Prepare for a geomagnetic storm the way you would prepare for a possible power outage: assemble basic emergency supplies, keep backup charging ready, make a family communication plan, and know what to do if electricity or communications are disrupted. A storm can affect power systems, GPS and radio signals, but effects vary; it does not mean every household will lose service.

What a geomagnetic storm can affect

Geomagnetic storms disturb Earth’s magnetic environment. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center explains that these disturbances can induce currents in power systems and pipelines. Changes in the ionosphere can also alter radio signal paths and introduce GPS positioning errors. The potential effects depend on storm severity and conditions; NOAA’s G-scale describes possible impacts, not a guarantee that a particular home will experience an outage. See NOAA’s overview of geomagnetic storms and its summary of space-weather impacts.

For household planning, focus on the ordinary consequences of an outage or communications disruption. The U.S. federal preparedness guidance cited here does not call for specialized storm-proof household equipment. If you live outside the United States, follow your local emergency-management agency’s instructions.

  • A battery-powered or hand-crank emergency radio
  • A flashlight and spare batteries
  • A portable phone charger or external battery, kept charged
  • Non-perishable food and other supplies your household needs during an outage

These are general outage supplies, not devices that prevent geomagnetic-storm effects. FEMA and Ready.gov list a battery-powered radio among power-outage essentials in the 2025 National Preparedness Month partner toolkit. Ready.gov’s space-weather preparedness guidance also recommends spare batteries and external chargers.

Plan for charging and communication

  • Keep extra batteries or an external charger available for phones, laptops and other small devices.
  • Keep a car phone charger in your vehicle.
  • Agree on how family members will check in and where they will meet if usual communications are unavailable. Include an out-of-area contact if that suits your plan.

Prepare your vehicle and home

  • Keep your vehicle’s fuel tank at least half full. Fuel pumps at service stations depend on electricity.
  • Find the manual release for an electric garage door and learn how to use it before the power goes out.

Account for medicine and other household needs

If anyone relies on medicine that must be refrigerated, plan ahead and ask a pharmacist or clinician how to handle that specific medicine during an outage. Many refrigerated medicines may remain usable for several hours in a closed refrigerator, but the safe duration and handling depend on the product. Do not assume one rule applies to every medicine.

During a storm or power disruption

  1. Follow official instructions. Monitor the Emergency Alert System and local authorities, using a battery-powered radio if needed.
  2. Reduce electricity use where practical. Disconnect appliances only if local officials direct you to do so.
  3. Keep phone lines available. Avoid unnecessary calls during an emergency so lines remain available for emergency personnel. Use text messages when appropriate and available.

After an outage: check food and medicine

Food in the refrigerator or freezer

Use a food thermometer and time, not smell or taste, to judge safety. Discard perishable food that has been at 40°F (4°C) or above for two hours or longer. Do not taste food to test whether it is safe. Frozen food can be refrozen if it remains below 40°F and still has ice crystals; use a thermometer if you are uncertain.

Refrigerated medicine

Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a specific refrigerated medicine is still safe to use after an outage. The answer depends on the medication and how warm it became.
