To create a workflow in Slack, open Agents & tools in the desktop app, choose Workflows, then select New and Build Workflow. Pick a trigger, add and configure steps, set access and management options, then select Finish Up and publish. Workflow Builder is available on paid plans, and an administrator may restrict who can use it.
Before you start
- Plan: Slack lists Workflow Builder as a paid-plan feature. [Slack’s Workflow Builder guide]
- Permission: Members can create workflows by default, but owners or admins can restrict access. On Enterprise, administrators can disable Workflow Builder for the organization. - Channel posting: If a step will post to a channel, you need permission to post there. [Slack’s Workflow Builder guide]

Create and publish the workflow
- Open the builder: In Slack’s desktop app, select Agents & tools in the sidebar, then Workflows > New > Build Workflow. If your sidebar uses a different label, check Tools or Automations.
- Choose a trigger: The trigger is what starts the workflow. For example, a member can start one by clicking a button, or it can begin when someone joins a channel. Choose the event that matches when the work should begin. [Slack’s Workflow Builder guide]
- Add steps in order: Add and configure the actions the workflow should perform. Slack steps act within Slack; connector steps interact with third-party services; custom steps are created for your organization. Save each step as you configure it. - Add inputs or controls if needed: Use variables to carry submitted information into later steps, or add buttons when a person needs to advance or respond during the process. [Slack’s Workflow Builder guide]
- Name it and set access: Give the workflow a name and, as needed, a description. Choose managers and configure who can find, use, or copy the workflow. The creator automatically becomes a manager. - Review and publish: Select Finish Up, review the workflow details and permissions, then publish. If its trigger is a link, share that link in a Slack conversation accessible to the intended users. [Slack’s Workflow Builder guide]
Plan triggers, steps, and access before building
A workflow is a trigger followed by ordered steps. Before building, identify the event that should start the process, the actions needed to complete it, and which people should be able to find and use it. Slack’s FAQ says a workflow can contain up to 100 steps; the FAQ page does not state a publication year. [Slack’s Workflow Builder FAQ]

Connector and administrator requirements
A connector may require approval or additional setup before you can use it. The workflow creator must authenticate an account with the connected service. Depending on the connector setup, the creator can choose whether each workflow user signs in with their own account or the workflow uses the creator’s credentials. Owners and admins can restrict the triggers and steps members may use. Restricting a trigger or step does not remove it from workflows that already use it. If an option is unavailable while you build, ask an administrator whether it is restricted or needs approval. [Slack’s Workflow Builder settings]

Fix common setup problems
- You cannot find Workflows or Build Workflow: Check the alternate sidebar labels, then ask an owner or admin whether Workflow Builder access is restricted. It is available on paid plans. [Slack’s Workflow Builder guide] [Slack’s Workflow Builder settings]
