To disable BG3 “console cheats,” first identify what you mean: the Script Extender debug window, a mod that enables cheats, or cheat effects already saved into your game. You can hide the debug window or remove mods, but neither action is known to undo changes already written to a save. Back up your saves before changing mods; a save may rely on the mods with which it was created.
Choose the route that matches your setup

Disable the Script Extender debug console
If a separate debug window appears alongside the game, it may be the Baldur’s Gate 3 Script Extender console. A Nexus Mods guide edited October 16, 2023 documents this procedure:
- Open the game’s
binfolder and look forScriptExtenderSettings.json. - Open the file in a text editor and change the
CreateConsolesetting tofalse. - Save the file, then restart the game to check whether the console window is gone.
The same guide says you can delete ScriptExtenderSettings.json if you no longer need its settings. This is a documented Script Extender procedure, not a universal setting for every BG3 installation. If the file is absent, check how Script Extender is currently installed rather than creating or deleting unrelated files. See the Nexus Mods Script Extender debug console guide.
Turn off official mods in the in-game Mod Manager
For mods installed through BG3’s supported Mod Manager, open the in-game Mod Manager and uncheck the installed mods you want to disable. Larian recommends testing whether the problem persists after disabling mods. Its Mod Issues guidance distinguishes mod-related problems from game issues and warns that changing mod state can affect a modded save.

For multiplayer, players need the same mods at the same version, according to Larian’s Official Mod Support documentation. If you play in a group, coordinate before changing the active mod list.
Remove third-party mods from a PC installation
Third-party mods can leave files in the game installation or the player profile. Larian’s support guidance identifies the installation’s Mods and Public folders, and the profile’s modsettings.lsx file, as places to check when troubleshooting. On Windows, the profile is under local AppData, not Documents. Larian says the launcher can open the profile and installation folders.

- Back up your saves and note which mods the current playthrough uses.
- Use Larian’s launcher or its support instructions to locate the installation and profile folders.
- Inspect the installation’s
ModsandPublicfolders for files associated with the third-party mods you intend to remove. Do not delete files you cannot identify. - Check the profile’s
modsettings.lsx. Larian says it can be deleted when you are not using a new profile for the current patch; do not treat this as a routine step without considering your profile and mod setup. - Launch the game and test with a backed-up save. If the launcher reports altered files or a mismatch, consult Larian’s instructions for the altered-files log in the launcher cache.
Larian particularly recommends checking for existing mod files when troubleshooting after a major game update. Its official mod troubleshooting page is the targeted starting point. For a more extensive Windows cleanup—including BG3 Mod Manager and Script Extender files—the community-authored BG3 Modding Community Wiki cleanup guide is an advanced option. A full cleanup is more invasive than simply disabling the debug window; follow it only if that broader removal is what you need.
What changes when you disable mods in an existing save?
A save created with mods may fail to load, crash, or behave unpredictably if those mods are no longer available. Larian warns that choosing not to restore mods used by a save can cause crashes or other gameplay problems. Its December 4, 2024 console notice concerned a particular 100-mod-limit fix, so it is not a general method for resetting cheats; its warning about saves that depend on mods is still relevant.

Keep an untouched backup before changing the active mod setup. If the game stops loading or becomes unstable, restore the prior mod configuration and try the backed-up save. Do not assume a save has been repaired just because the debug window disappeared or the game launches.
Can you undo cheat effects already saved?
Disabling the Script Extender console stops that window from appearing, and removing a mod can prevent it from loading if the removal succeeds. Neither step demonstrates that changes to inventory, character stats, flags, or other saved state have been reversed. The documented sources do not provide a universal rollback procedure for those effects.

If you need a playthrough from before cheats were used, load a known clean save from that point. Without one, restoring a normal state is case-specific; changing files or disabling mods is not a guaranteed substitute.

Do not use PC folder paths or file-removal instructions on a console. Larian’s console notice described a specific mod-limit fix, not a universal console-cheat reset. If a console save depends on mods, removing or declining to restore them may cause crashes or other gameplay problems. Preserve the save and follow the relevant in-game mod controls for your platform.
