Silent Hill: Townfall makes stealth one way to survive—not a substitute for combat. You can use its CRTV to find nearby threats, then decide whether to hide, distract, run, or fight. The developers say drawing too much attention can prompt enemies to hunt you, so managing what you reveal and what you learn becomes part of each encounter.

Does Silent Hill: Townfall have stealth?

Yes. Writer and director Jon McKellan describes stealth as an important survival strategy, supported by the CRTV, environmental opportunities, and a peek system. That makes stealth a deliberate encounter option rather than an incidental way to avoid combat. PlayStation’s developer feature outlines these tools and the choices available to players.

The game’s design changes the question an encounter poses. Instead of asking only whether you can defeat an enemy, you can consider whether to avoid it, redirect its attention, escape, or fight. The sources describe these options but do not establish a single tactic as best for every situation.

What can you do when you encounter an enemy?

  • Hide: Use stealth and the environment to avoid danger.
  • Distract: Divert an enemy rather than engaging it directly.
  • Run: Leave an encounter instead of trying to win a fight.
  • Fight: Use combat when that seems suitable to the situation.

McKellan says the team wants players to experiment and choose the approach that feels most useful in each encounter, rather than forcing one playstyle. Stealth matters, but the developers do not describe the game as favoring it over combat. The July developer interview discusses that intended flexibility.

What does the CRTV do in Silent Hill: Townfall?

The CRTV is a handheld device that uses analog-inspired audio and video signals. It can help Simon locate nearby threats, receive signals that reveal story material, and assist with challenges. The developers describe it as active gameplay equipment, not just a way to deliver atmosphere or story.

Its role in stealth is especially important: the device can help you gather information about nearby danger before choosing how to respond. At the same time, its unstable signals are meant to make relying on it feel uneasy. As McKellan puts it, “We wanted to create a situation where players have to rely on this device to survive, even while feeling uneasy about relying on it too much.” The developer interviews explain the CRTV’s gameplay and narrative roles (February feature; July interview).

How does attention affect survival?

The developers say that drawing too much attention causes enemies to dynamically hunt the player and use their senses to track them. That makes exposure a risk: aggressive or careless encounters may invite pursuit, while stealth offers another way to manage danger. The public descriptions do not specify detection meters, exact sensory rules, or how particular enemies respond, so those details should not be assumed.

In practical terms, stealth is about more than staying out of sight. The CRTV, environmental opportunities, the peek system, and the option to retreat all support decisions about when to observe and when to act. The sources describe the design intent, not measured success rates for any tactic.

How does first-person gameplay change Silent Hill?

Townfall is presented entirely from a first-person perspective. That framing limits how much of the surrounding space you can see at once, making proximity and uncertainty more immediate. The developers connect the viewpoint to the CRTV and to tactile, detailed puzzles; PlayStation also highlights the importance of sound when the player’s field of view is restricted.

On PS5, 3D audio helps convey nearby sounds, while DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers provide feedback such as approaching footsteps and weapon feel. These features reinforce awareness and tension; they do not replace the need to decide how to handle a threat. PlayStation’s September feature describes the game’s audio and controller feedback.
