For a new Nintendo system in the U.S., choose Nintendo Switch 2 if you want the current hardware and Switch 2 games; choose the Switch OLED Model for a lower-priced OLED handheld that also connects to a TV; choose the standard Switch for the lowest listed price among models with all three play modes; or choose Switch Lite if you want a handheld-only system and its game limits suit you. Nintendo lists U.S. system MSRPs of $499.99, $399.99, $339.99, and $229.99, respectively. These recommendations follow Nintendo’s published features and prices, not independent comparative testing.

How the four Nintendo Switch models differ

Nintendo’s current buying decision spans four systems: Switch 2, Switch OLED Model, standard Switch, and Switch Lite. The first three support handheld, tabletop, and TV play; Lite is handheld-only. Switch 2 is the current-generation option, while the other three are part of Nintendo’s original Switch family.

Model U.S. listed MSRP Play modes Built-in screen Internal storage Nintendo battery estimate
Nintendo Switch 2 $499.99, effective September 1, 2026 (Nintendo) Handheld, tabletop, TV 7.9-inch LCD, 1920 × 1080, HDR10, VRR up to 120 Hz 256 GB Approximately 2–6.5 hours
Switch OLED Model $399.99 (Nintendo) Handheld, tabletop, TV 7.0-inch OLED, 1280 × 720 64 GB Approximately 4.5–9 hours
Standard Switch $339.99 (Nintendo) Handheld, tabletop, TV 6.2-inch LCD, 1280 × 720 32 GB Approximately 4.5–9 hours
Switch Lite $229.99 (Nintendo) Handheld only 5.5-inch LCD, 1280 × 720 32 GB Approximately 3–7 hours

Prices are Nintendo’s listed U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail prices, not guaranteed retailer prices or stock. Bundle prices and contents can differ; check Nintendo’s current Switch 2 page for live details. Nintendo’s Switch-family product page and comparison page list the legacy models.

Which model should you buy?

Buy Switch 2 for the newest hardware and Switch 2 games

Switch 2 is the straightforward choice if you want access to Switch 2 software and the newer system’s larger, higher-resolution built-in display. It has a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD, 256 GB of storage, and supports all three play modes. In TV mode, Nintendo lists output up to 4K at 60 fps with a compatible TV and game, as well as 120 fps at selected lower resolutions. That 4K capability is docked output, not the resolution of the handheld screen. The trade-offs are the highest listed system MSRP and the shortest stated battery range in Nintendo’s estimates.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Buy Switch OLED for an OLED screen and lower cost than Switch 2

The OLED Model suits players who expect to use the console often in handheld or tabletop mode and prefer an OLED display. Its 7-inch screen is larger than the standard Switch’s and Lite’s, and it retains TV play through its dock. Nintendo also specifies enhanced handheld and tabletop audio and a dock with wired LAN. It costs less than Switch 2 at the listed U.S. MSRPs, but it is an original Switch-family system rather than the option for Switch 2 games.

Buy standard Switch to save while keeping TV, tabletop, and handheld play

The standard Switch offers the same three play modes as the OLED Model for a lower listed MSRP. Its 6.2-inch LCD and 32 GB internal storage are smaller than the OLED model’s display and storage. It is a reasonable fit when flexibility matters more than an OLED screen or extra built-in storage.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

Buy Switch Lite for handheld-only use

Lite is the least expensive listed system and the smallest-screen option. It cannot connect to a TV through a dock, and Nintendo says it plays games that support handheld mode. If a particular game is important, confirm handheld-mode support before buying. Some games that do not support handheld mode may be playable with separate compatible controllers; that can also mean arranging a way to charge those controllers.

Battery life, portability, and display trade-offs

Nintendo’s battery figures are estimates, not guarantees or results from a common head-to-head test. Actual life varies with the game. For example, Nintendo gives roughly 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on both Switch OLED and standard Switch, and about 4 hours on Lite. Switch 2’s separately stated estimate is approximately 2–6.5 hours, also depending on the game. See Nintendo’s Switch comparison and Switch 2 specifications.

Nintendo Switch Game Console - Black (HAC-001(-01) w/Blue & Red Joycon (Renewed)
  • Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
  • This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
  • The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
  • Model number HAC 001( 01)

The screen distinction is simple: Switch 2 has the largest display and highest handheld resolution, OLED has an OLED panel, and standard Switch and Lite use LCD screens. For TV play, the three original Switch models output through a dock; Lite is designed for handheld play. These differences matter more than assuming a larger number or newer model is automatically the best fit for every player.

Game compatibility and storage to check before purchase

Switch 2 and original Switch games

Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible because of hardware differences. If you are upgrading with a specific game collection in mind, consult Nintendo’s live Switch 2 game compatibility information title by title. Compatibility with original Switch games does not mean every game works perfectly, nor does it make Switch 2 games playable on the older systems.

  • 6.2” LCD screen.
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld

Switch Lite compatibility

Lite’s handheld-only design means its compatibility depends on whether a game supports handheld mode. Check Nintendo’s game information for titles that require TV or tabletop play, or need detachable controllers.

Switch 2 storage expansion

Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage and supports game-storage expansion with microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. A conventional microSD card cannot expand Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo says conventional microSD cards can be used to view or copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch. Check the Switch 2 specifications and compatibility details before buying a card.

Accessories, online play, and the cost beyond the console

Do not assume original Switch accessories carry over unchanged to Switch 2. Nintendo says the original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to Switch 2; charging requires a Switch console or compatible charging accessory. The original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly and charge through a USB port on the Switch 2 dock. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a particular accessory or use case.

Nintendo’s Switch-family page says online features require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately and subject to terms and availability. Treat any membership cost as separate from the console’s hardware price.
