Safari’s built-in Block Pop-ups setting stops pop-up windows on iPhone and iPad, while Mac Safari lets you set pop-up behavior and enable content blockers by site. These controls do different jobs: blocking pop-ups does not remove every ad embedded in a webpage. For broader page-content filtering, use a content blocker on Mac or a Safari extension on iPhone.
What Safari’s ad controls do
Safari has separate tools for different kinds of unwanted activity. A pop-up preference blocks pop-up windows; content blockers can prevent ads and other unwanted content from appearing on a site; cross-site tracking prevention limits certain tracking data; and Distraction Control hides selected items visually. Choosing the right tool depends on what you want to stop and which Apple device you use.

Block pop-ups on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Turn on Block Pop-ups.
Apple lists Fraudulent Website Warning on the same screen, but that is a separate security warning setting, not an ad filter. Apple’s instructions for blocking pop-up ads and windows describe this setting.
Block pop-ups and page content on Mac
Choose pop-up behavior
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings > Websites.
- Select Pop-up Windows in the sidebar.
- Set the behavior for a listed website or choose the default behavior for other websites.
Some sites rely on pop-up windows for legitimate features. If a site stops working, you can set an exception for that site rather than changing the behavior everywhere. Apple documents these choices in its Safari guide to blocking pop-ups.

Enable content blockers for a site
In Safari > Settings > Websites, select Content Blockers in the sidebar and configure the setting for the relevant website. Apple says turning this on stops ads and other unwanted content from appearing on that site. This is separate from the Pop-up Windows setting, and Apple’s guidance does not promise that it removes every ad across the web. See Apple’s Safari guide for the Websites controls.
Use a Safari extension on iPhone
If you want a tool that blocks webpage content rather than just pop-up windows, Apple supports Safari extensions on iPhone. You can browse extensions from Safari and enable one in Settings:

- In Safari, tap Page Menu > Manage Extensions to browse App Store extensions.
- To enable an installed extension, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions.
- Select the extension and turn on Allow Extension. You may also be able to manage its access for an individual site.
Extensions differ in what they block and what permissions they request. Review what an extension does before enabling it. Apple explains the setup in its iPhone guide to getting Safari extensions.
Understand tracking protection and Distraction Control
Prevent cross-site tracking on Mac
Find Prevent cross-site tracking under Safari > Settings > Privacy. Apple says third-party cookies and website data are deleted unless you visit and interact with that provider as a first-party website. This is a privacy feature, not a promise that visible ads will disappear. See Apple’s Safari privacy guidance.

Hide selected items with Distraction Control
Distraction Control is available on iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 or later, and on Mac with macOS Sequoia or later. It can hide selected webpage items, but Apple says it works best for items that do not change regularly and does not permanently hide frequently updated ads. On Mac, a content-blocking extension may work best when Content Blockers are enabled for the site. Apple describes the feature in its Distraction Control guide.
Stay safe when a pop-up appears
- Do not click suspicious alerts, download offers, or close buttons that imitate trusted companies. Some pop-ups try to obtain personal or financial information.
- If a pop-up is taking over a page, enter a new URL or search term in Safari’s Search field instead of interacting with it.
- On Mac, quit Safari and reopen it while holding Shift to prevent previously open windows or tabs from reopening.
- Do not confuse a request for site notifications with an ad-blocking prompt. Apple notes that a site designed to send notifications about new or updated content asks for permission.

Troubleshoot unwanted pop-ups on Mac
If pop-ups continue after you configure Safari, unwanted software or adware may be involved. Apple recommends these checks:
- Update macOS and restart your Mac.
- Look in Applications for apps you do not recognize or remember installing.
- Review Safari extensions and remove ones you do not recognize or need.
- If unwanted advertising or programs continue, contact Apple.
