Local payment methods can be safe for buying games online, but availability does not guarantee a refund or a way to reverse a fraudulent payment. Judge each option separately for who sees your payment details, how you can dispute a charge, how much money is at risk, and whether funds are locked to one store. When you do not specify a country or platform, the safest general approach is to buy through the official game or console store, check its refund rules and the payment provider’s terms, and avoid paying unfamiliar sellers by direct bank transfer.
What “safe” means for an online game payment
A payment method can protect one part of a purchase while leaving another exposed. A digital wallet, for example, may keep a seller from seeing your underlying card or bank credentials, but it does not guarantee that you can recover money if a game is not delivered or a transaction is disputed. A platform wallet may limit what you have exposed to a gaming account, while locking that balance to the platform.

Compare options across these distinct questions:
- Credential exposure: Does the merchant receive your card or bank details, or does a wallet mediate the payment?
- Dispute and refund route: Can you challenge a charge through the bank, payment provider, or store, and what terms or local laws apply?
- Loss limit: Can you cap spending with a prepaid balance, card controls, or purchase authentication?
- Restrictions: Can you get the money back or transfer it, and is it limited by platform, country, or currency?
- Account risk: Could someone who takes over your gaming account spend stored funds or saved payment methods?
How common payment options compare
| Payment option | Potential advantage | Key limitation to check |
|---|---|---|
| Credit or debit card | May offer a route to challenge a payment through the card issuer. | Protection depends on the country, card, transaction, and applicable rules. Avoid saving the card on a gaming account if you do not need to. |
| Digital wallet | May keep the seller from receiving your underlying funding credentials. | Credential privacy is not a promise that every game transaction qualifies for buyer protection. Check the wallet’s terms. |
| Local bank transfer, cash, carrier billing, or voucher method | May be convenient or avoid entering card details directly. | Local availability does not establish that a payment is refundable or reversible. Terms can differ by merchant and payment type. |
| Prepaid bank card or platform gift card | Can limit the amount exposed and avoid storing a primary bank card on the gaming account. | Balance may be platform-locked or restricted by country, currency, or redemption rules. |
| Platform wallet | A set balance can help set a spending boundary. | Funds may be non-refundable, non-transferable, and usable only within that platform’s ecosystem. |
These are trade-offs, not a universal ranking. The best fit depends on your country, the store, and the terms for the specific payment method.
What country-specific guidance says about cards and wallets
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises using a credit card for online shopping where possible. It says credit cards often provide protection under the UK Consumer Credit Act, while debit-card payments offer less protection but may qualify for chargeback. These are UK-specific points, not a statement of the rules in every country. The NCSC also advises shoppers to check the terms of digital-wallet services such as PayPal, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. PayPal’s UK service description says that a seller need not receive the buyer’s underlying funding credentials when the buyer pays through the service. That describes credential sharing; it does not mean every game purchase is covered by a successful dispute or refund. PayPal UK safety and security
Why the official store and seller matter
A familiar payment logo is not enough to establish that a purchase is safe. Start at the official game or console store rather than following a payment request from an unfamiliar seller. Check the store’s refund terms before paying, and read the relevant payment provider’s dispute terms as well. A store’s refund policy and a provider’s dispute process are separate routes; neither should be treated as a guaranteed refund.

The UK NCSC’s safe-shopping guidance puts the risk of direct transfers plainly: “Never pay by direct bank transfer.” The warning is especially relevant when an unfamiliar or potentially fraudulent seller asks you to transfer money outside an official checkout, where recovery options may be limited. Local methods may be non-refundable for a particular store
Payment rails that are common or convenient in one region can still have limited refund options at a particular game publisher. EA’s help page lists methods including Boleto Bancario, MyCard, Online Banking TH / MOLPay, Yandex, Paysafecard, Ukash, CashU, InComm Card, Coda Payments, Midasbuy, Xsolla, and Devco among methods it treats as non-refundable for EA purchases. This describes EA’s purchase policy, not a universal rule for those methods at other merchants. Check the specific store’s current policy before you pay. EA returns and cancellations

When prepaid cards or platform balances make sense
A prepaid Visa or Mastercard, or a gift card for a platform such as Steam or Nintendo eShop, can help avoid saving a primary bank card on a gaming account and cap the amount available to spend. Australia’s cyber.gov.au recommends considering these options when payment details must be saved. Before buying, verify the card’s country and currency, whether it is from an authorized seller, and the platform’s region and redemption rules. A prepaid balance is a spending boundary, not a guarantee that money can be refunded. cyber.gov.au gaming-account security advice cyber.gov.au advice on protecting gaming accounts
Platform wallets can impose a similar boundary but tie funds to an ecosystem. For example, the US PlayStation terms say wallet funds can be added using a credit or debit card, prepaid card, code, or other locally available approved method. They are generally non-refundable and non-transferable except where required by law, and can be used only on PlayStation Store or certain third-party services. Those terms are specific to PlayStation in the United States; check the terms for your own country and platform. PlayStation Network Terms of Service (US)

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Secure the account that holds your games and payment methods
Even a payment method with a limited balance can be misused if someone takes over the gaming account. The Australian government’s cyber.gov.au guidance recommends protecting gaming accounts with a unique passphrase and multifactor authentication (MFA), using purchase authentication, avoiding saved payment details where practical, and buying from official platforms. A password manager can help create and store unique passphrases, but it does not add refund rights. cyber.gov.au gaming-account security advice
Unauthorized purchases are a real account-security concern: the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) reported hacking attempts, account theft, scams, and unauthorized transactions in gaming marketplaces, and noted that game operators may not provide protections associated with traditional banking systems. In its 2024 report, the CFPB relayed a study of 10,000 gamers globally in which 63 percent of respondents felt their accounts were not safe enough from attacks and one in three reported that their account had been hacked in the previous two years. The figure is reported secondhand by the CFPB, not presented as a CFPB-conducted study. CFPB report on banking in video games and virtual worlds

Quick Recap
A practical check before you pay
- Open the official store yourself. Use the game or console platform’s official checkout, not a payment link sent by an unfamiliar seller.
- Read the store’s refund rules. Confirm what applies to the game, region, and payment type you intend to use.
- Check the payment provider’s terms. Look for the available dispute route and any limits; do not assume a wallet or local method guarantees recovery.
- Choose a sensible exposure limit. Consider a prepaid card or platform gift card if you want to avoid saving a primary card or cap available spending, while checking redemption restrictions first.
- Secure the account. Use a unique passphrase and MFA, enable purchase authentication, and remove stored payment details if you do not need them.
