What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If a Steam game won’t start, closes immediately, or crashes while you play, restart your computer first. Then check that the game supports your operating system, update the OS and relevant drivers, verify the game files, and temporarily close possible interfering apps. If Steam shows a specific error—or the whole computer restarts—use the matching steps below rather than treating every failure as the same problem.
Start with these checks

Restart the computer
Fully restart the computer, open Steam again, and try the game. A fresh restart is Valve’s first general troubleshooting step for launch problems.

Check operating-system support and system requirements
On the game’s Steam store page, check its system requirements and confirm that the game is available for your operating system. Check DLC compatibility too if the failure began after installing an add-on. A computer that only just meets the minimum requirements may still have launch or performance problems.
On Linux, confirm that the title offers Linux support. If you are trying to run a Windows-only game through Proton, check the title’s Proton community reports for compatibility information; do not assume that every game will run correctly.

Update the operating system and relevant drivers
Install available operating-system updates and update the drivers relevant to your hardware. Use the appropriate source for your computer and hardware; there is no single driver version that applies to every system. Valve also notes that Windows Update includes .NET Framework updates, which some AMD drivers and games require.

Verify the game’s installed files
In Steam, open Library, right-click the game (or select its gear icon), then choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Wait for the check to finish before launching the game again.
Steam may report that one or more files failed verification. Valve says this can be normal because some local configuration files are not replaced; that result alone does not prove the repair failed. Avoid verifying while defragmenting or scanning for viruses, and do not verify multiple games at the same time.

Check for background-app conflicts
Recording and overlay tools, antivirus software, firewalls, proxies, system cleaners, and performance utilities can interfere with a game. Temporarily close non-essential apps and retry, changing one thing at a time so you can identify a conflict. Restore normal security protection after a controlled test; do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled.

Use the exact error or symptom to choose the next step
“Preparing to Launch” hangs, or the game closes immediately
Valve describes this pattern as often being an immediate crash after launch. Work through the restart, compatibility, update, file-verification, and background-app checks above. If the game still exits, contact its developer for title-specific help; a general Steam checklist cannot identify every game- or configuration-specific cause.
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”

Check whether your antivirus detected or quarantined a game file. Valve identifies mistaken quarantine as a common cause of this message, but treat any malware alert seriously.

If you are unsure whether a detection is a false positive, ask your antivirus provider and report the issue to Steam. Only create an exception for a file or process if you are confident it is safe.

Verify the game’s files using Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam can reacquire missing or corrupted installation files.

If the error remains, submit a Steam Support ticket. Valve asks for an uncropped screenshot of the error, a System Report, and a list of programs removed during troubleshooting.

“This game is currently unavailable”
Restart Steam, then retry the game after each troubleshooting step. Update drivers and verify the game files. Valve’s support article for this exact error includes further client-folder and permissions steps; consult its current instructions before making changes, and take care not to remove installed game content.
For a third-party game, launching its executable from the installation folder may expose a more specific error. Some games also require secondary installers or components bundled with the game. If an installer was canceled or blocked, Valve says it may need to be run manually from the game’s folder. Avoid older folder-cleanup instructions unless you have checked Valve’s current guidance and protected your installed content.
“Failed to start game (app already running)”
The game may have hung or crashed without closing its process. On Windows, open Task Manager, end the game’s process, and try again. If the process will not close, restart the computer. On macOS or Linux, restart the computer. If you use the Steam client beta, try the normal client too. If the error continues, contact the game’s support team.

The entire computer restarts or shows a blue or gray screen
A whole-computer restart or system-screen failure is different from a game simply closing. Valve says system-wide failures point to a computer problem rather than a Steam or game problem. Update drivers and firmware. If slowdowns or stuttering come before the failure, overheating is a possibility: check that the computer has adequate ventilation. If the problem continues, seek help from the computer manufacturer or a qualified repair professional rather than replacing parts without a diagnosis.

If the general checks and relevant error-specific steps do not resolve the issue, contact the game developer for help with that title. Include the exact error text and describe what happens when you launch the game. For a missing-executable error, provide the screenshot, System Report, and removed-program list requested by Steam Support. If the whole computer fails, pursue computer-level diagnosis instead of treating it as an ordinary game crash.
