First, determine whether the game runs on Steam Frame itself or streams from a PC. Standalone compatibility and PC-streaming problems follow different troubleshooting paths, so a badge for local play does not determine whether a streamed session will work.
Start by identifying where the game runs
Steam Frame supports both standalone play and PC streaming. Valve says it is primarily designed for streaming high-quality games from a PC, while also allowing games to run entirely on the headset. The standalone compatibility review applies to local games, not games streamed from a PC. Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Compatibility Review Process explains the distinction.
- Standalone: The game is installed and runs on Steam Frame. Check its Steam Frame compatibility status first.
- PC streaming: The game runs on a host PC and is sent to the headset. Check that the host PC and SteamVR work, then investigate the connection and streaming path.
If a standalone game will not launch
Check the game’s Steam Frame compatibility badge in the Steam library or store. Valve describes the ratings as follows:

These labels describe Valve’s standalone review, not a guarantee about PC streaming. Proton, which runs Windows games on Frame’s Linux-based operating system, is still a work in progress. An Unknown rating is not evidence by itself that a game is broken, and a Playable rating may mean you need to make adjustments. The badge does not identify a universal workaround for a particular launch failure.

For developer-facing context, Valve’s standalone Verified criteria require VR titles to run at a minimum of 72 fps at 1728 × 1728 during normal play; games below 1440 × 1440 appear Unsupported. These are compatibility criteria, not observed failure rates or a diagnosis of an individual headset problem.
If SteamVR has a general problem on the PC
For trouble in the SteamVR PC environment, Valve recommends this basic sequence before moving to issue-specific support:

- In the Steam client, open SteamVR’s properties and use Verify Integrity of Tool Files.
- Check the graphics driver version and update it if necessary.
- Restart SteamVR and test again.
- From the SteamVR status window, rerun Room Setup.
- Restart Windows.
If the issue remains, use the relevant article in Valve’s SteamVR troubleshooting index. These Windows and SteamVR steps address the PC SteamVR context; they are not a universal fix for a game that fails to run locally on Steam Frame.
If the headset shows the desktop after SteamVR closes
For the specific PC SteamVR symptom where the headset displays the desktop after SteamVR closes, Steam Support says Direct Mode is not enabled. Open SteamVR settings, select Developer, and enable Direct Mode. This instruction applies to that headset display path; it is not a general remedy for every blank screen or Steam Frame display issue. If a running game looks blurry or stutters
A game that launches but looks low-resolution or stutters needs a different diagnosis from a game that will not start. Valve’s SteamVR Performance Assessment overlay can show whether a running VR title is meeting its performance criteria.
- Open the SteamVR Dashboard and show Advanced Settings.
- Open the Developer tab and enable Draw Performance Assessment in Headset.
- Run the VR title and read the overlay’s application identity, status, average frame time, and target frame time.
The average frame time is a rolling average of the last 32 frames. Valve says the target is based on the minimum required display refresh rate and includes SteamVR headroom. The status can be VERIFIED, PLAYABLE, UNSUPPORTED, or temporarily PENDING while data is collected. See the Steamworks Performance Assessment Overlay documentation.

What an Unsupported result can tell you
Valve notes that repeated frame-time excursions can trigger an Unsupported result; a single isolated frame over the threshold is filtered. The perfcriteria.txt file in the SteamVR logs folder records application details and frame times leading up to a threshold violation. Low resolution can also trigger an Unsupported result, so do not assume every such status is caused by stutter.
If a temporary event, such as a slow loading screen, affected the assessment, use Clear Performance Assessment Status on the SteamVR Now Playing screen to resume evaluation. The overlay is a diagnostic aid: it does not establish that every visible defect is a performance problem.

If the PC-streamed game has connection or image problems
When the game is confirmed to be running on a PC, check the host PC and the network path separately from standalone compatibility. Valve identifies Steam Frame as primarily designed for PC game streaming, and the SteamVR store page lists a broadband internet connection among SteamVR’s minimum requirements. Those details support checking the streaming setup; they do not specify a required router model, Wi-Fi standard, bitrate, or wireless setting.
If you have isolated the problem to wireless streaming, a router for PC-to-headset streaming may be relevant. Buying one is not a fix for a standalone launch failure or a local rendering issue. Valve’s SteamVR store page lists the software’s minimum requirements.
