Settings vary by game, and no single field-of-view value or combination works for everyone. Stop playing and rest if dizziness or nausea starts.
Why horror games can feel uncomfortable
Motion sickness can happen when visual information conflicts with signals from the inner ear and the body’s movement-sensing systems. The CDC describes sensory conflict as a widely accepted explanation for motion sickness; it is general guidance, not a diagnosis specific to horror games. In a game, the camera may appear to move even while you are sitting still, which can contribute to discomfort for some players.
Eye discomfort is a separate, though sometimes overlapping, issue. Prolonged screen use can be associated with dry or blurry eyes and headache. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) says people tend to blink less during screen and other close-up work, which can contribute to dry-eye symptoms. It attributes digital eye discomfort to device use and reduced blinking—not to the small amount of blue light from screens.
Which game settings should you try first?
Change one setting at a time, then play only as long as you feel comfortable. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helps. Settings may appear under Accessibility, Camera, Display, or Gameplay, and their names and availability vary by game and platform.

Reduce motion you do not control
- Turn off camera shake or reduce its intensity.
- Disable head bob, weapon bob, or weapon sway if available.
- Turn off motion blur if it makes movement harder to tolerate.
- Disable automatic camera movement or changes in camera angle where possible.
- Reduce camera sensitivity or acceleration if quick turns feel uncomfortable.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 identifies adjustable field of view, camera movement and sensitivity, and options for camera shake, bobbing, blur, weapon sway, and automatic camera movement as relevant accessibility controls. The guideline explains: “This is why intentional decisions around settings related to camera field of view, camera bobbing, motion blur, weapon sway, automatic changes in camera angle, and more are critical when creating more accessible experiences.” These are controls to experiment with, not a guaranteed treatment.
Adjust field of view gradually
Try changing field of view (FOV) in small steps and pause to assess how you feel. The effect depends on the game, display, and player; the Microsoft guideline supports making FOV adjustable but does not establish that a wider or narrower setting is best for everyone. If a change makes things worse, return to the previous value.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Keep a simple settings record
Before a session, note the settings you changed. If discomfort increases, stop rather than continuing to test; when you next play, you can revert or adjust a single setting. Do not use a test session to push through symptoms.
How to reduce eye discomfort while playing
AAO recommends practical changes to make screen viewing more comfortable:
Rank #3
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
- Take occasional breaks and look at something in the distance. The 20-20-20 rule is one easy reminder: every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. It is a helpful prompt, not a guarantee or a medically required schedule.
- Sit about 25 inches (roughly an arm’s length) from the screen, if your setup allows.
- Position the screen so you look slightly downward at it.
- Adjust brightness to a comfortable level and reduce glare from the screen or surrounding lights.
If your eyes feel dry, AAO suggests artificial tears for dry-eye symptoms. They may provide relief for dryness, but they do not address the visual-motion mismatch that can contribute to game-related motion sickness.
When to stop playing
If dizziness or nausea begins, stop the game and rest rather than trying to play through it. Square Enix’s health and safety guidance advises contacting a physician for further guidance if you feel dizzy or nauseous. If symptoms persist or concern you, seek advice from a health professional.

What these tips cannot establish
Official accessibility guidance and general eye-care and motion-sickness advice support trying these adjustments, but they do not establish a universally effective setting, a horror-game-specific cure, or a special monitor or glasses that prevent symptoms. AAO says special computer eyewear is unnecessary and that screen blue light has not been shown to harm eyes. If you are considering medication or other treatment, ask a pharmacist or clinician for advice; the guidance here is not a substitute for medical care.
