In the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, extraction moved cash, weapons, and other loot into Storage, while dying generally cost the contents of your Backpack. The new DMZ planned for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 uses a different system: rank XP is retained on death and unlocks FOB stations, stash items, and printer recipes. Its item-by-item death losses and seasonal reset rules have not been established in prelaunch sources. This guide is current as of October 7, 2026; the new mode is scheduled to launch October 23, 2026.
First, which DMZ progression system are you asking about?
There are two distinct versions in this guide. The original DMZ was part of Warzone 2.0 and its mechanics below come from official 2022–2023 materials. The new DMZ is planned to launch with Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026. Its details here are prelaunch plans reported by developers and, for one progression-track detail, a current secondary report—not confirmation of every launch rule. Call of Duty’s original DMZ launch overview and the June 7, 2026 Xbox Wire developer interview describe different systems; do not assume that a rule from one carries over to the other.
What do you keep or lose in the new Modern Warfare 4 DMZ?
As of October 7, 2026, rank XP is the clearest confirmed answer: Studio Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot said it is not reduced when an operator dies. That XP unlocks FOB stations, stash items, and 3D-printer recipes. This is separate from what an operator carries into a deployment. The prelaunch sources do not provide a complete item-by-item list of what survives death or a definitive seasonal reset policy.
Progress that persists through death
Rank XP builds the DMZ progression track even when a deployment ends in death. Cecot described the rule directly: “Even if you die, we’re not giving you half XP, nothing like that.” It unlocks stations at the Forward Operating Base (FOB), items for the stash, and recipes for the 3D printer.

Operator growth and recovery
The developers describe persistent operator inventories, backpacks, loadouts, and trait trees tied to individual operators. Cecot gave an example of earning cash with a backup operator to rescue a lost character and continue that character’s progression. The interview does not establish an exact rescue-cost formula, so treat that example as an explanation of the intended system, not a fixed price or universal recovery rule.
Loot and seasonal resets still need launch confirmation
Rank XP retention does not tell you whether a specific weapon, backpack item, or other carried object survives operator death. The cited prelaunch sources also do not define which unlocks, stash items, or operator progress carry from one season into another. Check official launch documentation and later patch notes for those rules rather than applying the original DMZ’s backpack or reset mechanics.

How rank, weapons, cash, and crafting work in the new DMZ
The new system separates long-term progression from the resources used to equip an operator. Rank XP grants progression unlocks; cash pays for weapon construction at the FOB; and ingredients plus recipes power the 3D printer.
Rank track and FOB unlocks
Xbox Wire’s interview says rank unlocks FOB stations, stash items, and printer recipes. Windows Central reported on October 5, 2026, that the DMZ progression track reaches level 70. That maximum is a prelaunch secondary-report detail, so confirm it against official launch information once available.

Cash builds weapons; it is not rank XP
Cash earned during missions and operations is wired to the FOB and used to construct guns. Players can purchase attachments they have unlocked; the cost rises as they add attachments, and some attachment types cost more than others. Cecot summarized the system: “In Modern Warfare 4‘s DMZ, Gunsmith is driven by the cash that you find in game.” Cash therefore serves a different purpose from rank XP: it funds weapon builds rather than directly describing the death-retention rule.
The 3D printer turns ingredients and recipes into gear
The printer consumes components found in the world. Recipes can unlock the ability to print specific gear or upgrade the printer. A recipe is a progression unlock; the ingredients are the resources needed to use the crafting system.

Other progression objectives
The FOB’s Boss Board tracks lieutenants killed during the season. Dog-tag cases populate the board, creating an in-match objective that other squads can contest. This is a seasonal tracking feature described before launch; it does not establish what resets at the end of a season.

In the original mode, extracted cash, weapons, and other items went into Storage between matches. If you died, you generally lost the items in your Backpack. The exception described in the official launch overview was weapon blueprints: a blueprint was temporarily inaccessible—usually for a few hours—rather than permanently lost. These are historical launch rules for the original DMZ, not specifications for Modern Warfare 4.

Season 03: Active Duty Operators and Secure Backpacks
Season 03 added three Active Duty Operator slots, letting players choose among operators with separate on-soldier gear. The update also described Secure Backpacks: eligible items that were not contraband or on-soldier gear stayed in inventory between runs and were preserved for that Active Duty Operator if eliminated. These were season-specific legacy mechanics.
Season 04: FOB upgrades, Wallet, and a documented reset
In Season 04, passive FOB upgrade objectives could unlock insured weapon slots, greater Wallet capacity, stash increases, personal exfil, barter recipes, Buy Station discounts, and access to urgent missions. The Wallet let players extract and store cash outside the exclusion zone for a later infiltration.
That update also reset faction mission progress and DMZ inventory: contraband returned to starting weapons, keys and mission inventory were emptied, and faction progress and earlier insured-slot unlocks were reset. Earned blueprint unlocks and prior mission or boss rewards other than contraband and keys remained. This describes the specific Season 04 reset documented in 2023; it is not a general rule for every later season or the new DMZ.

How to use this information before the new mode launches
- Identify the version. If you are playing the original Warzone 2.0 DMZ, use its historical Storage and Backpack rules; if you mean the new Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, treat the details above as prelaunch information.
- Separate XP from carried loot. The new mode’s rank XP retention on death is established, but that does not answer whether an individual carried item survives.
- Track the right resource. Rank XP opens progression unlocks, cash funds weapon builds, and found ingredients are used by the printer.
- Verify reset and loss rules in official launch notes. The prelaunch material does not settle the new mode’s full item-loss table or seasonal carryover.
