  2. Go to Advanced > System. The interface may vary by browser version.
  3. Turn on “Use hardware acceleration when available.”
  4. Restart Chrome, then check whether video playback has improved.

YouTube’s green screen troubleshooting instructions point to this setting and recommend turning it off when diagnosing a green video player; for enabling acceleration, use the same control in the on position.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox Settings and select General.
  2. Under Performance, uncheck “Use recommended performance settings” to show the individual controls.
  3. Enable “Use hardware acceleration when available.”
  4. Restart Firefox.

Mozilla explains that acceleration lets Firefox use the GPU to display video, games, and animations, reducing work for the CPU. The option may be hidden if the graphics driver is incompatible. Firefox does not offer this setting on Android or iOS, and older or ESR releases may have different settings. See Firefox’s performance settings.

Check whether video is actually using hardware decoding

An enabled setting indicates that acceleration is available to the browser; it does not confirm that a particular video is being decoded by the GPU. Edge provides browser diagnostics for checking the reported path:

  1. Open edge://gpu and review the Video Acceleration Information. A Video Decode status of “Hardware accelerated” indicates an available accelerated path in that report.
  2. While the problem video is playing, open edge://media-internals and inspect its codec and decoder. Microsoft identifies D3D11VideoDecoder or MediaFoundationVideoDecoder as hardware decoding in the Windows paths described in its Edge video playback troubleshooting guide; FFmpegVideoDecoder indicates software decoding.

These diagnostics are Edge-specific. The supplied official guidance does not establish an equivalent Firefox or Chrome check that applies across versions and platforms.

If video still fails or looks wrong

Test the affected video and codec

If only one video fails, the cause may be its format or codec rather than the acceleration switch. Microsoft lists H.264, VP8, and VP9 support in Edge; HEVC support depends on the appropriate extension and decoder path, while AV1 hardware decoding depends on the device and GPU. Unsupported formats can cause video-only failure or prevent playback even when acceleration is enabled.

Check graphics-driver compatibility

An incompatible or outdated graphics driver can prevent acceleration from working as expected. YouTube recommends getting a PC graphics driver from the computer manufacturer. Mozilla also lists Windows Update, computer-maker tools, Linux distribution updates, and GPU-maker drivers as possible update routes. See Mozilla’s graphics-driver guidance.

Try turning acceleration off if it causes problems

If enabling the setting leads to flickering, high GPU temperature, or graphics-driver-related crashes, turn it off and restart the browser to test whether the symptoms stop. Mozilla lists these as situations where disabling hardware acceleration may help.

Hardware acceleration is different from video enhancement

Edge’s “Enhance video” feature is separate from the graphics-acceleration setting. Microsoft describes its availability and requirements separately in its Enhance video documentation; enabling browser acceleration does not enable that feature.
