PS5 Pro is a game-dependent upgrade, not a guarantee that every title will look or run dramatically better. In supported games, its stronger graphics hardware and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) can give developers more room to improve image quality, ray tracing, or frame rates. It is most compelling when the games you play have meaningful Pro enhancements and you have a display that can show them; otherwise, a standard PS5 may already do what you need.
What changes in games on PS5 Pro?
Sony says PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the then-current PS5, and that the system can render up to 45% faster. These are Sony’s hardware and capability claims, not measurements of a particular game’s performance. The practical difference depends on how a developer uses that extra headroom. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement outlines the hardware claims.
More options for image quality and frame rate
In a supported game, developers can use the added graphics capacity to target a sharper reconstructed image, higher or steadier frame rates, more detailed lighting and reflections, or some combination. Sony describes compatible titles as capable of offering 60 fps or up to 120 fps alongside ray tracing and PSSR-enhanced 4K output on a 4K TV. Those are capabilities, not a promise that every Pro-enhanced game offers every feature or reaches those frame rates. Check each game’s modes and requirements. PlayStation’s product page says results vary by title.
PSSR image reconstruction
PSSR uses machine learning to reconstruct or upscale a game’s image. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement says the revised technique aims to improve reconstruction precision and stability in motion; Resident Evil Requiem was identified as the first game to use it. Sony has also described an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting and lists supported games including Silent Hill f, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Monster Hunter Wilds, Alan Wake 2, Control, and Cyberpunk 2077. Availability and results are title-specific, so the setting or technique should not be assumed to apply across the whole library. Mark Cerny’s announcement of upgraded PSSR and the official feature page describe the supported features.

Which games look or run better on PS5 Pro?
Only selected PS5 games receive Pro-specific features; enhancements are not automatic for the entire library. PlayStation’s current product page advertises more than 100 enhanced PS5 games. At launch in November 2024, Sony said more than 50 games had enhancements. Those counts describe the size of the catalogue, not how large an improvement any individual game delivers. Sony’s launch catalogue announcement provides the historical count.
Before deciding, look up the Pro notes for the games you actually play, then compare their available modes. Focus on what changes in image reconstruction or clarity, frame rate and stability, and ray tracing or other effects. A mode that improves one quality may make a different trade-off, so the best choice depends on whether you value smoothness or visual detail more. The cited official descriptions establish feature availability, but do not provide a controlled independent, game-by-game benchmark set; precise performance gains for individual titles should not be inferred from the catalogue count.

PS5 Pro also plays more than 8,500 PS4 titles, according to PlayStation. Sony says Game Boost can improve frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games. “Some” matters: this is not a guarantee that every backwards-compatible game performs better. PlayStation’s product page describes the compatibility and Game Boost features.
PS5 Pro vs. standard PS5: the practical differences
| What to compare | PS5 Pro | Standard PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Supported-game visuals and performance | Selected games offer Pro enhancements; the feature and result vary by title. | Standard PS5 experience; Pro-specific enhancements are not available. |
| Image reconstruction | Supports PSSR in compatible games; an upgraded version and optional image-quality setting apply to supported titles. | Does not use PS5 Pro’s PSSR features. |
| GPU and memory claims | Sony says it has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5; Sony claims up to 45% faster rendering. | Baseline for Sony’s stated comparison. Figures are Sony claims, not independent game benchmarks. |
| Storage and disc configuration | Sony’s product page lists 2TB storage. The console is disc-less; a Disc Drive is sold separately. | Configuration depends on the standard PS5 model being compared; check the model’s current specifications and price. |
| Display considerations | A compatible 4K TV is needed to view 4K output; high-refresh benefits also depend on a suitable display and supported game mode. | Benefits likewise depend on the display and the game’s supported output. |
The hardware figures and original console configuration come from Sony’s September 2024 announcement; storage, display feature descriptions, and title caveats are on the current product page. Standard PS5 specifications vary by model, so compare the exact console rather than treating every standard PS5 configuration as identical.

What does the upgrade cost?
Sony announced a US launch MSRP of $699.99 on September 10, 2024. That is a historical launch price, not a current price quote. Check local prices for the console, bundles, and accessories before buying. PS5 Pro launched as a disc-less console with 2TB storage; if you need to use physical game discs, include the separately sold Disc Drive in your total. Sony’s launch announcement specifies the launch MSRP and disc configuration.
For an existing owner, calculate the net upgrade cost after deciding whether to keep, sell, or trade in the current PS5. For a new console buyer, compare the current total price of both models, including any drive or bundle you need. PS5 Pro also supports Wi-Fi 7 and has 2TB storage, but Wi-Fi benefits require a compatible network and storage value depends on your game library; neither feature alone improves game visuals or frame rates. PlayStation’s product page lists these specifications.
Is PS5 Pro worth it if you already own a PS5?
Consider upgrading if
- Your most-played games have Pro modes that improve qualities you notice, such as image clarity, ray tracing, or frame-rate stability.
- You use a display suited to the resolution or refresh-rate gains you want.
- The visible or playable improvements are worth the current total cost to you, including a Disc Drive if needed.
Keep your standard PS5 if
- You are satisfied with its performance and image quality.
- Your regular games have little or no Pro-specific improvement that matters to you.
- You would need to spend extra on a display or accessory to get the benefits you want, and that additional cost makes the upgrade unattractive.
If you are buying your first PS5
Compare current local prices and the specific games and display you plan to use. The Pro’s advantages depend on supported software and suitable display features; the standard PS5 remains the baseline experience. Sony’s product page lists the current enhanced-game catalogue, but the actual value is determined by the titles you play and their available modes.
