For most stills and general hybrid use, the Sony a7C II is the more straightforward choice: it combines 33-megapixel stills, phase-detection autofocus with subject recognition, and internal 4K recording. Choose the Sigma fp if a smaller, lighter body or an external raw-video workflow matters more than tracking autofocus and a conventional all-in-one setup. These recommendations follow manufacturer specifications, not a side-by-side camera test.

How the Sigma fp and Sony a7C II compare

Both are compact full-frame interchangeable-lens cameras, but they belong to different lens systems and lean toward different kinds of use. The fp prioritizes a minimal body and options for building an external recording setup; the a7C II offers a broader conventional stills-and-video feature set in the body. Specifications below are from Sigma and Sony.

Feature Sigma fp Sony a7C II What it means
Sensor and still resolution 35 mm full-frame; approximately 24.6 effective megapixels (Sigma specifications) 35 mm full-frame; approximately 33.0 effective megapixels for still images (Sony specifications) The Sony records more pixels by specification; resolution alone does not establish overall image quality.
Body dimensions 112.6 × 69.9 × 45.3 mm (Sigma specifications) 124.0 × 71.1 × 63.4 mm (Sony specifications) The fp is smaller in the listed body dimensions.
Weight 370 g body-only; 422 g with battery and SD card (Sigma specifications) 429 g body-only; 514 g with battery and memory card (Sony specifications) The fp is lighter on either stated basis. These figures describe bodies, not a complete shooting kit with lens or accessories.
Autofocus Contrast autofocus (Sigma product page) Phase-detection autofocus; listed recognition targets include people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and airplanes (Sony specifications) The Sony’s listed system looks better suited to tracking moving subjects, but the specifications are not a comparative hit-rate test.
Lens mount L-Mount; Sigma says lenses from other L-Mount Alliance manufacturers may be used (Sigma product page) Sony E-mount (Sony specifications) Existing compatible lenses can make one system substantially more convenient and economical for you.
Video formats and workflow Sigma documents external 12-bit CinemaDNG recording and Blackmagic RAW or ProRes RAW output over HDMI; the raw workflow it describes is 4K UHD/24fps (Sigma product page) Internal XAVC S, XAVC S-I, and XAVC HS recording; 4K 60/50p is limited to Super 35mm mode (Sony specifications; Sony product page) Sigma’s cited strength is an external raw/cinema workflow; Sony lists a range of internal recording formats.
Recording media SD/SDHC/SDXC cards and portable SSD are listed (Sigma product page) SD UHS-I/II card slot (Sony specifications) Check the media requirements of the formats you intend to record, along with their cost and whether an external drive suits your setup.
Power and stated endurance BP-51 battery; Sigma lists approximately 280 stills and 70 minutes of continuous recording, and says the camera cannot be used while charging (Sigma specifications) NP-FZ100 battery; Sony specifies USB-C charging/power supply and approximately 100 minutes actual movie battery life using the viewfinder or 105 minutes using the LCD (Sony specifications) Manufacturers’ figures use different stated measures and conditions, so they are not directly comparable endurance tests.

Which camera fits your priorities?

Choose the Sony a7C II for stills and general hybrid shooting

The a7C II is the more straightforward specification-based choice if you photograph people, wildlife, sports, or other moving subjects and want subject recognition built into the camera. Its 33.0-megapixel still specification and internal video formats also suit a general-purpose kit without making an external recorder central to the workflow. For 4K 60p, note Sony’s Super 35mm mode restriction.

Choose the Sigma fp for the smallest body or an external cinema setup

The fp makes sense when minimizing body size and weight is the priority, or when its documented external recording options fit a deliberate cinema workflow. Sigma also lists portable SSD support and USB webcam use. It is a less obvious pick if dependable subject tracking is central to your photography; its official page identifies contrast autofocus rather than the Sony’s phase-detection system.

Let your lenses decide when you already own a system

The fp uses L-Mount, and Sigma identifies the L-Mount Alliance as including Sigma, Leica Camera AG, and Panasonic Corporation. The a7C II uses Sony E-mount. If you already have compatible lenses, staying with that mount may matter more to your total kit cost and convenience than the body specifications alone.

Think about the whole kit, not just the body

The fp’s compact body does not tell you how small or simple your finished setup will be once you add a lens or accessories. Sigma lists optional grips and viewfinders, and offers a body-and-lens kit with the 45mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary. The Sony store listing cited here is for a body-only configuration. Before comparing totals, check the exact kit contents, lens mount, media needs, and any accessories required for your intended workflow.

For a US price reference only, Sony’s US store page displayed the body-only a7C II at $2,099.99, with $2,499.99 crossed out, when accessed on October 7, 2026. That is a dated, potentially temporary listing, not a market-wide or durable price. No comparable current Sigma fp retail price or inventory was verified.

What the specifications do not settle

These manufacturer-published figures do not establish which camera produces better images overall, has a higher real-world autofocus hit rate, handles rolling shutter better, or is less prone to overheating under matched conditions. Nor do body dimensions and weight predict the comfort of a complete lens-and-accessory setup. Treat the autofocus and buyer-fit recommendations as inferences from listed features, not independent comparative test results.
