The original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller (model HAC-013) works with Nintendo Switch 2. To troubleshoot a failed connection, first update and restart the console, then try pairing by USB through the powered-on dock and wirelessly from the controller-pairing screen. If neither method works after checking the cable and dock connections, Nintendo says the controller needs service.
Before troubleshooting: confirm the controller and console
Nintendo’s U.S. support instructions cover pairing the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller with Switch 2. Check the model number on the back of the controller, beneath the Nintendo logo: official original Pro Controllers are marked HAC-013. If yours is a third-party controller, contact its maker for help.
The console must be powered on to pair a controller; pairing is not available while Switch 2 is asleep. [Nintendo Support]
Update and restart Switch 2
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > System Update and install an available update.
- If the console is already current, hold the POWER button for at least three seconds.
- Choose Power Options, then Restart.
Try wired pairing through the dock
- Power on Switch 2 and place it in its dock.
- Connect the Pro Controller to the dock using its USB charging cable. Nintendo identifies the original cable as model HAC-010.
- Press a button on the controller, such as A, to turn it on and pair.
If it does not connect, press SYNC once, then press another controller button and retry. Try a different USB port on the dock and, if available, another USB charging cable or another dock. Change one item at a time; these checks can help isolate the connection path, but a failed test by itself does not prove which part is faulty. A compatible replacement cable is only a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix.

Pair wirelessly
- On the powered-on console, open Controllers > Change Grip and Order.
- While that screen remains open, hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
Nintendo’s guide specifies that the console must be powered on and says a controller cannot be paired while the console is in sleep mode. [Nintendo Support]
When to contact Nintendo
If the original HAC-013 Pro Controller will not pair either through the dock’s USB connection or wirelessly, Nintendo says it needs service. Nintendo’s U.S. support guidance does not identify a publication date; service is the next step after both pairing methods fail.
