Sometimes—but the evidence does not show that focus apps reliably raise everyone’s overall productivity. Blocking distracting apps or websites can help some people stay on task, and a few studies report improvements in measured attention or task-specific focus. Those outcomes are not the same as producing more or better work over time.

What does it mean for a focus app to “work”?

Focus tools can change the conditions in which you work: they may block distractions, prompt you to return to a task, or show how you spend time. Whether that helps depends on the intervention, the person, and the outcome being measured.

Studies in this area assess different things, including self-reported productivity, use of distracting apps, sustained attention, and behavioral focus during a particular task. None of those measures should automatically be treated as proof of durable, objectively measured work output.

What studies have found

Blocking can help some distracted workers

A 2017 in-situ field study by Gloria Mark, Shamsi Iqbal, and Mary Czerwinski followed 32 information workers. Participants spent five workdays in a baseline condition and five with online distractions blocked. During blocking, they rated their productivity significantly higher and reported being able to focus longer. People who were most distracted by social media benefited most. The productivity result was self-assessed, and the short study does not establish a general increase in objective work output. Read the study summary from Microsoft Research.

We have preset 5, 25 minutes for you, you don’t have to set it every time by yourself. Other similar cube timers in the market are not real 5/25 timers as they don’t have preset 5, 25 minutes.
  • Rotating Productivity Timer with Gra vity Sensor. We have preset 5, 25, 10, 50 minutes for gra vity sensing mode. You only need to flip the timer to the preset number with facing upwards, and then it will automatically start to countdown. Flip the timer screen facing upwards to stop the timing; Flip the timer screen facing downwards to reset it to zero.
  • Support Custom Modes. You can also adjust this digital timer to other values that you want as it supports 00-99 minutes and 59 seconds timing. You can also adjust it to countdown mode or stopwatch mode.
  • 3 Volume Levels: Silent/High Volume/Low Volume. In silent mode, the vibration is noticeable at your desk without disturbing others nearby. High volume: 90-100dB; Low volume: 70-80dB.
  • Great for Work, School, Office, Kitchen. This cube timer with stylish and aesthetic design is a great present for students, friends, or coworkers, and families, people with ADHD, using it for work/ office, back to school & off to college/ classroom/study, workout, kitchen, etc.

The researchers also identified a possible downside for some participants with less self-control: they worked longer without breaks and experienced higher stress. A blocker that removes interruptions can also remove a cue to pause.

Passive usage charts have weaker support

A 2021 systematic review examined 28 digital self-control interventions, including usage awareness, goal setting, blocking, feature changes, and rewards or penalties. It found that interventions varied in effectiveness and that usage visualizations on their own did not reduce distracting-media use. Approaches that paired prompts or goals with blocking sometimes performed better. The review cautioned that the studies were often small and short, with unclear contexts and mixed features, leaving low confidence in overall results and making it difficult to identify the effect of any one feature. Timed blocking is not proof that every Pomodoro method works

The 2021 review describes PomodoLock, a software intervention that blocked distracting apps and websites for 25-minute intervals on smartphones and PCs. That is evidence about a timed software-blocking approach. It does not establish that every Pomodoro app—or a physical timer by itself—increases productivity.

Newer studies measure specific outcomes, not universal productivity

  • Mobile internet blocking: A randomized controlled trial published in 2025 reported improvements in objectively measured sustained attention, mental health, and subjective well-being after two weeks of smartphone mobile-internet blocking. The study used a delayed-intervention comparison and objectively tracked whether blocking was active. Better sustained attention is relevant to focus, but it is not the same as demonstrated workplace productivity. Read the 2025 study.
  • Screen-time strategies: A preregistered randomized field experiment published in 2023, with 112 participants, compared grayscale mode and self-commitment to time limits against self-monitoring over several weeks. It tested strategies to reduce screen time, not whether commercial focus apps increase completed work. Read the experiment.
  • Task-specific feedback: A 2024 Scientific Reports study of software feedback during self-regulated computer work found that the experimental condition exceeded control on six of eight task-specific performance indicators, including behavioral focus. The authors reported no significant effect on overall executive functions and noted the lack of a baseline measurement period and high attrition. This is promising evidence for feedback in that task setting, not a general result for all apps or work. Read the study.

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis likewise concluded that the effectiveness and optimal design of digital self-control tools remain incompletely understood, calling for longer-term studies and standardized measures. Read the review.

Which kind of focus tool is worth trying?

There is no established universal winner among commercial focus apps. Choose by the problem you need to solve and the amount of friction you are willing to accept:

Approach What it does Trade-off
Usage dashboard Shows time spent in apps or on websites. Provides awareness, but usage visualizations alone have not shown strong support for reducing distracting-media use in the 2021 review.
Prompt or goal reminder Reminds you of a target or asks you to return to a task. Flexible and easy to dismiss; may be more useful when paired with a goal or another intervention.
Scheduled blocker Restricts selected apps or sites during chosen work periods. Adds friction and has some supporting evidence, but can obstruct legitimate access or make it harder to take breaks.
Timed blocking Blocks distractions in defined intervals, as in the 25-minute PomodoLock intervention reviewed in 2021. Combines a timer with blocking; findings about that software intervention do not establish that every timer or Pomodoro app improves output.
Feedback during work Provides software feedback about focus while you work. A 2024 study found benefits on several task-specific indicators, but did not find a significant effect on overall executive functions.

Before choosing a tool, check which devices and apps it covers, whether you can override a block, and whether it lets you plan breaks. A reminder is easier to ignore; a strict block may be more effective at preventing a habitual detour but less convenient when access is genuinely needed. The cited studies do not verify these features for any particular commercial product.

How to try a focus app without mistaking activity for productivity

  1. Identify the distraction. Decide whether the issue is repeated social-media checking, general phone use, or losing track of a specific task. A tool designed to block a behavior is a more direct test than a dashboard alone.
  2. Set a modest, specific rule. For example, block selected distracting sites during a defined work session rather than restricting everything all day. Keep a way to access tools required for work.
  3. Protect breaks. Schedule pauses deliberately if the blocker might otherwise encourage you to work through them. The 2017 field study found that this could happen for some participants.
  4. Track the outcome you care about. Record whether you completed a defined task or produced a concrete deliverable, not only whether screen time fell or the app reported a focused session. Treat attention and app-use changes as clues, not substitutes for output.
  5. Review whether the rule helps. If it interrupts legitimate work, increases stress, or does not change the distraction pattern, adjust its scope or stop using it. The evidence does not establish that a particular setting or product works for everyone.

What the evidence still cannot tell us

Research supports the possibility that some blocking and feedback interventions reduce distraction or improve focus in particular settings. It does not establish that commercial focus apps broadly or durably increase overall productivity. The studies use different populations, tools, durations, and measures, and the reviews identify short study periods and inconsistent methods as important limitations. Evidence for long-term, objectively measured work output remains limited.
