If BG3 cheats or a console stopped working after an update, first identify which feature you mean: a supported mod in the in-game Mod Manager, a third-party mod, or the separate Lua command window from BG3 Script Extender. Each has a different fix. Update supported mods, isolate third-party mods, and check Script Extender’s configuration only if the missing feature is its command window.
First identify which “console” or cheat feature failed
“Console cheats” can refer to different tools. The Script Extender Lua console is a separate command window; it is not a general in-game cheat overlay. A cheat feature may instead come from a supported mod installed through BG3’s Mod Manager or a third-party mod installed outside that system. Larian distinguishes supported and third-party mods in its mod troubleshooting guidance, while the Script Extender console guide describes the separate window.
- Supported mod: Start in the in-game Mod Manager.
- Third-party mod: Isolate the mod and, if needed, follow Larian’s file-removal guidance.
- Script Extender Lua console: Check the extender’s launch/update path and its console setting.
Before changing anything, note your platform, game patch, mod name and version, whether you are playing alone or multiplayer, and whether the failure began immediately after the update. These details help distinguish a compatibility issue from a configuration problem; an update-related failure alone does not establish that the base game is broken.
Update supported mods in the Mod Manager
- Open BG3’s in-game Mod Manager.
- Go to the Installed tab.
- Check affected mods for an Update control and install available updates.
- Retry the feature in-game.
Larian says supported mods can be updated from the Mod Manager. If you are playing multiplayer, every player should use the same mod set at the same versions; a mismatch can prevent a modded session from behaving consistently. See Larian’s mod guidance and multiplayer troubleshooting.

Isolate third-party mods after the update
For problems involving third-party mods, Larian recommends removing existing mod files when troubleshooting update-related launch or in-game issues, especially after a major update. Its official instructions identify the game installation’s DataMods and DataPublic folders and, where applicable, the profile’s modsettings.lsx file.
Back up saves and configuration before changing local files. Follow Larian’s instructions for your own installation and profile rather than deleting files based on a guessed path. Modded saves and configurations may depend on those files.

- Disable mods and retry the same action that failed.
- If the failure disappears, re-enable or update mods in a controlled way to identify the conflict. Then check the mod’s listing or contact its author.
- If the failure remains with mods disabled, report it to Larian as a possible base-game issue.
Larian notes that it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods. For supported mods, use the Mod Manager listing or contact the mod author with the mod name and version and your platform.
If the Script Extender Lua console window will not open
Handle the extender and its console setting as separate checks. Norbyte’s Script Extender release page says it updates automatically when you launch the game and that the extender does not run on game versions older than Patch 5. Avoid relying on old manual installation, version, or rollback steps unless they have been verified for your platform and current build.

Enable the separate command window
If the specific problem is that the Lua command window does not appear, the configuration guide says to create or edit ScriptExtenderSettings.json in the game’s bin folder and set CreateConsole to true. If you edit an existing JSON file, keep its commas and structure valid. The guide says the second window opens with the game and accepts commands while the game is running.
This setting is only needed for configuration commands for a mod. If you use a mod with its default settings and do not need to enter commands, the guide says you can skip creating the console window.

Check platform and multiplayer differences
These troubleshooting paths do not apply equally to every platform. Larian’s official mod tools are available on PC; supported in-game mods may be available across platforms subject to platform limitations and curation. A PC Script Extender configuration guide does not apply automatically to console players. If you use modded cross-saves or cross-platform multiplayer, check the current platform and patch status as well as the mod set, since platform version differences can affect compatibility. Larian outlines these distinctions in its mod guidance and multiplayer troubleshooting.
