Carbon nanomaterial networks can turn pressure on a flexible surface into a measurable electrical change. In a piezoresistive sensor, pressing the material deforms its conductive network and changes its resistance. But carbon material alone does not determine how a sensor works: flexible devices may instead use capacitive, piezoelectric, or triboelectric sensing.

How do carbon nanotubes make a pressure sensor work?

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are conductive nanomaterials that can be arranged as a network within a flexible material or deposited across a support. When pressure deforms the sensor, the distances and contact points between conductive elements can change. That can open, close, or alter conductive paths, changing the device’s electrical response.

In a piezoresistive sensor, the readout is a change in resistance. A 2024 modeling study describes how deformation changes percolation pathways in CNT–elastomer composites, linking the material’s mechanical deformation to its electrical properties (Elsevier, 2024). This is one mechanism, not a description of every flexible pressure sensor.

What changes inside a flexible pressure sensor when you press it?

The pressure deforms the substrate or composite, which in turn changes the geometry of the conductive network. In a porous structure, compression can bring parts of the network closer together or change their contacts. The resulting electrical signal depends on the sensor’s material arrangement and transduction mechanism.

For example, a 2022 study describes a piezoresistive sensor made by dip-coating a porous elastomer sponge with a CNT network (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2022). The porous support and the network work together: the support’s deformation affects how the conductive paths respond.

Which carbon nanomaterials and structures are used?

Research on flexible pressure sensors includes CNTs, graphene, and carbon black. Their role varies by device. CNTs can be mixed into elastomers or deposited as a coating on a porous support. Graphene can act as the active sensing network or as a compliant electrode, depending on the design, as discussed in a 2025 review (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2025).

4PCS Thin Film Pressure Sensors, 0.4mm FSR 20g-2Kg Range
  • High-quality materials: The flexible film pressure sensor is made of polyester film with excellent mechanical properties, high-conductivity materials, and nano-scale pressure-sensitive material. The top layer is a flexible film with a pressure-sensitive composite; the bottom layer is a flexible film with printed conductive traces. Ideal for Arduino prototyping, sleep monitoring, smart footwear, pressure switches, counters, medical devices, robotics, and industrial process control.
  • Durable & stable: Tested with a 2 kg weight impact, rated for millions of cycles. Low drift and tight tolerance: individual sensor resistance ±3%. Activation time <0.01 s; response time <10 ms. Trigger force ≈20 g. Default trigger condition: sensor resistance <200 kΩ. Operating temperature: −40 °C to +85 °C.
  • Packing: Each plastic box contains 4 film pressure sensors. Thickness ≈0.4 mm. Sensing range: 20 g–2 kg. Built on a flexible PET substrate for conformal mounting on curved or flat surfaces without loss of sensitivity. Sensors are used in series with a fixed resistor; measure the voltage across the fixed resistor: Vout = Vcc * R0 / (R0 + RS) As a rule, choose the fixed resistor R0 ≈ 1/3 to 1/2 of the sensor’s application resistance range. Selecting an appropriate fixed resistor can make pressure vs. output voltage approximately linear over a certain pressure range.
  • Usage instructions: Install the sensor on a solid, flat, and smooth surface. Protect it from sharp objects. Use a cover layer (polycarbonate film or elastomer) for protection. The sensor material is not recommended for direct liquid contact and requires waterproofing if exposed. Overload will not permanently damage the sensor; it will return to normal operation after the load is removed. For designs involving motion, use soft rubber or a spring as part of the trigger mechanism.
  • Pressure-threshold switch application: A typical threshold switch circuit uses a Wheatstone bridge and a voltage comparator. When pressure increases and the sensor resistance drops below R1, the comparator input U1+ exceeds U1− and the comparator output goes high. The high output can trigger downstream devices (for example, a relay to control LEDs, buzzers, motors, etc.).

Architecture matters as much as material choice. A porous elastomer can compress, while a composite can distribute conductive filler through its flexible matrix. In either case, the structure influences how applied pressure rearranges the conductive elements and changes the signal. Consistent deposition of nanomaterials is also a manufacturing concern because variation in the coating can contribute to differences in sensor performance.

Why does carbon not tell you the sensor’s mechanism?

The conductive carbon network is a material component; transduction is the process that converts pressure into an electrical signal. In piezoresistive designs, that signal is a resistance change. Other flexible pressure sensors can use different mechanisms, including:

  • Capacitive: pressure changes capacitance. A 2020 study reported a porous Ecoflex–multiwalled CNT composite in a capacitive sensor (ACS Publications, 2020).
  • Piezoelectric or triboelectric: pressure produces an electrical response through mechanisms distinct from a resistance change; the 2025 review discusses these alongside other flexible-sensor approaches.

Thus, finding CNTs or graphene in a sensor does not by itself establish whether its output is resistance, capacitance, or another electrical quantity. The device’s design and readout determine that.

How should flexible pressure sensor performance be compared?

Compare sensors against the pressure conditions and use case that matter, rather than ranking them by a single sensitivity figure. The 2025 review identifies working range, sensitivity, hysteresis, stability, and response and recovery time as important measures.

What does a published sensitivity figure actually mean?

The 2020 ACS study reported sensitivities of 6.42 kPa⁻¹ over 0–2 kPa and 1.72 kPa⁻¹ over 2–10 kPa for its porous Ecoflex–multiwalled CNT capacitive pressure sensor. These are results for that particular research device and pressure intervals—not general benchmarks for flexible pressure sensors or evidence of retail product performance.
