Before buying a used Sigma fp or fp L, confirm which model it is, test every control and recording function, inspect sample files for sensor marks, and try the electronic shutter in the conditions you expect to shoot. Check the battery, included accessories, ports, and mount in person; neither the camera’s appearance nor its advertised dust and splash resistance proves that an individual used body is in good condition.

Identify the model and make sure it fits your needs

The two bodies look similar, but their resolution differs substantially. Sigma specifies approximately 24.6 effective megapixels for the fp and approximately 61 megapixels for the fp L. The higher-resolution fp L may suit detailed stills and cropping; weigh that against larger files, storage needs, and processing workload. Check the camera’s information display, seller documentation, and recorded image dimensions rather than relying on appearance alone. Sigma’s fp L specifications and fp features identify the models.

Both use L-Mount. Sigma says compatible lenses come from the Sigma, Leica, and Panasonic L-Mount ecosystem. The optional Sigma MC-21 can adapt Sigma SA and Canon EF lenses, but confirm compatibility and firmware requirements for the exact lens and adapter before purchase. Sigma’s fp L product information and the fp L manual describe the system.

If you plan to use the camera for video, Sigma describes 12-bit CinemaDNG recording and RAW output over HDMI. Test the HDMI connection, recorder, media, power source, and recording settings you intend to use; an output specification alone does not confirm that a particular used body or rig will meet your workflow.

Inspect the body and controls

Look for cracks, impact damage, bent or loose parts, corrosion, residue, and signs of liquid exposure. Check the lens mount and contacts, tripod socket, battery/card door and latch, port covers, and screen edges. The fp L has a fixed rear screen, so inspect its full surface and test touch response across the display. RTINGS’ fp L review describes the physical layout.

Operate every button and dial several times, paying close attention to the rear control dial on the original fp. An owner discussion reports unreliable rear-dial behavior on some original fp bodies and mentions a Sigma service upgrade, but it gives no failure rate and does not establish current service availability or warranty coverage. Treat it as a reason to test the control directly, not as proof of a widespread defect. If the seller says the dial was serviced, ask for documentation. The owner discussion is anecdotal.

Test the display, controls, and file recording

  1. Power on with a known-good battery. Check the LCD for cracks, pressure marks, uneven brightness, touch dead zones, and distracting stuck or dead pixels. Sigma’s manual notes that a small number of LCD pixels may remain lit or unlit as a normal characteristic and will not affect recorded images. Confirm whether a visible mark appears only on the display or also in captured files.

  2. Insert an SD, SDHC, or SDXC card. If appropriate, format it in-camera, then capture several stills and review them. Confirm that the card is recognized, files write without errors, playback works, menus respond, and the camera enters both still and cine operation. Sigma states that a memory card was not included with the fp L when new. The fp L Firmware 3.0 manual lists the supported card families and package contents.

  3. If video matters, record a clip long enough to exercise your expected setup and inspect the resulting file on another device. Test the actual ports and external recorder you plan to use rather than assuming that a brief menu check verifies the complete workflow.

Check sample images for sensor-area marks and bright points

  1. Fit a lens and photograph a uniformly bright, plain surface at a small aperture. Inspect the file at 100% for persistent dust marks.

  2. Make a dark or longer-exposure test and inspect for bright points. A bright point in a file is different from a stuck pixel visible only on the LCD.

  3. If a test suggests contamination, do not scrape or touch the sensor protection glass during an informal inspection. The fp L Firmware 3.0 manual documents Pixel Refresh and says a blower can be used to clean the protection glass. It warns against aerosol air cleaners and brush blowers, and recommends contacting a service station for stubborn dust or stains. Let a qualified technician assess anything that does not clear safely.

    • Worlds lightest and smallest pocketable full frame camera
    • Package Dimensions: 26.009 H x 17.399 L x 21.488 W (centimeters)

An owner discussion suggests dust can accumulate on the protection glass, but that is user-reported rather than a quantified model-wide problem. Judge the particular camera by its files and, if necessary, a technician’s assessment. The owner discussion and Sigma’s manual provide the respective anecdotal and manufacturer guidance.

Evaluate the electronic shutter for your shooting

Neither camera has a mechanical shutter. Sigma’s fp L Firmware 3.0 manual states, “This product is not equipped with a mechanical shutter mechanism.” The manual warns that flickering light sources such as fluorescent lighting can cause uneven exposure, and that fast-moving subjects can appear distorted.

If you expect to shoot under LEDs, fluorescent lights, or other flickering sources, take test frames at likely shutter speeds and inspect for bands or uneven brightness. For sports, fast pans, or other moving subjects, test the motion you actually need to capture. These are characteristics to assess against your use, not evidence on their own that a used body is faulty.

Sigma lists maximum flash sync at 1/15 second, falling to 1/10 second or slower with 14-bit DNG or DNG+JPEG settings. If flash is part of your setup, confirm that this limit works for your lighting and exposure plans. The fp L Firmware 3.0 manual (2023) gives the shutter warnings and sync figures.

Verify the battery and included accessories

Ask the seller exactly what is included, then test anything you need. Sigma’s fp L manual lists the BP-51 battery, charger/adapter, USB cable, body cap, strap pieces, and HU-11 hot shoe unit among standard package contents. A used listing may omit any of them, regional adapter details can vary, and the original package did not include a memory card.

  • Battery and charging: Charge the battery, check the camera’s battery indication, and test USB charging or power in the setup you intend to use. An aging battery may not perform reliably just because it is included.

  • HU-11 hot shoe unit: If you need the camera’s supported external-flash connection, confirm that the HU-11 is present and fits securely. Sigma says the external flash connection is available when the HU-11 is mounted.

  • Card and lens: Bring a compatible SD-family card for testing. If you do not already own an L-Mount lens, factor in the lens or a suitable, verified adapter needed to use the camera.

Do not treat weather resistance as waterproofing

Sigma describes sealing at 42 points on the fp series as dust- and splash-resistant construction, but explicitly says the camera is not waterproof. RTINGS says it did not independently test the advertised sealing. A used body’s cosmetic condition does not prove its moisture history or guarantee that its seals remain effective. Ask about exposure and inspect doors, seams, and ports for residue or corrosion; do not assume an individual used camera is safe to use in rain. Sigma’s fp features page states the sealing caveat, and RTINGS’ review describes the limits of its assessment.

Compare two listings on the same points

What to compare What to check
Resolution and file workload fp: approximately 24.6 effective megapixels; fp L: approximately 61 effective megapixels. Consider detail and crop needs alongside storage and processing.
Condition and controls Test every control on both bodies; give the original fp’s rear dial direct attention because of anecdotal owner reports, not a documented failure rate.
Shutter use Both use electronic shutters. Test likely flicker, motion, and flash-sync scenarios against your actual use.
Included equipment Verify the BP-51, HU-11 if needed, charging gear, card, lens, and any adapter rather than assuming a new-camera package is intact.
Video workflow Try the ports, media, power, and external recorder setup you expect to use.

The specifications and package details above come from Sigma’s fp L product information, Sigma’s fp features page, and Sigma’s fp L Firmware 3.0 manual.
