For Steam Frame VR games, start with a comfortable headset fit, SteamVR render resolution set to Auto, and a refresh rate the game and headset can sustain consistently. If performance stutters, lower render resolution in small steps; if the GPU still struggles, try a lower supported refresh rate. For comfort, adjust each game’s own movement and camera settings—there is no established universal Steam Frame comfort preset.
Start with a stable image, not the highest refresh rate
Valve lists Steam Frame with 2160 × 2160 LCD panels per eye and a supported refresh-rate range of 72–144 Hz. Valve marks 144 Hz as experimental, and the specifications do not guarantee that every game or streaming setup can sustain every mode. The device specifications are on Valve’s Steam Frame product page.
A steady frame rate is generally a better performance and comfort goal than selecting the largest refresh-rate number. Valve’s VR Beta guidance says a smooth, consistent frame rate is most comfortable and enjoyable, and recommends aiming for a consistent 90 Hz baseline. That is general VR guidance, not a Steam Frame-specific preset.
Use SteamVR render resolution as the first performance control
- Open SteamVR Settings > Video > Render Resolution. Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx FAQ recommends trying Auto as the baseline.
- Retest the same scene. If frames remain inconsistent, lower render resolution one step at a time. A lower resolution trades some image sharpness for reduced rendering load; change one setting per test so you can tell whether it helped.
- Stop when delivery is stable enough for you. There is no Valve-published numeric resolution preset for Steam Frame in the cited guidance. The stepwise approach is practical troubleshooting, not a tested Steam Frame configuration.
Valve’s instructions appear in its Half-Life: Alyx FAQ. They are useful SteamVR advice, rather than results from a Steam Frame-specific test.

When to try a lower refresh rate
If lowering render resolution does not resolve stutter and the GPU remains overloaded, try a lower refresh rate supported by the headset and game. Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx FAQ suggests trying 90 Hz to reduce GPU load when frame-rate lag results from GPU overload on Valve Index. That Index-specific instruction does not establish a Steam Frame preset or guarantee the same result on Steam Frame.
Steam Frame’s published range is 72–144 Hz, with 144 Hz designated experimental. Choose based on consistent frame delivery in your game, not on the assumption that the highest mode is automatically best. Valve’s Steam Frame specifications may change ahead of availability.

Adjust comfort in each game
Look in the game’s comfort or accessibility menu and change the options that affect movement and camera motion to your tolerance. Titles may offer different combinations of locomotion modes, snap turning, vignette, or camera-motion controls; these are game-dependent, not established global Steam Frame settings.
- If turning or moving the camera feels uncomfortable, try the title’s available snap-turn or reduced camera-motion options.
- If smooth movement feels uncomfortable, check whether the game offers an alternative locomotion mode.
- Change one option at a time and reassess in the same situation; comfort varies from person to person.
Valve’s VR Beta guidance treats comfort options as settings within individual games. It does not identify one setting combination that works best across titles or players.

What Steam Frame’s built-in streaming features mean for settings
Valve describes Steam Frame as “streaming-first” and lists an included 6 GHz wireless adapter, dual radios, and multi-link streaming as parts of its design. The product information presents these as stability and quality features, but does not provide a manual bitrate-control recipe. If the streamed image is unstable, the cited information does not support a particular network setting to change.
The headset also includes two interior cameras for eye tracking. Valve says foveated streaming uses gaze data to direct higher-quality pixels toward where you look. This is described as a built-in system feature; the available product information does not establish a Steam Frame setting for adjusting “foveation strength.” Valve says the feature “typically offers over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth”; that is Valve’s marketing claim, not an independently verified test result.

Fit and vision options
Begin by adjusting the headset fit and ensuring the image is comfortable before changing performance settings. Valve lists Zenni prescription inserts as compatible with Steam Frame. Compatibility is the claim established by the product page; it does not, by itself, establish current availability, price, or fit details.
