Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a quick check, look at the Wi-Fi indicator in your device’s network settings: Windows and Android show relative signal bars or icons, while a Mac can open Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics. On iPhone, the Wi-Fi symbol shows that you’re connected over Wi-Fi; Apple’s standard iPhone guide does not document a numeric Wi-Fi strength reading in the status area. Bars help compare locations, but they do not measure internet speed.
Check Wi-Fi signal on Windows
Use the taskbar for a quick reading
- Select the network or Wi-Fi area on the taskbar.
- Find the connected network and inspect its signal indicator. The indicator is a quick visual guide, not a shared numeric scale. A moving bar means Windows is still connecting. Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi instructions describe the network control; labels and layout can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Use Command Prompt for more detail
Open Command Prompt and run netsh wlan show interfaces to inspect the connected wireless interface. To see details for visible networks, including signal strength, channel, and radio type by access point, run netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid. These commands provide more context than the taskbar icon, but the output still does not tell you whether a website or app is performing well. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Check Wi-Fi signal on Mac
- Hold Option and click the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar.
- Choose Open Wireless Diagnostics and follow the prompts to analyze the connection.
Apple says Wireless Diagnostics can identify detected issues, suggest possible solutions, and provide Wi-Fi best-practice information. It also creates a compressed diagnostic file in /var/tmp that you can share with a network administrator or support person. The exact diagnostic screens can vary by macOS version; see Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics instructions.
Check Wi-Fi signal on iPhone
Look for the Wi-Fi symbol in the status area. It indicates that the iPhone is connected to the internet over Wi-Fi; it is not a calibrated strength meter. The cellular bars shown in the same area indicate cellular service, not Wi-Fi. Apple’s iPhone status-icon guide does not document a numeric Wi-Fi RSSI reading in the ordinary status interface.

To judge coverage in a problem area, check whether the connection remains usable there, then compare it with the connection closer to the router. This practical comparison can reveal a location-related problem, but it will not by itself identify whether the cause is signal, interference, or something else.
Check Wi-Fi signal on Android
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
- Compare the Wi-Fi icons shown for available networks. Google says, “A fuller icon means a stronger signal.” Google’s Android Wi-Fi instructions describe the general path; manufacturers and Android versions may use different labels or screens. If the path does not match your phone, open Settings and search for “Internet” or “Wi-Fi.”
What the bars and icons tell you—and what they don’t
Bars and icons are most useful for comparing nearby locations on the same device. They are not a universal scale: three bars on one platform are not established as equivalent to three bars on another. Microsoft defines Windows’ SignalBars value as the current number of bars displayed by the Windows interface, while Google describes its Android icon as a relative signal indicator. Neither establishes a common cross-platform threshold.

More technical Wi-Fi diagnostics may report RSSI, a measure of received signal. Signal is only one factor in how a device evaluates a connection or access point; Apple’s deployment guidance discusses RSSI alongside other network information when Apple devices assess candidate access points. See Apple’s Wi-Fi roaming guidance. A single RSSI number or bar count should not be treated as a universal definition of “good” Wi-Fi: needs vary with the task, radio band, environment, device antenna, interference, and network design.
A strong signal does not guarantee fast or reliable internet. Microsoft notes that connection problems can persist even with a strong signal and a clear channel, while Wireless Diagnostics examines the connection more broadly than a status icon. Slowness can also come from network conditions or an app, site, or firewall rather than weak coverage. A connected Windows icon alone does not rule those issues out.

What to do if Wi-Fi signal is weak
- Compare locations. Check near the router and in the room where the connection struggles. Use the same device for both readings if possible.
- Reduce distance and obstructions. Move closer to the access point, or reposition the router centrally and higher where practical. Walls, metal objects, and other interference can affect coverage. Microsoft’s home-layout guidance also discusses analyzer-reported signal strength; its wording that “The closer to 10 dBm, the stronger the signal” should not be used as a universal consumer cutoff or performance guarantee.
- Consider an extender only if coverage is the problem. If you cannot reposition the router or device and comparisons point to a coverage gap, Microsoft lists a network extender as an option. It is not a general remedy for an ISP outage, slow service plan, congested network, or app-specific fault. Microsoft’s guidance covers placement and extenders.
- Broaden troubleshooting if signal looks strong. Check network conditions such as channel and channel width, and use Mac Wireless Diagnostics where available to look for detected connection issues. A good-looking signal indicator does not settle the cause of poor performance. Microsoft and Apple describe these broader troubleshooting options.
