SILENT HILL: Townfall and the 2024 SILENT HILL 2 remake approach horror from different angles: Townfall puts you directly into a first-person view and explicitly treats stealth and evasion as ways to survive, while the remake uses an over-the-shoulder camera and highlights revamped combat. Konami frames Townfall around tension and uncertainty; Silent Hill 2 centers on James Sunderland’s guilt, grief, and existential horror. Those are official descriptions of each game’s design and themes—not evidence that one is scarier or better.

At a glance: camera, stealth, and horror

What differs SILENT HILL: Townfall SILENT HILL 2 remake
Camera Fully first-person, according to the developers’ gameplay explanation on PlayStation.Blog. Over-the-shoulder, according to Konami’s remake announcement.
Stealth and evasion Explicitly presented as survival strategies, supported by the CRTV, the environment, and a peek system. The developers also describe enemies to fight. Konami’s cited description highlights the camera and revamped combat; it does not establish that stealth is absent.
Combat Combat is part of the design, alongside evasion. A developer interview also discusses first-person combat. Konami describes a revamped combat system.
Official horror framing Tension and escalating uncertainty, according to series producer Motoi Okamoto. James Sunderland’s guilt, grief, and existential horror.
Story frame A self-contained psychological horror story set in Scotland in 1996. James returns to Silent Hill, a town he and his late wife Mary used to visit.

How the camera changes the experience

Townfall keeps the view first-person

Screen Burn Interactive describes Townfall as the first Silent Hill psychological horror title with a fully first-person perspective. That places the player’s view inside the environment rather than behind the protagonist. The developers say the game combines this perspective with enemies to fight or evade and story-driven puzzles.

The camera distinction is a concrete design difference, not a measure of which game is more frightening. A first-person view can make what the character sees feel immediate, while the official sources do not establish that this produces a stronger horror experience for every player.

Silent Hill 2 uses an over-the-shoulder view

Konami says the 2024 remake shifts Silent Hill 2 to an over-the-shoulder camera and revamps combat. Its announcement also identifies expanded explorable areas and added cutscenes as remake changes. These disclosures foreground exploration, presentation, and combat; they are not grounds to claim that the remake has no stealth.

Does Townfall have stealth?

Yes. Its developers explicitly describe stealth and evasion as survival strategies. The design explanation names three supporting elements: the CRTV, opportunities in the environment, and a peek system. The CRTV is a device connected to video and audio signals; Screen Burn’s interview says that developing it as both a video and audio tool broadened its role in gameplay and the story.

  • CRTV: A central device with video- and audio-signal functions, which the developers connect to gameplay and narrative.
  • Environment: The developers say players can use environmental opportunities as part of stealth.
  • Peek system: A named mechanic supporting the stealth design.
  • Combat remains an option: The official description includes enemies to fight as well as evade, so stealth is part of the survival approach rather than a claim that the game is purely nonviolent.

For the remake, the available Konami description establishes an over-the-shoulder view and revamped combat, but does not give enough information to make a categorical comparison about whether stealth is present or how extensive it is. The supported distinction is that stealth is explicitly explained as a survival feature in Townfall, while the cited remake announcement emphasizes combat.

What kind of horror does each game emphasize?

Townfall: tension and uncertainty

Konami series producer Motoi Okamoto described Townfall’s intended style this way in a PlayStation.Blog interview published July 30, 2026: “Generally, Silent Hill: Townfall’s style of horror is less about jump scares and gore, and more about tension and escalating uncertainty.” This is the producer’s characterization of the design, not a promise that the game contains no jump scares or gore.

Silent Hill 2: James’s guilt and grief

Konami presents the remake through James Sunderland’s return to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his late wife Mary. Their history with the town and James’s grief and guilt form the story’s psychological and existential horror. This is a different thematic emphasis from Townfall’s stated focus on tension and uncertainty; it does not establish that one approach is more effective.

Which game fits the horror experience you want?

  • Choose Townfall if you want a first-person viewpoint and a game whose developers explicitly describe stealth and evasion as survival tools, alongside combat and story-driven puzzles.
  • Choose the Silent Hill 2 remake if you want James Sunderland’s story of grief and guilt, presented from an over-the-shoulder perspective with a revamped combat system.
  • Don’t choose on a claim of “more stealth” or “scarier.” The official descriptions support a clear difference in camera and in how stealth is disclosed, but do not provide a measured comparison of fear or the full extent of stealth in the remake.

What the sales figures do—and do not—show

Konami reported that the Silent Hill 2 remake reached five million cumulative players in 2026. It also reported that the Silent Hill franchise had sold more than 17.8 million copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. These figures describe different measures—players for the remake and copies for the franchise—and do not compare the popularity or sales of Townfall against the remake.
