To reduce the risk of a magnetic-stripe card being demagnetized, keep it away from magnets when practical. If you want to carry one in a MagSafe wallet, choose a model whose maker explicitly documents magnetic-stripe compatibility for that exact wallet. Apple’s testing requirements cover a specific Apple wallet-and-device setup—not every MagSafe wallet.
Why a MagSafe wallet can be a concern
A magnetic stripe stores information magnetically, so exposure to a magnet can make the stripe unreadable. Apple warns that magnets can demagnetize the magnetic strip on its titanium Apple Card. Its care guidance specifically cautions that a magnetic purse or bag latch can cause this damage: Apple Support’s Apple Card cleaning and care guidance.
That warning supports a practical precaution: avoid storing a stripe card directly against a magnet unless the wallet maker provides compatibility information for the exact model. The available sources do not establish a failure rate for cards carried in MagSafe wallets, so there is no reliable percentage to assign to the risk.
How to choose a MagSafe wallet for stripe cards
Check the wallet maker’s documentation, not just the product’s MagSafe or RFID-blocking claims. Look for an explicit statement about magnetic-stripe cards and make sure it applies to the specific wallet model and the way you will attach and carry it.

- Model-specific compatibility: Does the maker say that magnetic-stripe cards are supported in this exact wallet?
- Test details: Does the documentation explain how stripe cards were tested and whether they remained readable afterward?
- Relevant setup: Does the test cover card orientation and the wallet/device configuration you plan to use?
- Separate claims: Is magnetic-stripe compatibility addressed separately from RFID or NFC blocking?
An RFID-blocking claim alone does not establish magnetic-stripe protection. The available sources do not show that an RFID-blocking sleeve prevents a stripe from being demagnetized.
What Apple’s wallet test does—and does not—show
Apple’s accessory design requirements say a MagSafe case’s magnet array must not interfere with magnetic-stripe cards in an attached iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe. The requirements document is dated September 9, 2025, and is available at a third-party mirror of Apple’s Accessory Design Guidelines for Apple Devices.

The document describes a check using low-coercivity (LoCo) stripe cards: the stripe faces the magnets, the card rests against the wallet’s magnetic side, and the wallet is attached to the device for 10 seconds. The card is then checked for readability and unchanged recorded contents. This is a procedure described in Apple’s requirements for that accessory configuration; it is not independent testing, a universal standard, or proof that a third-party wallet passes the same test.

The magnetic-stripe warning is specifically about stripe cards. It does not establish that every contactless chip, RFID or NFC card, hotel key, or transit card is either safe or unsafe with every MagSafe accessory. Card construction and wallet design can differ, so use product-specific compatibility information rather than assuming all card types behave alike.

Apple Pay is also different from carrying a physical card’s stripe. Apple says Apple Pay uses a device-specific Device Account Number stored in the Secure Element; an issuer can prevent that number from being used on a magnetic-stripe card, by phone, or on websites.
