Keep an agreed route open for urgent contact, and adjust the setup if total silence makes you anxious or prompts more self-checking. The goal is fewer avoidable interruptions—not being unreachable.
Why notifications can break concentration even when you ignore them
A notification can disrupt attention without you picking up your phone. In a 2015 laboratory study, Cary Stothart, Ainsley Mitchum, and Courtney Yehnert found that phone alerts significantly affected performance on an attention-demanding task even when participants did not interact with their phones. The authors compared the distraction’s magnitude with active phone use under their study conditions; that does not mean every alert causes a noticeable failure in everyday life. Read the study record on PubMed.
Notifications also create a task-switching problem: you may have to redirect your attention to resume the work, even if the alert itself takes only a moment. A 2021 systematic review covering 33 laboratory experiments and 49 interventions found an overall improvement in primary-task accuracy and a reduction in resumption lag with interruption-management interventions. Results varied by intervention and task type, so the pooled findings are not a prediction of how much faster any one person will work. See the systematic review on PubMed.
How to stop phone notifications from distracting you
- Choose a task that merits a focus block. Decide what you need to finish—such as studying a chapter, drafting a report, or reviewing a spreadsheet—and limit notifications for that period rather than treating every hour as identical.
- Keep genuinely urgent alerts and silence the rest. Turn off nonessential notification sounds, banners, and vibrations. Consider disabling email alerts while you work. These measures were included in broader intervention strategies; the evidence does not show that each setting by itself guarantees a particular result. See the randomized intervention paper on PubMed Central.
- Reduce visual cues and easy access. Place the phone face down and out of sight or reach. Close unrelated browser tabs and distracting websites so that a message preview or open page is less likely to pull you away. These are practical strategies described by the APA and included in intervention approaches, not a product-specific comparison. Read the APA’s productivity guidance.
- Set a time to check messages. Pick a realistic check-in point, such as the end of the work block, and tell people who depend on your replies when they can expect to hear from you. Agree on a separate channel or method for genuinely urgent matters. The APA recommends deciding which notifications are necessary and managing expectations when replies may be delayed. See the APA’s healthy technology-use guidance.
- Start with a manageable interval. If a long stretch without alerts feels difficult, begin with a shorter focused period followed by a brief technology break. APA’s 2017 feature describes gradually increasing the work interval; treat this as an expert-suggested routine, not a universal prescription or a guaranteed productivity formula.
- Review and adjust. After a few sessions, consider whether you completed more uninterrupted work and whether the setup made you repeatedly check your phone or feel worried. Keep more alerts muted if the approach helps; use a smaller priority list or scheduled batching if complete silence works against you.
Should you turn off notifications while studying?
Usually, muting nonessential alerts during demanding study is a sensible starting point. The case is strongest when the task requires sustained attention and the alert does not need an immediate response. Keep any channel that a teacher, caregiver, or family member relies on for urgent contact, and arrange a predictable time to check ordinary messages.

Evidence from work settings supports reducing interruptions, but it does not establish one ideal setting for every student or every assignment. A field experiment by Sandra Ohly and Luca Bastin included 247 participants; 124 were assigned to disable communication-app notifications for one day. The researchers reported fewer notification-caused interruptions, improved performance, and lower strain on average. Effects varied with participants’ fear of missing out and pressure to respond, and the one-day study does not establish that permanent blocking works the same way for everyone. Read the 2023 field experiment on PubMed Central.
How to stay reachable without checking every alert
Reduce routine interruptions without cutting off the people who may truly need you. Before a focus block, tell relevant people when you expect to check messages, and name the route they should use for an urgent issue. That might mean leaving a designated call route available while silencing routine app alerts. The right arrangement depends on your responsibilities; the sources do not specify a single technical setting that works across phones and apps.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
When urgent communication is central to your role, use lighter controls: mute nonessential sounds and previews, keep the necessary alert channel, and shorten the interval before your next check. When immediate contact is unlikely, stronger silencing and greater distance from the phone may be appropriate. Match the level of control to the task rather than choosing between all alerts and none.
Is batching notifications better than turning them all off?
It can be a better fit if no alerts at all makes you anxious. APA coverage of notification-batching research reports improved attention and several self-reported outcomes for people who received alerts in batches, while people who received no notifications experienced higher anxiety and fear of missing out. This does not establish that batching is best for everyone, but it supports trying selective silencing or scheduled checks instead of assuming that zero notifications is always optimal. Read the APA’s summary of healthy technology use.

Personal response matters. In the 2023 field experiment, fear of missing out and pressure to respond influenced some performance effects. If you find yourself checking repeatedly because alerts are hidden, try retaining only priority notifications or setting a clear time to review the rest. See the study details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a notification routine that fits the task
| Approach | What it changes | Useful when | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selective silencing | Turns off nonessential sounds, banners, and vibration while retaining priority alerts. | You need fewer interruptions but must remain reachable for some matters. | Decide which alerts are genuinely urgent; otherwise the priority list can become another stream of distractions. |
| Scheduled message checks | Moves routine message review to planned breaks rather than responding as alerts arrive. | You can set expectations about when you will reply. | Make sure urgent contacts have an agreed alternative route. |
| Notification batching | Groups notifications so they arrive at selected times rather than throughout a focus period. | Frequent alerts distract you, but complete silence causes worry. | Batching’s effects are not established as identical for every person or task. |
| Stronger quiet block | Silences nearly all notifications and places the phone out of sight or reach. | You are doing a demanding task and do not expect urgent contact. | If you become anxious or repeatedly check, return to selective silencing or shorter blocks. |
Choose based on four practical questions: how demanding the task is, which contact must get through, whether the routine is easy to maintain, and whether it reduces distraction without increasing worry. The systematic review found that intervention effects differed by task and approach, so a useful setup for deep study may be excessive for work that depends on rapid replies.
