AI reading apps can use your history to sync your place, organize or recommend reading, and provide context for optional AI features. What they collect—and what they send to an AI provider—varies by service and feature. A reading app’s own storage and a separate AI provider’s processing are two different privacy questions.
What counts as reading history?
It can include much more than a list of books. Depending on the service, it may record what you read, where you stopped, how long you read, and what you marked or said about a title. The following are examples from named services, not a standard inventory for every app.
- Readwise: Its privacy policy lists book and article titles, metadata, tags, highlights, annotations, online activity, and tokens used to connect third-party services. Data may come from services such as Kindle, Apple Books, Pocket, websites, PDFs, and EPUBs. Readwise privacy policy
- Bookwise: Its policy lists shelves, ratings, reviews and notes, reading sessions, page progress, reading duration, goals, and wishlist entries. Bookwise privacy policy
Collection does not by itself tell you why a particular item is used. A progress record might support syncing, while a highlight could be stored for later review or included as context in an AI response. Check the policy for the feature you use, rather than assuming every app handles every field the same way.
Does the app send reading data to an AI provider?
Sometimes. The app may store a broader reading history, then send selected context to an outside provider when you use an AI feature. Which fields are shared depends on the service.

Bookwise and Anthropic
Bookwise says it does not send data to Anthropic until the user enables its AI feature. When enabled, it says the information sent can include prompts, recent conversation history, book information, ratings, progress, shelves, and genre context. Bookwise says it does not send the user’s email address, name, or payment details to Anthropic, and says it does not use the data sent for advertising. Its policy also says the data sent through its Anthropic API is not used to train models under the API terms. Bookwise privacy policy
Readwise and Reader
Readwise says its AI features use OpenAI. Its privacy and security FAQ says it has opted out of OpenAI API content being used for training and that content received through the API is not allowed to be saved to OpenAI’s servers. Those are Readwise’s statements about its own API use; they do not establish how other apps or AI products handle prompts. Readwise privacy and security FAQ

Readwise and Reader also differ in purpose: Readwise organizes and resurfaces highlights, while Reader is a read-it-later app. Readwise says highlights and notes made in Reader sync to Readwise. Its documentation explains that externally purchased Kindle or Apple Books titles cannot be imported in full into Reader for copyright reasons, and highlights made on the original platform may not remain attached to an EPUB uploaded to Reader. Does “not used for training” mean the data is private?
No. A training-use statement addresses one use of data; it does not mean that data never leaves the app, that it is not processed to answer a prompt, or that only you can access stored content. Readwise says its products do not offer end-to-end encryption. Its privacy assurances should not be read as a claim that stored content is technically inaccessible to the service. Training and retention claims are also specific to the service, provider, and terms cited. Neither is a general promise for other products or for data you send directly to an AI service yourself.
What happens when you turn off sync?
AI controls and sync controls can have different effects. Amazon’s UK Kindle support page says sync is enabled by default and saves reading position, notes, and highlights to Amazon’s servers. Turning sync off can remove cross-device position and note features, including Export/Share for notes; notes, highlights, or bookmarks made while sync is off may be lost when sync is turned back on. Kindle Web continues saving data to Amazon’s servers even when sync is off, although that data does not sync to other devices and apps. Amazon Kindle sync settings

- Easy to Carry Size: Measuring about 5.5 x 8.3 inches, this notebook offers a good balance between writing space and portability. It fits easily into most bags, backpacks, or totes, making it convenient for daily use or travel.
- Hardcover Design: The sturdy cover helps protect the pages inside and keeps the notebook looking neat with regular use. Its simple appearance suits both work and casual settings.
- Gift-Friendly Choice: A useful option for occasions like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduations, or office use. Suitable for friends, coworkers, or family members who enjoy writing, planning, or staying organized.
- Smooth Lined Pages: The lined pages provide a clean structure for writing and feel comfortable with pens or pencils. Works well for notes, journaling, to-do lists, or light sketches.
- Spiral Binding for Flexibility: The spiral binding allows the notebook to lay flat or fold back on itself, making it easier to write in different situations, whether at a desk or on the go.
- What is collected? Look for titles, progress, session timing, highlights, notes, ratings, activity records, and connected-service permissions or tokens.
- What is each item used for? Separate syncing and library organization from recommendations, analytics, social features, and AI responses.
- What goes to an AI provider? Check the provider’s name, the fields sent, whether the feature is optional, and whether it can be disabled. A statement about the app’s own storage is not a complete answer about provider transfers.
- What do the training, retention, and deletion terms say? Identify which provider, API, feature, and data the wording covers. Look for export and deletion controls rather than inferring them from a training statement.
- What changes when you switch something off? Read the consequences for sync, notes, highlights, and access across devices before changing settings.
- What is the security model? Check whether the service offers end-to-end encryption. Cloud storage, an AI-provider transfer, and encryption are separate issues.
Policies and settings can change. Recheck the current terms and the in-app controls when enabling a feature or uploading sensitive documents.
