If Classic Outlook started freezing, failing to open, or misbehaving after a Microsoft 365 update, first check Microsoft’s current known-issues tracker and note your installed Office build. Timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem. Then use reversible tests—starting Outlook in Safe Mode, isolating add-ins, and trying a new profile—before repairing data files or Office.
First, confirm which Outlook app and symptom you have
This guide applies to Classic Outlook for Windows, not the newer Outlook for Windows app. Microsoft publishes separate troubleshooting guidance, and its Classic Outlook Get Help troubleshooters do not apply to new Outlook. If you are unsure which app is open, check its name in the Start menu or app window before following the steps below. Microsoft’s Classic Outlook troubleshooters
Write down what changed and when, the exact error message, whether Outlook starts, and what is affected: sending or receiving, syncing, search, calendar, or a particular add-in. This makes it easier to match your problem to a documented issue instead of assuming that a problem occurring after an update was caused by it.
Check Microsoft’s known-issues tracker before changing settings
Open Microsoft’s Classic Outlook known-issues tracker. Find the relevant month and compare the issue wording and affected scenario with your own. Note whether Microsoft labels the issue as fixed, under investigation, or as having a workaround. Statuses can change; the tracker page was marked last updated October 2026 when checked for this article, so consult the live page for its current status.

Record your Office build and install updates
Check your installed Outlook/Office version and build, and record the update channel if it is shown. Compare those details with any matching tracker entry. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance also recommends installing available Windows and Microsoft 365/Office updates. Microsoft’s Outlook troubleshooting steps

For a version-specific issue, the exact combination matters. For example, Microsoft documented a March 2026 crash involving older Classic Outlook builds and Teams Meeting Add-in build 1.26.02603. That example is relevant only if your symptoms and software combination match the incident described below; it is not a general explanation for Outlook problems after updates.
Test whether an add-in is involved
Safe Mode starts Classic Outlook without add-ins loaded. It is a diagnostic test: if the problem goes away in Safe Mode, an add-in may be involved, but that result does not identify which one.

- At the bottom, choose Manage: COM Add-ins, select Go, and disable an add-in for testing.
- Restart Outlook and test again. Re-enable or disable add-ins one at a time, restarting after each change, to identify a likely conflict.
Microsoft notes that add-ins can conflict with Classic Outlook. Disable an add-in to diagnose the issue rather than deleting it. If Outlook still fails in Safe Mode, continue to the profile test. Microsoft’s guidance on Outlook not responding or freezing
Try a new Outlook profile
A new profile helps distinguish a problem with the current Outlook profile from a broader application or system issue. Create a new profile using Windows’ Mail setup or Outlook’s profile-management options, then open Outlook with that profile and test the affected feature. Microsoft says that if the new profile resolves the problem, the original profile is corrupt and is the source of the issue. Do not remove the old profile until you have confirmed what data and account settings you need.

If Outlook opens and the issue is specifically an email connection problem, Microsoft also documents a profile Repair option: go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings, select the account on the Email tab, and choose Repair. Microsoft says this option is unavailable in Outlook 2016 when connecting to Exchange. Microsoft’s profile repair instructions
Repair a data file only when the symptoms point to one
If you see a data-file error or have other evidence that an Outlook data file is damaged, Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool, scanpst.exe, can scan Outlook data files and repair errors. It is not a general fix for every freeze, sign-in problem, or update-related failure. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for locating and using the tool rather than changing or deleting data files manually. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance

Repair Microsoft 365 or Office if earlier checks do not help
If the symptom persists after checking known issues and updates, testing Safe Mode and a profile, and addressing any indicated data-file problem, repair the Office installation. Microsoft recommends trying Quick Repair first and Online Repair if Quick Repair does not resolve the issue. These are escalation steps, not guaranteed fixes for every problem that appears after an update. Microsoft’s Outlook troubleshooting guidance
Apply the March 2026 crash workaround only to the matching case
Microsoft reported that, starting around March 12, 2026, some Classic Outlook installations might crash and then prompt to start in Safe Mode. The report attributed the issue to older Outlook builds used with Teams Meeting Add-in build 1.26.02603. Microsoft gave Current Channel Version 2402, Build 17328.20142 or lower as an example of an affected Outlook build. The support page was last updated March 27, 2026, and marked the issue fixed. Microsoft’s March 2026 issue report
For that specific crash and build/add-in combination, Microsoft’s stated resolution was to update Classic Outlook to the latest build. If a user had to remain on an older Office build, Microsoft listed temporarily disabling the Teams Meeting Add-in as a workaround; Online Repair was another option. Do not apply these steps as a universal remedy for unrelated Outlook symptoms.
Quick Recap
Choose the next step by what the test shows
| What you observe | What it helps test | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| A matching entry in Microsoft’s tracker | A known service or software issue, sometimes tied to a particular build | Follow only the workaround or resolution Microsoft lists for that issue and check its current status. |
| Outlook works in Safe Mode | An add-in conflict | Disable and test COM add-ins one at a time. |
| A new profile resolves the problem | A corrupt original profile | Use the working profile and assess the old profile before removing it. |
| A data-file error is present | Possible Outlook data-file damage | Use Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool guidance for scanpst.exe. |
| Earlier checks do not resolve the issue | Possible Office installation problem | Try Office Quick Repair, then Online Repair if needed. |
