Start in Your Orders: open the affected order, check its status and tracking, then use the options shown for that item. The right fix depends on whether the package is still in transit, already shipped, marked undeliverable, or arrived damaged—and whether Amazon or a third-party seller shipped it. This guide covers Amazon.com orders in the United States.
What to do when an Amazon order is late
- Open Your Orders, select the order, and review the estimated delivery date and tracking updates.
- Check email and Amazon Message Center for carrier notices. If a carrier other than Amazon is delivering the package, check that carrier’s website, app, or email for the latest scan.
- If the estimated delivery date has passed, allow 48 hours for an unexpected delay. Amazon says most late parcels arrive within that period; this is Amazon’s guidance, not an independently measured delivery statistic. Weather, traffic, holiday demand, customs, and operational issues are among the possible causes.
- If the package still has not arrived after 48 hours, use the contact route that matches the order. For an Amazon-shipped order, contact Amazon Customer Service within 30 days of the estimated delivery date. For an order sold and shipped by a third-party seller, contact the seller from the order page.
For a missed guaranteed delivery date, open the order in Your Orders and choose Problem with an order → Shipping or delivery issues → Shipment is late. Amazon says eligible guaranteed deliveries may receive a refund of the shipping fee—not a refund of the full purchase price.

If tracking says delivered but you do not have the package
Check the delivery location and tracking details, including whether the package was left somewhere other than your usual drop-off spot. Then use the order’s available help options in Your Orders. If a carrier delivered it, check the carrier’s tracking page as well; it may have the latest delivery information. Amazon’s late-delivery guidance recommends allowing 48 hours past the estimated date before escalating, but a delivered scan is a different status, so follow the options shown for that order.
Can you cancel an Amazon order?
Check Your Orders for the affected order’s current controls, such as Cancel items or a cancellation-request option. The available action depends on the order’s status; Amazon’s buyer-facing guidance reviewed here does not establish one universal pre-shipment cancellation window.

If the order has already shipped
Amazon says an order that has already shipped cannot be canceled. Open the order page and use the available return or refund options if the item is delivered or otherwise eligible.
If the order is marked undeliverable
Amazon says an undeliverable package is returned, and an automatic refund is issued after Amazon receives it. That refund trigger applies to this specific status; it does not establish the timing or eligibility for every cancellation.

What to do if an Amazon item arrives damaged
- Keep the packaging and take clear photos that show the damage. Amazon may ask for photos, but they are not required in every case.
- In Your Orders, select Return or replace items beside the affected item.
- Select the item and a return reason, then follow the instructions and remedies offered for that order.
- Check the return-by date and replacement details. Amazon says the original item must be returned by the stated deadline to avoid being charged for the replacement. In some cases, the replacement ships only after Amazon receives the original.
A replacement is not guaranteed: availability depends on the item and stock, and the displayed delivery date can vary. If a replacement is unavailable—or the item was a gift—you may need to return it and place a new order. The exact return, refund, or replacement options depend on the product and order. Hazardous defective products have a separate online returns process, so follow the instructions shown for that item.
When a third-party seller is involved
For an order sold and shipped by a third-party seller, contact the seller through the order page and keep the messages and tracking details. Seller-fulfilled returns go to the seller. Amazon says sellers generally process a refund within two business days after receiving a return, though transit delays, untrackable shipping, receiving a different item, or receiving a new item that has been used or damaged can delay it.

When to consider an A-to-z Guarantee claim
Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee can cover eligible third-party-seller purchases for delivery and item-condition problems, but it is not an automatic refund for every dispute. For a non-delivery claim, Amazon’s stated conditions include that three days have passed after the latest estimated delivery date—or tracking shows delivery confirmation, whichever happens sooner—and that you contacted the seller more than 48 hours earlier without resolution. For a damaged, defective, or not-as-described item, Amazon says you must have requested a return more than 48 hours earlier without receiving seller authorization.
Other eligibility rules apply, including a stated 90-day window tied to the order’s last possible delivery date, and the Guarantee does not apply to every transaction type. Review Amazon’s A-to-z Guarantee terms and follow the claim options available for your specific order before submitting a request.
