There is no documented single search box that submits one query to Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, and arXiv at once. The reliable approach is to search each service separately with the same core research question, adapt the query to each platform, then compare and deduplicate the results.

Build one concept query before searching

Start with the question you want to answer, then reduce it to the central concept or relationship. List alternate spellings, synonyms, technical terms, and—if relevant—names of likely authors or publication venues. A shared concept query keeps the searches aligned, but it should not be copied unchanged when a platform uses different search syntax.

Google Scholar recommends using secondary sources to identify unfamiliar terminology. After the initial search, follow references to find earlier work and use “Cited by” to find newer or more specific work. Its help notes that research questions rarely have a single answer, so treat the first results page as a starting point rather than a complete literature search. Google Scholar Search Help

Search each service using its own controls

Google Scholar: broad discovery and citation trails

  1. Search the main topic terms first. For a known paper, put its title in quotation marks. Use author: when searching for an author.
  2. Use Advanced Search to limit by author, title, publication, or date.
  3. For newer work, choose “Since Year” to rank recent results by relevance, or “Sort by date” to put the newest additions first.
  4. Open promising records and check “All versions,” “Related articles,” and “Cited by.” Look for PDF or HTML links, repository copies, and library access.

Google Scholar covers multiple kinds of scholarly material, including journal and conference papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts, and technical reports. Its broad coverage is not guaranteed to be complete or uninterrupted. Google says the service displays at most 1,000 results for a query and does not provide bulk record access. Its undated help page, checked in 2026, says new papers are normally added several times a week; corrections to existing records can take six to nine months to a year or longer. Semantic Scholar: repeat the idea, not complex Boolean syntax

Run the same central concept as a plain-language query. The Semantic Scholar search FAQ says quoted text works, but Boolean operators and wildcards do not work in its site search. A string such as climate AND migration should therefore not be assumed to behave like a Boolean query in another service. Use the site’s available filters to narrow results. Semantic Scholar FAQ

For programmatic searching, Semantic Scholar’s Academic Graph API offers relevance-ranked paper search that matches plain text against titles and abstracts. Its documentation describes filters including year, publication type, field of study, and open-access PDF availability; the relevance search returns up to 1,000 results. API capabilities are distinct from the site’s search-box syntax. Semantic Scholar Academic Graph API

arXiv: target fields and categories

Use arXiv when you want to search its preprint repository, especially when a field or subject category matters. Its search interface and API support field prefixes including ti for title, au for author, abs for abstract, cat for category, and all for all searchable fields. The API also documents fields for comments, journal references, and report numbers.

Unlike Semantic Scholar’s site search, arXiv supports Boolean operators such as AND, OR, and ANDNOT, as well as phrase searches and submitted-date ranges. The API supports pagination and sorting. For repeated API calls, arXiv’s manual recommends waiting three seconds between calls. arXiv API User’s Manual

Compare results without treating the services as interchangeable

Service Best use Search and interpretation notes
Google Scholar Broad scholarly discovery, citation chasing, and finding alternate versions or access routes. Supports quoted titles, an author operator, Advanced Search fields, date controls, “Cited by,” and related-work navigation. The service says it displays up to 1,000 results per query and offers no bulk record access. Google Scholar Search Help
Semantic Scholar Scientific-literature discovery with site filters or API-based searches. Site search accepts quoted text but not Boolean operators or wildcards. API relevance search uses plain text against titles and abstracts and supports filters such as year, publication type, field of study, and open-access PDF availability. FAQ and API documentation
arXiv Searching arXiv’s preprint corpus, with field and category constraints or API retrieval. Supports fielded searches and Boolean construction, plus submitted-date filtering through the API. Records are versioned, so check the version and dates. arXiv API User’s Manual

Do not compare ranking positions or scores as if they came from one shared system. Google Scholar says its ranking considers document text, publication venue, author, and citation count and recency; Semantic Scholar and arXiv use their own search ordering. Citation counts and relevance rankings are not directly comparable measures of a paper’s quality. Google Scholar Search Help, Semantic Scholar FAQ, and arXiv API User’s Manual

Check dates, versions, and access

  • Separate publication dates from repository dates. An arXiv submitted or updated date is not necessarily the date a paper appeared in a journal or conference. Check the record’s version history and any journal reference.
  • Inspect alternate records. A paper may appear as a preprint, a published version, or a repository copy. Match titles, authors, DOI, and arXiv identifier before counting records as separate works.
  • Verify full-text availability. A visible abstract does not mean the paper is freely available. Scholar’s PDF, HTML, and library links are routes to check; access may require a subscription. Compare publisher, repository, library, and preprint versions where available. Google Scholar Search Help
  • Interpret coverage cautiously. Google Scholar searches a broad range of scholarly material, while arXiv searches its own repository. Semantic Scholar is a scientific-literature discovery service. No ranking or one service’s coverage statement establishes that it is the most complete source for every topic.

Keep a reproducible search record

For a class project, report, or literature review, save enough detail for someone else to repeat the searches. Record each service separately rather than saying one query was “searched everywhere.”
